  • This guy is amazing. I saw him at the NAMM show yesterday and he was just mesmerizing. He's got so much character, style and articulation in his playing, and he takes things way outside the box of what you'd expect. In that respect, he reminds me a little of Jeff Beck. If you get a chance to hear him - GO!

  • sick playing, all you haters wish you have 1/100 the chops this dude has.

  • I got it!... He looks like that kid from "A Christmas Story"" all grown up...

  • yea... I got no use for this guy

  • he's got everything except that special something, that raw passion, the mojo, it's lacking

  • good picker, I'm just not a fan

  • Now THAT'S some playing!

  • I meant what I said. or better said, "I say what I mean and I mean what I say," but go ahead and have your own opionion.

  • This guy makes a big joke of something many of us take too serious; yet neither end of that spectrum is right. Even so, I don't like THIS MOCKERY of our art. It's too bad JACKASS doesn't take up the drums and hide in the back where no one can see him. Let him pound out the frustration he has for NOT MAKING IT on the skins. I'm not impressed. ps. that's the way I see it

  • @Robb9096 lol read his bio before you say something so ignorant like "he hasnt made it." Making good money for more than 30+yrs some would consider that making it. There is something for everyone. He has serious stuff, and has serious credentials. Because he doesnt hide behind his guitar, and uses his entertaining personality as part of an act occasionally means he is making the art more accessible to people who whouldnt normally give it the time of day. Other serious players disagree with u

  • @Robb9096 he's not playing Tarrega, Villa Lobos, Bach, or the like.... it's rock'n'roll. it's supposed to be fun, if you don't get it, the jokes on you.

  • @Robb9096 this guys an accomplished guitarist teacher and likes to have fun with his performance. Lighten up a little bit and enjoy, you are quite foolish in your words.

  • @JRaab311 the wise man knows: this is a jackass! don't talk to me

  • @Robb9096 your an idiot that will underachieve his entire life, good luck but go away and stop poisoning this video.

  • @JRaab311 I'LL HAVE THE LAST WORD ON THIS, SONNY BOY! YOU NEED A SLAP, I'LL DO IT. NOW LISTEN TO THIS, JACKASS! I'M ENTITLED TO MY OPINION, JUST LIKE YOU, EVEN IF YOURS IS STUPID! DOES MENTAL RETARDATION IN YOUR FAMILY STEM FROM MOTHER'S SIDE OR FATHER'S? OH, YOUR MOTHER IS YOUR FATHER'S SISTER! GOT IT! NOW GO AWAY, I HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO. AND BY THE WAY; THIS FELLOW IS, IN MY OPINION A JACKASS! AND ROCK NEEDS TO BE ENJOYABLE BUT NOT IDIOTIC! WANT MORE??? U ARE AN OVERACHIEVER??? HUH???

  • @Robb9096 haha people like you should not be on the internet, there should be a screening process for ignorant fucks who want to rant about nothing. you will not have the last word you dumb twat, do us all a favor and jump off a cliff.

  • @JRaab311 YOU DON'T LISTEN, BECAUSE YOU ARE THICK-HEADED! YOU KEEP HARASSING ME, ASSHOLE! I'M MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS AND YOU CONTACT ME! IDIOT! DON'T YOU SEE THAT? ARE YOU SO LAME OF MIND? NOW HERE IS IT, AND I'VE SAID THIS ALREADY, I WILL HAVE THE LAST WORD. HEY, DID YOU GET RID OF THAT JACKASS TEACHER YET? WHAT AN EMBARASSMENT TO THE MUSIC WORLD ... YOU TOO!!! WANT SOME MORE???

  • i going to get see him for free at a clinic and several weeks

  • What a Monster player he is! I hope he's a millionaire,if not he should be.

  • DANG, I wish I could do that!

  • Hi I wish you success

  • I hear some DK trax in this XD.

  • imagine what if he used the pinkie finger!!!

  • @gluce271 I agree. He's really fantastic (his right hand technique is off the hook) but he's only using 75% of his left hand potential.

  • @KevyNova

I feel compelled to reply: Greg does use his pinkie (he taught me how to play guitar years ago). If you watch closely, he does use it on occasion. The thing is, the dude is big: over 6'6" and his hands are enormous. He really doesn't need to use it much: it just gets in the way.

  • Lady Madonna! man this guy is awesome

  • Chicken Picken on fire !

  • Joyous.

  • Harmonic porcupine!

  • A true master of the Telecaster

  • @Bluesbarri He's coaxing harmonics by playing pulloffs with his left hand and lightly resting his picking hand on the same string (as you would playing "normal" harmonics--not actually fretting the string, just touching it). Works best with the bridge pickup and some distortion.

  • How the hell is he doing that at 3:12 onwards

scraping the pic on a strong and changing fret?

  • Whats the name of the song that Koch plays at the beginning?

  • Comment removed

  • @luis22880 It should be Chinatown

  • Wonder what amp Mr Koch was using for this show?

  • Somewhere in heaven Danny Gatton is smiling.

  • omg...second tune sounds like dr. mario!!

  • Got to meet Greg on a couple occasions as see him play live../ as well as being a giant of a man, he is genuinely funny and entertaining. And yeah, he makes you want to go home and burn your guitars.

  • I love Graig, such a fun and special guitar player

  • I'm inspired from the movie Great Balls of Fire when I say "Follow that Killer!"

  • Comment removed

  • Was that Malford Milligan on vocals?

  • yup!! hes good!

  • This guy. This guy is the guy.

  • Greg's cock ripping solo...hope he's ok

  • another freak of nature FU!!!

  • this guys sick, chicken rippin

  • 1 17, Greg does a sick sweep! And those false harmonics at 3 15 and that hilarious face. Greg rules!

  • Had the pleasure of seeing Greg at the fender road show, bondi 2010. He is an awesome guitarist and a true showman in every sense. Just an amazing, fun to watch freak!

  • I feel like I know nothing about guitar or music in general.

  • Wow!

  • LOL -- that was great!

  • Koch has mad skills.

  • never could get into this guy...doesn't impress me

  • My favourite guitarist is shit compared with yours!!

  • My favourite guitarist is shit compared with yours!

  • He is incredible, I can't WAIT to go see him tomorrow night!

  • I got my Guitar Signed by this Guy too bad i didn't get it on my Fender but I got it on my super rare 81 Aria Custom U-100 Series black and green trans.flame guitar beat to death. I also won his Video Gristle like way way before it ever came out.

  • He is having fun while playng. Absolutely good stuff!

  • All the good stuff starts at 4:15... Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin ...

    And it's cut off :(

  • he plays so damn good.

  • yeah buddy. thats some sick ass chicken pickin'!!!

  • This is where ADD is a good thing....oooooooyyyyyaaaaaahhhhhh

  • This is where ADD is a good thing....oooooooyyyyyaaaaaahhhhhh

  • pshhh

    he`s good

  • He is for sure scaping the strings at 312. Killer Stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Please, name of first song :D

  • I've seen local bluegrass acts play equally well in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen. Still, this guy is good without a doubt!

  • amazing performance

  • i remember the first time i heard krantz

now i will be remembering this guy-

what a headcutter & his humor comes out in his playing

  • FANTASTIC!!!!

  • Its a harmonic note, if you fret a note and then strike it with the pick and touch the string 12 frets away it will produce a natural harmonic.

  • Love everything 'bout this cat! Great, great player who takes it light & lets the audience in...Awesome

  • dudes ON FIRE !

  • He is so good, it's ridiculous, lol.

    Absolutely smoking guitar---thanks for posting!!

  • 2 dislike...... Who? Why?

  • @topy12 My guess is they missed the like button....

  • he's good but stand him side by side with steve vai while playin and greg looks amateur

  • @stegabba19 You can't really compare the two. Both are great, end of story.

  • I wonder about this man's sanity more times than not. But then I realize he's really good and don't care as much anymore

  • Greg Koch FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what songs he playing at 55 seconds? I know it from somewhere but I have no clue what it is.

  • @famouspogs

HOLY SHIT I REALZIED ITS THE THEME FROM DR MARIO FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  • @famouspogs "Lady Madonna"--> Lennon & McCartney

  • Lady Madonna --> The Beatles

  • Unbelievable incredible guitarist! Greg Koch rules!

  • Tearing it up Gristleman!

  • If you noticed, he turned on one of his pedals- it's a distortion pedal and to do that, you need a whole lot of gain. He hammers on with his left hand and his right thumb hits the points where the harmonics will come out. It works the same way as picking with the right hand and hitting the harmonic with the left hand.

  • Great job Greg!

  • "Unadulterated GRISTLE!!!" Love it Frinkstobat.

  • This guy looks massive compared to the guitar!

  • @ashatan69 He's like 8 feet tall! He did a clinic at the music store I work at and he could easily hit his head on door frames! He is an awesome guy! Really cool!

  • I love greg koch's talent but I wish he would just quit the antics on a youtube video just once and play a song straight up and serious with out all the different styles and snippets of other popular songs. and if you play a popular song, play the whole song. It just get old after awhile, all the facial remarks and all that. just write some original stuff and play that stuff or play covers, but take them seriously.

  • hes just having fun. wot music should be

  • Still has Tom Good on bass, but was that his usual drummer - John Calarco? Hmm...

  • Johnny C hasn't been with Greg for a few years. After him, there was Tom Brechlein and Brannen Temple. And now for the last couple of years it's Del Bennett on drums.

  • Believe it, or not, I had not heard of Greg Koch before a couple weeks back-he is a really great player-glad I 'discovered him'

    Top shelf stuff!

  • There are so many great players (Koch included). Sometimes though, you don't hear aboutf them. Rest assured they're out ther raising the bar. To say one guy is better, when they've reached a certain level, is ignorant. It's like mixed martial arts, they have created hybrid styles that crossover. Take Brent Mason. Country, yes, but have you heard him play Jazz? He is a killer.

So quit the stupid co.mparisons. Leave that to 13 year olds, they have a right to idol worship

  • Great stuff mate.

  • now I see why he usually wears a hat... but damn he can play the shit outta that tele!

  • On what kind of amp id he play here?

  • Met this guy at a guitar clinic a few years ago showcasing the VG strat. He's nuts, but he's a genius.

  • I remember this show, It was the "Portland waterfront blues festival" was about 10ft from the stage, it was loud! and the best show all weekend long..the stage power went out for about a minute & a half and they just keep playing like true professionals..great, great show

  • He looks like Bill Frisell's mischievious kid brother...

  • This was great, but I think that his performance on the workshop stage was more fun.

  • Gristle! He is the shit.

  • 1:18

DID HE JUST SWEEP WITH HIS FINGERS?!!

    Greg Koch is the shit!!!

  • @MCLOVIN50 no he used a pick. it was still cool though

  • @MCLOVIN50 he usesd the pick

  • Proof - if it were needed - that a good Telecaster is all you'll ever need.

    Greg Koch is the m-a-n...

  • its like what they say: if you can't play it on a telecaster, you probably can't play it.

  • This is just way to much fun. I have to see this guy live.

  • BUCKET HED IS ASHAMED TO SHOW HIS FACE ...WHY...?GREG POOPS IN HIS GENERAL direction!!...lol

  • lady madonna, a beatles song

  • @713h832town281:

Why are there always faggots like you who say "My favourite guitarist is way better than yours, you faggots."

Please fuck off to your guitarist, or stay here and pay respect to good music. There isn't even a 'better' in music. Only an 'I like better'.

Just enjoy the music, or go to music you do enjoy.

  • @Arcenicum ...my fav guitarist is better lol :P

  • @Arcenicum Oh there's no better in music? So modern pop rock , hip hop and the piece of vomit called new age is the same as Jazz and this? A 5 years in the job guitar player is the same as a 45 years veteran session man? Give me a fucking break. People just pretend to be so open minded to appear like a person who "knows how to appreciate and respect Art". Which is utter bullshit. There's better and worse because of something called "value" in this world.

  • @CroissantOrange u have a good point, but if you call this ART, i have to disagree.this guy is just a technically brilliant player.hes just wanking off dude. please dont get holier than thou about this.you guitar nerds are hilarious about your guitar heroes.as far as MUSIC, there is no content that i can hear

  • @Arcenicum My favorite guitarist can beat your favorite guitarist up.

  • @Arcenicum

    Right on. Well said brother.

  • @713h832town281 You are, in fact, incorrect.

  • i met him cuz my neighbor knew him before he was famous. greg played in his band a bunch of times.

  • To anybody who knows, Greg is simply in the top 5 worlds best guitarists. Technique, ear, rythym and melody - who taught him?

  • If u got ear for bluegrass only. Dont belive u say that. U got better guitarists from down under (Gambale, Garsed etc :-)

  • Holy shit! Awesome.

  • Plectrum fueled gristleicious sculdugery at it`s best.

  • The boy really does cut all the meat off so as to deliver pure unadulterated GRISTLE! :)

  • @Frinkstobat reference to his pedal?

  • He's a crafty bastard...doing things I don't even fully understand...

  • he looks kinda like John Lithgow at times.

  • lady madonna children at your feet wonder how you manage to make end meet

  • Get some!

  • that's a danny gatton tribute tele he's playing

  • 'Fraid not Holmes......That sure looks like an American Deluxe Ash to me.

  • i always ask myself what that guy did smoke...he's so totally awesome, man!

    love him

  • Now thats some badass playin!!!

  • I cannot get enough of this guy!

  • can someone tell me what is that he's doing with the the pick and his hand in 1st position at 3:12? how does he do that? does anyone know? that is a neat little trick

  • It's just harmonics. You are ever so slightly resting your pick hand on the strings (I usually do this with the pinky side of my hand an not the thumb side), but the idea is to get harmonics while you perform simply hammer-ons and pull offs with your fretting hand. Notice how his fretting hand never left the fixed position.

  • Ahhh i see now, i thought he was doing that with his pick. so your saying its with his hand he's doing that?

  • I believe all he's doin' is scraping the string.

  • @infinitemes he's doing a trill with his left hand and using his thumb to lightly hit the string to get harmonics. i hope that wasnt to confusing to understand......

  • @infinitemes ...scrape lightly with a bit of crunch and false harmonics will pop out.....if you're lucky.Lol

  • @infinitemes He is sliding the edge of his thumb (not his pick), along the string that he is hammering/pulling off. There are harmonic nodes all along the string, and his thumb is hitting them along the way.

  • @infinitemes He is sliding the edge of his thumb (not his pick), along the string that he is hammering/pulling off. There are harmonic nodes all along the string, and his thumb is hitting them along the way.

  • @infinitemes

He is using his picking hands finger to create artificial harmonics out of the notes he is hammering/pulling off on his left hand

  • @infinitemes That's the side of his hand barely touching the strings going up and down - that's the sound it makes. He's not using the pick at all.

  • @infinitemes

What he is doing is hammering on notes with his left hand and sliding his thumb/fingers on his right hand up and down the strings which picks out artificial harmonics. Harmonics are strong at the 12th, 5th and 7th frets and at the 16th and 19th frets, there is also a harmonic on the string where fret 3.5 would be.

  • @infinitemes

He pulls of and hammers on on diffrent frets then with his pickin' hand he's touching the strings lightly with his palm on different places to get different harmonics, it's the same kind of harmonics you get if you don't fret anyting at for exemple the 12th fret

  • @infinitemes He pulls of and hammers on on diffrent frets then with his pickin' hand he's touching the strings lightly with his palm on different places to get different harmonics, it's the same kind of harmonics you get if you don't fret anyting at for exemple the 12th fret

  • @infinitemes He uses his thumb on the E string to get some cool harmonics. He's got a great instructional video that shows that and many other neat little tricks.

  • @infinitemes his right hand is just touching the strings lightly, creating a natural harmonic. you just lightly mute the string and the noise should come through. works best on a bridge pick-up

  • @infinitemes

He's not scraping the strings. He's playing harmonics. But he kindda reverses the technique. He shows how to do it in his "Guitar Gristle video". Left hand hamer on and using his right hand thumb to produce the harmonics. I can't do it yet. It's hard to master.

  • @infinitemes

He's not scrapping the strings. He's actually playing harmonics, but in a different manner than the usual way. He shows how to do it in his guitar gristle video. Left Hand hamer on and right hand thumb produces the harmonics. Hard to master. I can't do it yet.

  • @infinitemes If you continually do a "pull off "on any string with your fretting hand and then lightly drag your picking hand across the string it will create "artificial harmonics". It takes a little practice but it's a fairly easy trick. Watch his left hand a few times to get the idea and then watch his right hand a few times.

  • @infinitemes edderocks is correct. Looks like his using left hand to get whatever notes he want and then is lightly moving his pick across the strings in order to get harmonics. Similar to how if you are doing a pinch harmonic in a more "metal" context, you might have to "search" for the right harmonic

  • @infinitemes That's an old trick Eddie Van Halen used to do. He is lightly touching the string with his right hand while moving it up and down the string over the pickups and hammering on/pulling off the string with his left hand. It sets off harmonics on the string.

  • @infinitemes: He's using the back of his thumb nail as a sort of slide. he's sliding on the harmonics!

  • @infinitemes Hammer on with your left hand (preferably more than one note e.g. 2-3-2-5-2--3-2-5) while lightly sliding the right side of your right hand (though he is using his thumb or sausage fingers!) up the strings to make the harmonics sound. Works best with high gain and/or the bridge pickup. Eddie does it, Satriani does it - sounds cool!

  • @infinitemes It`s Just a Van Halen Trick Hammer on and pull off real hard and slide your pick up the strings.

  • @jkowens2281 yea thats all it is shit...that's all? how about how clean it is or different pressures being applied...tis not all!!

  • holy shit watch those huge fingers rip that fretboard apart! totally awesome!!

  • Rock on Greg.....very impressive...

  • Gristley goodness...

  • I saw this show in Portland. Robben Ford played the night before and Johnnie Winter played right after GK. He burned both of them to the ground. He's a real friendly guy, too. He signed autographs and talked with us for a good while. Great guy!

  • hendrixkixas, see what you have to look forward to? Gain a little weight, lose some hair, there you are. In another context, it's been said "Looks don't last, cookin' do.".

  • Damn. Greg Koch got old fast. Really sad. But his playing has gotten a whole lot better. I mean, I'm no where close, but I can tell he's improved.

  • Holy She- ite !!!

  • never mind ,meant the first 50 seconds
