This movie damaged me when I was a kid .. had night terrors about Medusa until I was at least 7 or 8. Disney is fucked up, trauma induced mind control always with the same story about children being separated from their parents. Fuck this shit.
How can anybody not like this song? How? I'm thirty-six years old and I'm sitting here with a face dripping with tears because of this song. The books the movie they're such an integral part of my childhood and a bonding experience between my mother and me. I just can't see how anyone can not like this song.
@Chibihalo2 Me and my mom used to watch this movie together all the time when I was little. She just passed away from cancer about a month ago, and I can't watch this movie without tears streaming down my face. I will always cherish the memories.
I hate the fact that the intro tries to set a dark, depressing and sad tone for a movie that doesn't have a deep dark theme. I will soon do a review of this film when I get the support I need
@JacobSegaNerd really? no deep dark theme? a girl who may have never known her parents is adopted into what she hoped was a loving family only to be taken out into the darkest part of the swamp, threatened everyday by alligators, thrown into a life or death struggle by a "woman" although i doubt shes human everyday, to retrieve a ruby. she does this all while being told shes worthless and no one will ever love her.
@JacobSegaNerd its dark for a disney movie. sure it has some action and humor but they only stand as a counterpoint to the depressing life penny is forced to live. you can't make a childrens film that is nothing but bleak any more then you could make an adult film that's nothing but innocent frolicking. i admit the movie doesn't balance them very well but its not bad in the least.
This song is so haunting 2 me. This part was prob. my 2nd least fav. part bcuz the drawings and the animation used 2 scare me, but now it's 1 of my fav. parts bcuz ppl can now enjoy true beauty of Disney's artwork.
As a young child, probably Penny's age I had a storybook tape which told the story of the Rescuers. It also played this song. Every night from about age 4 to age 9/10 I fell asleep with the story/song. So although it is sad, to me it just makes me sleepy.
from the nostalgia at 28, to the being scared part at 2:01, we have all shared the same childhood and have experienced the same thoughts throughout the experience of growing and falling in love with this movie. This very connection has brought us all here to watch these specific scenes and hear these specific songs today. A trip back to the beginning of memory lane for me... the very very beginning. <3
This is truly one of the best disney movies by way of sad music, I dare anyone to listen to this song, "tomorrow is another day" and "someones waiting for you" without crying. If you can, you have a heart of stone!
@mastergx1 "someone's waiting for you" made me cry when i was little. i had the sing along songs tape with that song on it and i cried everytime i heard it.
@KayneArcheron True that cause Don Bluth was the man in animation, being a director, or producer also a lot of my favorite movies were animated or directed, or produced by him and i still have them to this day on vhs, lol, Anastasia was one of my favorite's and so was Sleeping Beauty, All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Secret of NIMH, and The Land Before Time. ^_^
Disney had so many great assets back in the day... the guy who did all the pastel backgrounds for this intro also did the castle designs for Beauty and the Beast, and Walt Disney even met with Salvador Dali to make a short film called "Destino"... Disney was something beautiful back in the day but has been corrupted by commercialized junk like Hannah Montanna and High School Musical.
@KayneArcheron Thumbs up on that man, granted I do love the disney's pixar movies and bringing back actual drawn animation through the princess and the frog very nice, but i miss the disney movies of old also disney channel shows are very sad these days disney shows back in the day where the best, shows like gargoyles, recess, pepper ana and etc., same can also be said for cartoons on nick and cartoon network except for a choice few and also cartoon network was officially lost when toonami left
I am a guy (not gay) who listens to metal/rock, but i find this song achingly beautiful and sad.... I feel kinda lonely listening to this, but at the same time i feel this strong feeling of epicness! Amazing! :)
The sequel to this movie pretty much told the same story with new characters and different settings, but had none of the depth of the original, in neither story, style or characters and was altogether forgettable. The original "The Rescuers" still sends chills down my spine in numerous ocassions. The opening "The Journey" is one of those moments. This song is hauntingly beautiful.
My personal favorite Disney movie, never fails to make me cry. Especially this music.
To this very day, mice and rats are still my favorite animals, and I have always known I would adopt an older child from foster care. Just like Penny, because all kids need someone to love them. Can you believe that there are kids out there with no-one?
When i was younger and i used to hate this song because it was so slow. When opening came on i used to think "wtf, why is this song so long, when is the movie gonna start?!"
I'm 22 and I've been watching this movie since I was 7. My brother says it's depressing lol, but I think it's a deep and moving story. This song and "Tomorrow Is Another Day" makes me cry. The Rescuers, 101 Dalmatians, and Robin Hood are my favorite Disney movies, the oldies are the best :)
i'm being honest, don't down me please. this song ALWAYS scared me. my sis used to tell me creppy things when it played. now, i listen to it whenever i can, when i'm sad, it makes me happy, and sometimes puts me to sleep. i love this movie ^^
This is the best opening credit sequence of all the Disney movies that I can remember. The artwork and music are all just wonderful. Many thanks to the talented folks who worked on this project.
@Askepott60 I think it doesn't sing about jorney, but if you listen to the instrumental music you can "hear" the journey of the bottle trought storms and all..
these pictures...i can see bob ross sitting in front of them and saying something like "and a little bit of titanium white...right...here. aaaallright" :P
I'll be honest, I love this song. As a kid, my mom would put a storybook version on my stereo every night at bedtime. I would fall asleep to this playing.
this song and all other from the rescuers where GREAT songs. and the movie's where wonderful i remember watching them when i was 5-6 and knowing that the where old even then i am 23 now and still remember nearly every part of both 1 and 2.
Oh man, I recently remembered watching this movie and spent around an hour looking for this video. It's harder when you can't remember the name of the movie. Congrats on posting this songs; it's a great one.
This song had slipped out of my Disney conciousness but now that it's back in it it's one of my favourite Disney songs. :D So beautiful and moving and sad and dramtic.
Gawd, I watched this movie for the first time in about 8 years, and it's just as good as when I first saw it, and this song may just be the most beautiful disney song I've ever heard. Forget "Feed the Birds", forget "God Help the Outcasts", this is the best disney song ever.
Whatever happened to the woman who sang this? I can't find her stuff anywhere.
And it's funny--most of the time when I do find some Disney song that isn't too high, the video isn't a clip from the film, but one of those "music videos" people like to make. Go fig.
Some songs--or even some parts of songs--are more affected by the higher pitch than others. Sometimes it doesn't alter the sound much, but with certain notes and in certain keys, fugetabbowdit. It turns it into something completely different. (I wish I knew more about music so I could NAME the keys I mean.)
Gawd, this bugs the hell out of me. Do you have perfect pitch? I do, so I understand exactly how and why it doesn't work in the given key. I feel your pain...and yeah, it's weird, it's always the clips directly from the film that are affected; never the AMVs or "music videos". Just weird.
I had the Disney stories on cassette tape when I was in preschool/elementary school and every night when I was put to bed my mom played the rescuers version. This was one of the last things I head as I was falling asleep.

I watched this again last night after so many years and I cried my eyes out. This movie is tragically beautiful from the very beginning with and I think it's hugely thanks to the music.
...Arguably, the best dramatic opening theme from a Disney animated film of all time!!! This opening theme sung by Shelby Flint will leave you speechless and with tears in your eyes from start to finish!!! Truly a show stopping film dealing with child abuse and neglect!!! Disney needs to be highly commended for releasing this classic animated masterpiece!!! It's such a pity that Disney has not released animated projects with a more powerful and serious tone such as this one!!!
Just by seeing this I can see we have two completely different Rescuers films out there. This opening credits is a complete contrast to that of it's successor. This one expresses what Disney was at the time, beutiful & tries to get you into it from the start. With the still images & thme song it's clear that you are about to view an emotional tale of suspence, romance, & inner-child release. The opening sequence for The Rescuers gets 5 stars, no words no corniness; just pure stillness.
Im a tough mofo, and i usually roll my eyes when people say "THIS BROUGH TEARS TO MY EYES" but damnit this song is makin' me ball my eyes out!

I think it's so fantastic that the song takes the point of view of the bottle, as if the bottle itself is a metaphor for Penny.

Disney needs to be highly commended for releasing this classic animated masterpiece!!! It's such a pity that Disney has not released animated projects with a more powerful and serious tone such as this one!!!

Just the opening sequence is enough to get you hooked on this film. It's so mesmerizing, tense, and beautiful.

That song reminds of me of Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid. Very emotional, and and beautiful at the same time :)

Beautiful song. Reminds me of when I was a little girl. We had the book along with the record. LOL! Yup, I'm old!
