I'm sure I can hear this song coming from above...guess he made it ok and is still performing to packed audiences above...you are missed down her John...RIP and God Bless
@luckylangerie .. I think it was excessive drinking..I love his music.. although to me he was the Oliver Reed of the music industry. But then that's the price that genius's pay for their talent.
OMG someone finally posted a video of this gig! I was in the 3rd row! this brings back happy memories for me, but at the same time I realise he is not here any more and his passing makes me very sad- It seems i finally made one of his concerts just in time. R.I.P John . A legend never forgotten.
is it a musicians fate to end it like this what as brilliant man what a talent. watch this song when he was in his prime , not destroyed by alcohol and drugs,
. he is amazing. i have cried tears over this remarable life story. rip john u are the best. biggs
Oh fuck - John Martyn is dead? Damn. Hadn;t thought of him in a while, and then went to look up his songs here - well, may God, if there is a god, bless his soul, if he had a soul -
I saw him in DC about 1982, a nice show - his last number was such a pretty little ditty that half the audience was whistling along - well, good-by to you, John Martyn, best of fortune in the afterlife...
So sorry, I'd raise Martyn from the dead if I could \:^/ -- the experience surely would give him a lot of new song-writing material :^)
yeah, the good seem to die young, Rory Gallagher vanished while I wasn't looking too -- maybe "popular musician" is a high-risk occupation. Well, turn other people on to his music, his spirit at least will live on
I first heard him play this evening, my dad sat and told me about the good old days. Ive gone through 3 of his albums so far and cant seem to stop. Despite only being 16 i can relate to this song, as can most.
Sweetwaters NZ early 80s he mesmerised us with his absolutely superb performance....he was at his peak & that was the one and only time our paths crossed. he inspired me hugely . He was a king ,God bless his soul. the bass player he was working with was a prodigy...anyone happen to know his name?
I nearly went to Sweetwaters that year but wasn't too inspired by the line up. Problem is I had no idea who John Martyn was, and to be honest I only have just disacovered him now, this very day...25 years on. If only there was Youtube back then I would have been there.
when I returned home after work and read the sad news, I started crying for a musician the very first time in my life. he had it all: soul, lyrics, emotion. As I missed his only concert in Austria, I hope I will meet him playing his gorgeous music somewhere over the rainbow. the hurt in our hearts will never go away, John, RIP
I cannot stop the tears and can't quite wrap my brain around John's death. Like many others here and on other sites, John was the soundtrack to life and the pain of life for 30 years for me. He is my favorite singer and songwriter of all time. No one articulated the difficulties and exquisite beauty of mortality like John. Like patterns in the rain...
The first musician I ever cried at when he died. His music covered all the moods and his passion was enviable. I saw him in Edinburgh, Milton Keynes and all over Glasgow. He was amazing and will always remain deep in my heart. From One World, John Wayne and Acid Rain to name a few, he was amazing. Tried to convert my wife to him but you can't win everything. The concert I took her to he was out of it, so not the best introduction.
Wish I'd caught his last one, but that's the way life goes......
@DEFuning i am grieving for the fact that i have only just been introduced to this genius. I so wish i'd been and seen him while he was alive. What an amazing genius, i've never seen/heard anything like him....wow, thank god i've discovered him now! John Wayne was first track i heard wow wow wow so comanding yet soft....totally with ya hon :) i've fallen in love with him as soon as i heard him. So heart felt hey, his music will stay forever, a happy life to you xx

Early 1980's: If it was a full band, it would most likely be Alan Thomson (Alan Thomson on this video)
If it was a duo with Bass then its probably Danny Thompson
As prodigy refers to someone young, my money is on Alan Thomson, a fantastic player. very underrated.
