In these "outtakes" we see a more authentic, and "twitchy", author as he is being harassed somewhat by the filmmakers.
This is _cinema verite_, film truth "24 times per second", a viewing of process prior to constructed product, as opposed to the to the more professional result of relatively greater editing in the traditional 'documentary'.
he hated being interviewed and these people seemed to want him to behave like Tommy Lee or some kind of rock star; it's obvious they were trying his patience with their coaching and comments about how he was responding in this way or that way!
for me, any chance to see the master in any form or forum is a blessing!
I grew intensely angry listening to these people in the background. It is a testament to what a gracious man he was that he didn't unleash that savage intellect on them.
Thank you so much for posting this. It's a lovely insight into a brilliant man in some relaxed, unguarded moments. The more I learn of this fellow, the higher I rate him. If I had known him I would have been devastated by his loss.
@distraughtsymphony I got this feeling about the guy you hear once or twice off camera, but if you watch the entire interview I think you'll get the sense that the woman conducting the interview is very sincere and is trying very hard to think of good questions to ask such a brilliant man.
I love when the cameraman says he "just shoots the pictures", and DFW goes, "Yeah."

One of the nicest most sincere men who lived on this earth. I hope he is getting a better deal where he is now ,than this shithole.

Oh, so he's really cute and sweet in addition to being brilliant? Cool. That's nice. Not breaking my heart or anything.

It's so funny to see one of the most brilliant authors of his generation make fart noises with his hands. He does it at 2:10

@CaptainPancakes It could be worse. James Joyce, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century wrote the fart letters, after all.
