It sounds like an engineer shifted his performance in the mixing. Eric is just off the beat the entire song, that's not possible to be that consistantly off the groove from beginning to end. If that was intentional it sounds awful!
Huh...he must have recorded a second take on this one. The original he started the intro while the audience was still applauding the end of the previous song. It was the vinyl soundpage in the 1985 Guitar Player magazine that had him on the cover.
Yep....... I had the vinyl record from that magazine and that version was much better. It's the one that aired on ACL........uploader if there's any way you could post that one too, that would rock.
if this is 1984 then it really is 6 years before this song was released?

yeah i noticed his time was pretty off. some musicians just find it easier working alone. it's allgood.

Everybody's commenting on how Johnson's timing is off.
Granted, he's not as articulate and precise as he is now. But if you ask me, it's the drummer who's not in the groove!

The other take was far superior.

Agreed the other take is better especially at the end. Interesting how similar they are.

His timing on the shuffle feel here wasn't as good as it later became.

the version that aired, and is the guitar player sound page is WAY better. And much better than the sterile CD release.

@headlesssoldier Right. The other '84 ACL take of this tune is definitive, in my opinion: it just ROARS....
