Mark Clark made one of the worst decisions of the war by a Western Allies general when he ignored orders to cut off the retreating Germans after Monte Cassino so he could get the glory of entering Rome. He also failed to pursue the remainder of their forces, so all were able to reorganize and form the even stronger Gothic Line soon after, and the battle for Italy took another year.
They made a mistake bombing the beautiful monastery. If I were the commander, I'd use a combine force of American and British Airborne... also, I'm Catholic, so its an insult to me... But don't mind the last reason if you're annoyed by Christian comments...
This TV program is ok but somewhat bias they never say what happens to the refugees and monks inside the monastery just like they never mention the rape of Japanese women on Okinawa the only crimes they do mention are the rape of German women by Soviets but Americans never commit war crimes they're Geezus
What the heck are you smoking? No one's saying they don't commit atrocities. The hard truth is that the Axis Powers committed 10x atrocities especially rapes in my native country, for example by the Japs.
The French Expeditionary Forces, from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, and commanded by French nationals, fought for their national honor. They did what both the Germans and Allies thought was impossible: Working their way through the trackless wilderness of the Arunchi Mountains they cut off German supply routes and broke the Gustav Line (this is an untold story).
From your comments you would have marched right up thier with a smile. At least if that is if you trully believed the shit you are spewing out of those mouths of yours. We did our best. But Germany Italy and japan would not have given us the same respect. No way arount it. You where not thier- you don't know!!!!
The allies had la resistance paint rail cars roofs white holding the countrys art. And even used dive bombers instead of bombers at the cost of allied soldiers lives to save art. They did thier best but if you where in those trenches you would mutiny if your superior said no- can't bomb it because it's too pretty. So march up thier and take those 88's out. Don't hit the building though. How would you feel.
Bombing accuracy in the day was 50%. how could they level a plain 100ft away without hitting the church? I would die to preserve the right to produce art. But not for a piece of art itself. Would you?
Thats some bull. you dont need bomb a monastry to remove artilerry spotters. Two guys with binoculars and radio can do spotting from the monastry in ruins or in perfect shape. Allied intelligence screwed up and this is kinda stupid excuse for that.
End of European civilization : when the "allies" decided to bomb the monastery. They lost their own identity and the nazi won. We still live under this nazi victory. The irony being that the troops who climbed the hill were Polish christians... Poles collaborated to the end of christian Europe.
So instead of using our overwhelming air-sea mobility to outflank and surround them. we decide to fight the war on foot as to make it easy for the Germans to stop us.
and then you surrounded them too and thats why churchill told " I wanted a junger tiger and no stranded whale. You used your overwhelming air forces to destroy the closter and so the bravery, heroically outnumbered german could use the ruins for a better defence wtih great success ;-)
@jakefree25 there is one little mistake in your way of thinking... your so called air-sea mobility couldn't be used in italy at this time, cause all possible vessels and planes were stationed in the uk in preperations for overlord (6.6.44)
That was the excuse. But they should have done that in 43 or early 44. Actually, they held back a lot of ships for the South France landings, not critical. For a fraction of lives, if we had used our air-sea resources, we could have had all Italy by 44. That would have put the whole economic & military assets of Italy on our side as well as provided bomber bases in the Po Valley, very close to Southern Germany & Austria. Also, it would've strengthened the Swiss's hand in dealing with the Germans
@Acid4Blood Yes, they were good - no doubt at all about that. It's worth mentioning that the units opposing them were some of the better ones too - they broke over a battalion of German Paras in a failed effort to beat the Essex Regt at Castle Hill - one of the more seasoned all-volunteer units in the British Army
The Gustav line displays the the outstanding defensive skills of Albert Kesselring and the very poor leadership of Mark Clark. General Clark is one of the worst commanders in US history. It took him over two years to win control of Italy. He launched stupid assault after stupid assault.
Then when Clark had a chance to cut off the whole southern German army in 6/44, he turned the other way so he could take Rome and let those German troops escape to the North. I think he was secretly working for the Nazis. He was mediocrity incarnate and rose to the top.
lol what you writting is a great joke^^. he works for the nazis this is one of the best propaganda I ever heard. He was unable like so many of your generals.
US propaganda , really you are such a poor bastards. There was no german in Monte Casino .
