Joan Osborne is one genius singer. Her version of ''What becomes of the brokenhearted'' is as beautiful and soulful as Jimmy Ruffins-and I've been a life-long Motown fan!! This version of ''Heatwave"" is fantastic.

Look at Joan Osborne while she sings this song. She is so radiant and it's obvious she has absolute love and respect for the song and musicians. Close your eyes and listen to her sing this song and you realize there is the most soulful woman singing the song and she no longer has a color or race in that moment. She's just singing her ass off. That's the true essence of soul. The 'Funk Brothers'?????. Absolutely amazing.
@cs868 If you watch the documentary-movie you get a sense Joan was very humble and appreciative of being asked to be a part of this and in no way makes this about her. You are right, she pours her soul into her two numbers from this movie as tribute to the Motown artists imo, to honor them for what they brought us.
@Imissthe70s I'm with you on your comments. That is, in essence, what I was saying in my post. I have the 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' dvd and it's by far my favorite music / documentary disc. I have watched it so many times I've lost count. Everyone in the dvd seemed to be really inspired and into it and it translated well on camera. They all looked like they were having a blast. I love the music, the anecdotes and stories. Thanks for the reply.
I always say you have to respect the first performer because everyone afterward has something to work from. Non singers don't consider what it takes to sing a song that has never been sung before. That said, I really like how Joan Osborne sounds doing this kind of song. She would have done fine in that era,
Any Lover of the MoTown sound, from the Temptations to Marvin, the Supremes to Smokey, and who do not know the Funk Brothers... owe it to themselves to find Standing in the Shadows of Motown. (this vid is a little cut from it)
You will have the biggest OMG moment as you FINALLY understand why if you loved any MoTown, you loved it all.
sound quality wise this is better, modern up to date sound engeering from equipment to instruments...the vocals are easily as good as marthas. can't call ME racist..i qualify for reparations
I was never a real fan of Joan Osborne till I saw Standing in the Shadows of Motown, had my eyes opened didn't I, what a voice, carry on Joan, black, white or whatever does it really matter.
Musicians from back in the day are leaving us at an unfortunately accelerating rate. Since this film came out, three of the Funk Brothers in it have died. Both drummers, Pistol Allen & Uriel Jones, and the older piano player, Joe Hunter.
Funk Brothers Played on more number hits in history. The sounds they created make you drive a little faster and the groove goes deep down and for that moment things are not that bad,the Motown sound will never be forgotten. My kids are growing up on the Motown souind. AL O Brooklyn
@HigherEnlightment The same goes for All those great guys, and the back-up singers, Man! The music came from deep within these people, and it is no wonder it had such an effect on us.

What do you mean, the Funk Bros. aren't the backing band? Watch the video and you will see Bob Babbit, Joe Messina, Pistol Allen, Jack Ashford, Eddie Willis, Joe Hunter and others.
I was with Jack Ashford a few weeks ago for an interview spent about 40 mins with him .He is one of the funnyest and most intrseting person i have ever spoke to.and his favorite sayin is "Wanna hear a story"
BUY THE DVD AND CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Joan as usual nails the tune. What a singer, and good moves on stage also. The funk brothers are terrific on ALL of the tunes on the soundtrack.
I recognize that I only knew her hit, but when I watched the "Shadows" DVD I saw this and was happy to have to change my mind about her. What a set of pipes she has!!! Wonderful singer, buy this DVD, it is a labor of love for recognizing all of these cats.
I have watched this movie 3 times, this has rocked my very soul, the Funk Brothers, Jamerson is legendary, and I am playing bass in his shadow, hoping he stays very close, but Joan woo, she has nailed this, and I mean NAILED it! And yeah I think it's apples and oranges to her and Martha, but I like this better.

Hey, im 16 and been brought up on motown and now have a girlfriend that is into Northern Soul... if you join a scooter club.. they always do Northern soul nights and weekends away... its mostly motown and northern soul played until early hours of the morning.. a great experence and chance to meet people also into this music. When I grow up I just want to be one of the background singers..........:-)
I LOVE THIS VIDEO AND ALL THE OTHER FUNK BROTHERS W/JOAN. WOW! I'm from MI and I remember & LOVE the MOTOWN sound. (I miss it and the oh, so uncomplicated sounds and times!) THIS IS GREAT! THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!!!!! Nothing better than JOAN & The Funk Brothers. FABULOUS.
include "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave" by Martha & the Vandellas, "The Way You Do the Things You Do" by The Temptations, and "Reach Out I'll Be There" by the Four Tops.
Allen's influences included Max Roach, Buddy Rich, and fellow Funk Brother Benny Benjamin. He played a studio set comprised of Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers and Gretsch components.
Allen died on June 30, 2002 in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 69, almost six months before Standing in the Shadows of Motown came out.
Richard "Pistol" Allen (12 August 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee 30 June 2002 in Detroit, Michigan) was an African-American musician. Allen was the primary recording session drummer for Motown Records' in-house Funk Brothers band on most of Holland-Dozier and Holland's hit productions of the 1960s. Hits for which Allen played the drums
The Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon. Are you ready? You can be! For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Behold the Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon! Call upon the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be ready!
To everyone who hasn´t seen this DVD, go out and see it, it is really a labor of love and a historic document. The only part I don´t like about it is the fact that they used Bootsy Collins for a couple of tunes, and IMHO his take on both of them is a joke. As much as I love Bootsy and his music, I think that his performances on this DVD are the only weak point on it. The rest is an absolute must have for any music lover.
Not a fan of JOan Osbourne...but she sings this Martha Reeves and the Vandellas classic ever so soulfully! Drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen passed away shortly after this film was released. Pistol had the beat! Hope other percussionists will becone inspired by him!
Hi dcmto2003...that was a clip of the DVD "Standing In the Shadows of Motown. Go out and get it if you don't have it yet. I'm working with The Funk Brothers now and loving every minute of it...they have other projects available...check them out! Did several shows with Joan...she is great!
So are all those old geezers the ones in black and white at the beginning? Joan sure is one fine lookin woman, just love great lookers who can sing too.
the funk bros. are the greatest, nobody can make you move your feet or other parts like they can. they also loved each other. they only cared about each other and the music!
Joan Osborne is such a gifted singer. There's something about her that just captivates her audience. She's a natural for the Motown Sound. I just love this girl.
i love the ghost note rhythms played by the Motown drummers. it just adds such a validity to their music and their way of playing. simply awe-inspiring.
i remember wen i first got this dvd....it was a present on my 18th birthday and i remember how happy my mum was wen she came home and saw me watching it...and not listening to ,y usual 50cent....since then i havnt looked back and i have come to appreciate some truly amazing artists out there!!!! i still like the commercial music of today but now my eyes are open to new things....
I'm young (17) but I grew up listening to Motown music...and unfortunately I'm among those who never knew about the Funk Brothers until recently when I saw the documentary. I feel so bad they never received sufficient credit but it's made me appreciate the music tenfold :)
There music will be around for years years and years to come not like the stuff thats on TV and and the radio but don't get me wrong the radio is great!

include "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave" by Martha & the Vandellas, "The Way You Do the Things You Do" by The Temptations, and "Reach Out I'll Be There" by the Four Tops.

The Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon. Are you ready? You can be! For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

It's a great demonstration of her versatility...and she clearly likes that kind of music. Good performance.

Lalbruiz is right. If you're a Motown fan go get this DVD. Some great music and memories in it.

Just got her "Breakfast in Bed" album. It's one of the best albums I've purchased in a long long time...

Not a fan of JOan Osbourne...but she sings this Martha Reeves and the Vandellas classic ever so soulfully! Drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen passed away shortly after this film was released. Pistol had the beat! Hope other percussionists will becone inspired by him!

The beginning is not 'crap'. It's a dedication to the real musicians of Motown music.

If Ms. Osbourne isn't on the next 'Divas' concert along with the usual suspects, there ain't no justice in this world.

the funk bros. are the greatest, nobody can make you move your feet or other parts like they can. they also loved each other. they only cared about each other and the music!

Joan Osborne is such a gifted singer. There's something about her that just captivates her audience. She's a natural for the Motown Sound. I just love this girl.

I remember this from High School. Every clip I've seen Joan in faithfully captures the sound and spirit of the Motown songs. She just nails it.

I'm young (17) but I grew up listening to Motown music...and unfortunately I'm among those who never knew about the Funk Brothers until recently when I saw the documentary. I feel so bad they never received sufficient credit but it's made me appreciate the music tenfold :)
