What a phoney, a little boy thinking he's Elvis, you can see it's all an act and he's faking it, trying to look sexy when in fact he's batting for the other side, flogging his button around Picadilly, I have always detested him since I first saw him and I always will.
I was 15 years old when I used to watch this every week. It catapulted Cliff into his long career! It was so much better than the Six Five Special which was on the other side BBC at the same time!
This ragged tape from British commercial television captures the export of American "popular culture" through music directed at adolescents; it shows the emerging social importance of the teen and, implicitly, the subordination of European popular music to new trans-Atlantic rhythms and tones.
The new Empire was making its values dominant in post-war Europe...
Cliff Richard was seventeen. At the time it seemed Marty Wilde was the star. I was there, I watched them all, save for the ones I missed when I was at boarding school and those have all been destroyed with time. There was nothing like it and there has not been ever since. Every one bemoaned the loss of Oh Boy.It was a terrific time.
It is incredible, considering Cliff Richards involvement with Mary Whitehouse in the Christian based Festival Of Light in the 1970's to realise that that performance of "Three Cool Cats" was the first thing that triggered her into her "clean up TV" campaign by inspiring her wrath.
I'd kill to get my hands on the original recording of this Percy Green song, along with its lyrics. I've never heard it before, but it's addictive. How the singer was able to perform this song without stumbling over his words is amazing.
5:36 ... they mention "September 12th" as the start of the new series (after the summer break) ... it actually returned on that date under another name "Boy Meets Girl" ... with the same producer, Jack Good.
I can't believe this footage still exists, it's wonderful. I remember watching on a 9" tv and don't forget these programmes were not pre-recorded they went out live. Thanks so much for posting it.
i used to hang outside the hackney empire at the stagedoor just to get autographs had them all even cliffs .dont know what happened to them i was only 10years old
Gwne Vincent Apperared on a show with Little Richard & Jerry Lee Lewis The Animals Taped At Granada TV in Manchester England. but I dont have The ttitle of show. Thanks for the memories.
Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochrane toured the U.K. in 1960 as part of a package tour.Whilst here they appeared on the T.V. show Boy meets Girls and radio show Saturday club. The recordings were available on a C.D. some years ago.During a break in the tour Eddie and Gene were travelling back after a show at the Bristol Hippodrome they were in a Ford Consul hire car, and were going to London Airport to catch a plane back to the States. The car crashed and Eddie was killed.Hope this info helps.
Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran never appeared on OH BOY show. And they couldn't do it in 1960, because this last episode of the show was aired on May 30th 1959.
No - I never said that they did but it was implied that Gene never took part in a TV production in the UK, which he did along with Eddie - I believe it was called "Boy Meeets Girl" but I am not quite sure.
@lmj22 Youre right Gene and Eddie both appeared on the Boys meets Girls show hosted by Marty Wilde. Only seems like yesterday and im now 66!!! Great days fancy hearing all this for the first time in the UK.
In as much as the hosts announce that the show would return in September 1959,did it?
It is odd that Jack Good would later only do two seasons of "Shindig" which to me is simply Oh Boy",version 2.0. Both series still look fresh all these years later although with the visual limitations of 405 line transmission one can better understand the sparse look and lighting
of "Oh Boy".
Nonetheless, both series remain today groundbreaking in both their pacing and visuals.
