He has some debts to pay off and that about covers it with a little extra left after taxes. He can get up to $225,000 if he gets it right, but if he gets it wrong, he's screwed out of that $75k and has more money to pay in interest since he'll be paying that debt off later.

It's not as black and white as you describe it.

Because he WOULD DEFINITELY have gotten the money if he backed down, his options are:

Choose to back down, 100% chance at $100,000.

Choose to answer, 50% chance $250,000, and 50% chance at $25,000.

sure technically, regardless of what he went through, the end result was $25,000.

so yes it's always best to go for the answer but the way he described it was a lil wonky.

Someting else: whilst I see how with the odds etc it suited him to go for it: maybe 100k is pretty good whilst 25 isn't so much: 250k is just a bonus. That last question,  I just would have taken the money: sure it's conservative but it's how these decisions effect my life, not just the "odds." If I'd taken the 100 and found I'd guessed correctly I'd still be happy. (100 is better than 25.) If you don't need the money you can go for it-maybe it's a personality thing too.

I didn't know the band question but he could have thought more about the first question (Peggy Sue): two of the answers had Sue as the second name, two didn't. I thought it was more likely the second word would have been changed as well as the first: he could have gone the fifty fifty on the first question, then a 2/3 chance the other answer would have had Sue as the surname.
