  • said it right...

  • This video went viral on North Carolina

  • Jamming and saying something are two entirely different things. Thanks for the props, love to all. Peace! ~ Scott - AspireNow (and sax man for Burning James, Black Market Trio, and BODY - feel free to Google - you'll find me)

  • This sucks

  • I DISAGREE NARADA OR ACUNA IS A MORE RIGHT CHOISE THAN ESKINE FOR THIS GROUPE

  • Hehe, this band has such a good hat selection.

  • Walden is good, but he definately ain't Erskine!

  • @mcoope15

It's too bad Erskine couldn't have sat in. They had Acuna there; should've put him on the skins imo

  • To me jazz bands rock so much harder than rock bands, because they are combining elegance, grace, emotion and intelligence with raw power.

  • @jmillzz2 Couldn't agree more !

  • Saw the band in San Francisco at Winterland, in 1975?, they were warm up for Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention, Frank was subdued a little, but was an excellent show but Weather Report stole the show.

  • if everyone on the world listened to weather report, there would be no hate. just loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for the jam

  • man jams harder than Lisa Simpson

  • HAAAAA it's KIRK WhALUM...

  • He is singing like an angel from that sax.Wonderfull.

  • Wow, Kirk Whalum sounds great on this!

  • @fodera6 Alphonso Johnson replaced Miroslav Vitous. Jaco replaced Alphonso.

  • @HowPeculiar1 Yes, yes. I know. I made a mistake.

  • @HowPeculiar1 Jaco replaced a black guy on bass? ...Holy fuck...

  • Actually, Jaco replaced Alphonso. Alphonso was on Mysterious Traveller, Tale Spinnin', and most of the Black Market album. I'm pretty sure he played bass on the studio version of the song Black Market. While Alphonso was in WR, I think the band explored funkier rhythyms and when Jaco was in the band, I think the music was more melodic in nature. Both bassists are pretty phenomenal in my book - two of the kats!

  • Holy shit! Just enjoy!

  • Man, some of you people even though you are avid jazz music lovers, you really dont know your musicians. @paraolicpete, the saxophonist is Wayne Shorter, one of the originators of the group.

  • @ izzionbass, my bru, this bass player's name is Alphonso Johnson and he was the original bass player before Jaco. Jaco replaced him after Alphonso struck out on his own. Actually I see someone already beat me to this. After just looking up the biography of Weather Report, it states that Mirislov Vitious was the origninal bassist, then Alphonso, the Jaco. Interesting!!!!

  • @ izzionbass, my bru, this bass player's name is Alphonso Johnson and he was the original bass player before Jaco. Jaco replaced him after Alphonso struck out on his own. Actually I see someone already beat me to this.

  • @fodera6 Wrong way round chaps

  • This is the drummer I saw playing with Jeff Beck in April.

  • This is the great Kirk Whalum on saxophone. Not as original as the great Wayne, but still very, very wonderful...............................

  • @fodera6 Actually, Alphonso was in the band first. Jaco replaced him...

  • @fodera6 Uh, no... you've got it backwards. Jaco replaced Alphonso. Jaco was replaced by Victor Bailey. Either way, Jaco's live version of this song is vastly superior to Alphonso's studio version.

  • @discolando totally agree!!!! listen to both! jaco's live bass line i can just kill my self till i die!!

  • @fodera6 Thank for your information. Jaco could not be replaced forever. It may be an alternative solution to call in another bass player. but what Jaco played was one in the whole damn universe!

  • with all respect to this bass player whoever it is . . Original Bass line is played by the most influential bassist of all time :JACO. His bass lines are unbelievably suicidal . . . just listen to the original "Black Market"

  • @izzionbass Jaco wasn't the original bassist on Black Market (and please, can someone get that saxophonist back in his fucking box!)

  • @popliphaha : jaco was the original bassist! when he died bass was replaced with alphonso and baily

  • @izzionbass I am afraid you are mistaken. Alphonso Johnson is the original bassist on Black Market. Jaco only plays on track 2 (Cannon Ball) & track 6 (Barbary Coast). Track 1 is Black Market and Johnson plays on it, not Jaco. When that arsehole murdered Jaco and we were robbed of one of the greatest musicians to ever walk the planet, Victor Bailey took over on bass on the album 'Procession'. Jaco plays on the live version of Black Market on the album '8.30'.

  • @popliphaha Luc Havan robbed the world of an alcoholic street person. Jaco Pastorius robbed us of one of the greatest musicians to ever walk the planet years prior through his substance abuse and unwillingness (or inability) to accept treatment for his mental illness. By the time Pastorius committed suicide by bouncer, he was a spent force.

  • @izzionbass and also did alphonso johnson play the original line of black market.

  • @izzionbass This line is from Johnson, Jaco arrived later into Weather Report :-)

  • @izzionbass I'm afraid you choose the wrong example: on the Black Market album, both alphonso johnson and jaco are playing. If memory serves, i'd say Jaco plays only on barbary coast, but i can be wrong. BTW, I agree on the main point: Jaco is THE man

  • @izzionbass jaco replaced alphonso johnson who actually recorded the original bassline. jaco only recorded "cannonball" and "barbary coast" on black market. he joined the band while they were still in the process of recording the album. read the jaco bio by bill milkowski

  • Very well done, by Mr. Whalum!!!!!

  • This is not Weather Report. Without Wayne Shorter, there was no Weather Report. While Kirk Whalum is doing a "modern style" solo here, his tone and playing suffers from the showy movement. He plays best when he stood still and focused. His solo also fails to tell the story of "Black Market" as Wayne does so splendidly on the album and in live versions. I feel like Whalum is just jamming and showing off his chops but really isn't saying anything. I still enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing!

  • @aspirenow

    word.

could not have said it better myself. He does not suck, just not Wayne. Or, Weather Report.

  • @aspirenow - You put into words exactly what I was thinking when I was watching this clip - I enjoyed it all the same. Thanks

  • @aspirenow Very well stated. I would have to say that I concur with it.

  • The bass guitar is an Alembic. circa 1976

  • @saiyan135 and @dansaghin1, Les Claypool is probably the best bassist ever... him or Burton.

    RIP Burton.

  • i recongize the talent but not what im into... Dream Theater and Death are more interesting

  • Being a jazz musician myself for the last 30 years, I believe there's only one Jaco. Johnson is good, no doubt about that, but...he ain't no Jaco. When people who know are asked who is the greatest bass player ever, they most often either respond "Jaco" or "Jamerson". Personally, I love them both. There will only be one "Jaco, one "James Jamerson" and only one Weather Report.

  • jajaja joe tiene un buen gorro como siempre

  • best black market ever, love the rithm section

  • Nada do que foi será, de novo do jeito que já foi um dia, tudo passa, tudo sempre passará!

  • where's jaco, he's better than alpphonse fuck the alphonse johnson era, jaco pastorius forever

  • @saiyan135

you rasist fuck, enjoy the music stupid

  • @dansaghin1 hey !, I'm not racist, just think that Jaco Pastorius bass player who was always better alphonse, alphonse I think that plays the bass well, but never arrived at the heels of jaco.

  • @saiyan135

come on man...you know better...how can u say such a thing...i am a bassplayer myself, there is no such thing as best bassplayer or so...think again

  • @dansaghin1 bro, I too am a bassist, and well that pony is more influential and had a wide domination of the instrument, as I told you, I know that Alphonse is a great bassist, but not as much as it was smack, you do not get offended but not alphonse best bass players like Jaco Pastorius, James Jamerson or geezer butler, also, everyone has their opinion, but Jaco has more experience.

  • @saiyan135

now i agree with u, it`s how you express yourself.

however i think alphonso is grooving harder than jaco, he shaped my playing more than jaco, believe it or not,.

offcourse I pay my respects to jaco but i am more influenced by alphonso (so I like to think)

  • @dansaghin1 ok friend, I respect the influences and opinions of all, so no problem, I like the way you think and defend your beliefs, your tastes are very good, peace of bassist to bassist :)

  • kirk whalum is horrible

  • @salinasbeat Just curious what you don't like about his playing?

  • @davidhilton . He's not sensitive to the music. He could be playing with anybody and would do exactly the same thing. At least from what I've seen and heard.

  • A triumph

  • today's music is king of a "sport" or something !! look at rap ,rave , Madona etc ... jump and show your curves and Ti**S

WR is mental ,, intelect !

  • great band...you have to love Alphonso Johnson at bass. He is groovin hard.

This is what bass is all about.

  • its a shame that 99 percent of people these days arent even intelligent enough to understand this kind of music any more

  • @MahavishnuOrchestra1 Well phrased. There was soooooo much going on in the'70s musically it was crazy and I am not just saying in the jazz or fusion arena. Everywhere! 75 to 85 was magical. Ah, I miss being in highs school!

  • @chillichomper There's still a lot going on today. Alas not in the focus of the public eye. The mainstream is all about "music" that is being "produced" much like a product in a factory imho.

  • @MahavishnuOrchestra1 quite arrogant. Taste and intelligence have never been linked. I enjoy this music alot, but I would never say that someone who doesn't like it 'isn't intelligen't enough'.

  • @hermanshermits124124 oh yes they do my friend. music is stimulation for the brain. when i hear this type of music it makes me think. it makes me imagine things, i am sent on an intellectual high. most mainstrem music now is all in 4/4 timing. most of it sounds the same. much less creativty involed. therfore less intellegence is needed in actually creating the music most of the mainstream artis dont even kno how to play an instrument. hence its listeners are not experiencing this magic!!

  • grazie aragorn. avevo dei dubbi nostalgici ma mi sembrano anche meglio!! vanno come un treno!

  • Sax should be Wayne Shorter.

  • sounds like the old BBC Ceefax music

  • anche se la formazione non ha niente a

che fare con quella dei vecchi W.R.

resta un'esecuzione degna di essere nel

meglio della musica di quel periodo.

  • why doesn't kirk play like this on his albums

  • Fools, by the way. Zawinul was the man, the rest were just pickups.

  • Bad sound... but what a vibe !!

  • Boy that Kirk guy on tenor...he can really whale 'em out loud !! Badumpshhhhhh !!

  • Con o sin Wayne Shoter y Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report es Weather Report (sin contar con el genial Joe Zawinul).

  • It's very well done, but WR without Wayne and Jaco is just a cover band

  • Johnson played bass on the original version!! (Yes, there was life before Jaco.)

  • I'm a big fan of AJ, I used to own his solo albums, but I vastly prefer Jaco's writing and playing-just personal preference really.

  • No, I agree that Jaco took them to a new level -- and vice-versa. But AJ definitely has a right to be there.

  • By the way -- I saw them in the EARLY 70s, when Miroslav Vitouš was playing upright bass & using wah-wah & other electronic effects. They were BROKE & played a fundraiser at the Bitter End in NYC. So our whole band went down & sat about 10 feet away & said "WHAT THE F*#!!?. Hey, who knew?

  • wow. just wow.

  • My name is myroslav and i play bass too :)

  • absolutely not

  • Yeah Alphonso was before Jaco in the band.

  • the sax is fuckin jammmmmmin omg

  • @justinbontje The Sax player is over-doin' it and is not a patch on WS.

  • Narada Michael Walden is a monster. More talent in one finger than most drummers have on all four limbs. Check out his Mahavishnu clips to see what transhuman drumming is. What a shame he has mostly produced popular music and given up drumming, unlike Billy Cobham who continues to pound it out. Narada, drummer, RIP (Narada, the man, hope you live a long, long time.)

  • Narada Michael Walden in this clip is marvelous!

  • this is a funkier version of black market...

    great, just great

think i like it more than the others...mainly because of alphonso on bass

  • U preffer that guy over Jaco?

  • In the line of great, innovative bass players, Alphonso comes before Jaco. And he was in WR before Jaco. The drummer here, Narada Michael Walden, was in WR briefly, for two tunes on Black Market (including the title tune) and had previously played with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Acuna plays full drums on one WR record.

  • Sorry!It's '95.???Weather Report ??

  • Alphonso Johnson !

    grate!

    but not '95.

  • Alphonso is one of my teachers. He's probably the coolest acting person I have ever met.

  • they did this the year i was born!

  • Definitivamente Weather Report es toda una Institucion del Jazz. Bravo!

  • Jaco was such an extroverted talent, that he needed to coexist with less restrictive circumstances as a canvas for what he was doing. He was trying to bring a fresh point of view from an instrumnet that had a background status, and push a new direction from a new style of musical entity.

WR was strong before and after Jaco, but it had a unique flavor with him, that cannot be denied.

  • For sure, Jaco was a bad ass mother fucker, but unfortunately he started to repeat himself, and mental illness eventually got him :(

  • what a jam!

  • Al Johnson was deeper than Jaco (who was brilliant but unhidden). this rhythm section is ballsy from 2' - 4' off the hook bass and drums, just chaotic, ready to explode/fall apart like Janis Joplin.

  • Oh, thank you, socrates1818...

Usually, I don't write much here but WR is my No 1 EVER, and all this 'Jaco mania' drives me (almost) crazy. To me (and most of the THEN critics, the absolutely best WR stuff comes from 1971 - 76. (to me, personally, 73-76.)

Pastorius was a genius and probably the best bass PLAYER ever but didn't really bring much CREATIVELY to WR. His joining the band, sadly, marked the beginning of the slow decline of this amazing band.

  • Greetings Mr. PrZemek.

Now i understand a lil bit more the basis in your perspective about this "Jaco-Weather Report" topic (anyway, i still respect it).

But in my opinion. I think this "Jaco-Zawinul" combo gave at WR, of course; the popularity (obviously given by Jaco's "eccentricityies") but most of all, the enrichment of the WR tunes by the musical perspective Jaco had.

Maybe i think this 'cause of the "afro-cuban-latin style" WR got "increased" since Jaco's entrance.

    Cheers y A DARLE, man.

  • Nothing against 'afro-cuban-latin-style', my friend. All for... OK, sophisticated may sound aloof, but more interesting music. The point is, you have to be really patient and listen many times to the same tune to get it, otherwise it doesn't seem to make much sense. Back in my time, we had all year to get to know ONE album, now if you, younger fans, listen to all of it at once, there is no way you ever get it. And it's your loss b/c THAT music (71-76) is amazing... Try it, one song at a time.

  • Oh, Black Market, Three Clowns, Elegant People were still 'close to this old style'. But studio versions, don't like this one.

  • Hehehe. Good point, fellow. And it's quite interesting to read your whole comment.

Maybe we, "young fans", have a more "popular conception" of WR music. But in my "short experience" i've found that music, in a "band-group" perspective, goes beyond individuals. And i've got to admit that my first impression from WR came from the Jaco era. Maybe that's why is hard for me to catch your very own perspective (besides a well marked generation line between us ;D)

Music's been made for being appreciated

  • You are definitively a Shit, my friend!

  • You're making a pretty good point here, friends of Shits. Bravo! Anything else?

  • This is good but better came when the space opened up. Narada was playing Maha style. The beauty is the space btw the notes and that takes a lot of maturity, like the jaco line up

  • This is o.k. but I think the best lineup is Jaco, Wayne, Jose, and Acuna.

I'm going out on a limb here but, Billy Cobham was never in WR right, if he was that would've been boss!

  • where is wayne??? hehe

  • quite right ... Weather report is weather report only when Shorter and Zawinul play. Some persons say that pastorius is the soul of WR. That's not the true. Jaco is probably one of the best bass player ever but ... Well, this soxophonist is awful, he doesn't respect the way shoter used to play.

    Too many notes, i think...

  • Plus this drummer wears a very faggy hat. Erskine or Acuna would never have done that.

  • You ARE kidding about the "faggy hat" comment, right?

  • No, IT IS a faggy hat.

  • kirk whalum is NOT awful he is a great tenor saxophonist in his own right and he played the song in his style which is in itself a mark of a great saxophonist - he doesnt try to imitate shorter. and seriously....faggy hat? just enjoy good musicianship and stop being rediculous.

  • You are the faggy hat, faggy hat.

  • Narada Michael Walden is one of my favorite WR drummers, he contributed alot both as a percussionist and a drummer. Alphonso is also highly appriciated. :)

  • Not many people give credit to alphonso johnson's contributions to weather report, just jaco

  • i second that...and god knows i think jaco deserves every ounce of credit he gets/got, but alfonso is a truly beautiful bassist.

  • Narada Michael Walden is my favorite drummer of all time hands down.

  • que buena cancion!!!!!!!!!!

  • does anyone know what bass alphonso jhonson is playing ? it seems quite like a alembic, but i'm not sure. The only thing i know about this bass is that it sounds pretty great !

  • It looks to me like a very early Modulus fretless.

  • @fodera6

I think thi sis the bass he played back in the day with weather report. In that case it is a custom hand made bass. Check out his article from the early 70's in Downbeat, he talks about that bass in the article.

  • Musicplayer59 - I recall in a Downbeat interview from the late 70's Al Johnson stating that he had his instruments handmade for him. My guess - It is likely that this bass is a one off original.

BTW +1 on the sound. Al Johnson's recordings from this period are my fav for Fretless tone !

  • kirk whalum sucks

  • @salinasbeat , what do you do for a living, sell cherry at the fruit market???

i guess you play better the sax...

  • Thank fuck thats your last reply cos you sound more of a prick with every comment Try not speaking to people like your the only one who plays a musical instument To mention how long you've played as if it gives you more authority in your argument is arrogant

  • WHAT A PAIR OF FUCKING CLOWNS!!!

  • grazer770 the reason you suggested to call it quits with rwlane was because he fucked you hands down & he's totally right

there was bass playing before & after Jaco .Jimi changed guitar Jaco changed the bass

  • see reply to rwlane

  • Ok checkout Punk Jazz track 3 with Little Beaver , in fact checkout the whole thing & then get back to me & point out the gimmicks & then post yourself playing cos you must be fuckin awesome to be able to say a lot of what Jaco Pastorius played was gimmicky

  • Zawinul like everybody ,knew the best time for WP was when Jaco was there , he clearly hated that . Joe was a great musician but his arrogance was sometimes to much . I to only have WP albums with Jaco on . If you look through all WP videos on Youtube Jaco comments win by miles . RIP The worlds greatest bass player

  • ...and you call Zawinul arrogant-! The best time for Jaco was when he was with Zawinul - he just couldn't keep it togetrher on his own -and before you get all upitee his illness is well documented and very sad and no one should die the way he did - only in america eh - have one of the most original bass players the world has ever seen and let him waste away and be murdered - only in america...

  • How many heroine addicts have you tried to help?

  • ...you cretin - he was bi-polar not a heroine addict - you want me to introduce you to his family i'm sure they would appreciate that shit...

  • Never said he wasn't bi polar. Yes he did purchase heroine from my uncle (who is dead also) RIP.

  • absolutely right...that stuff only happens here. oh, the obligatory god bless america! and keep voting for the two parties numbskulls. whatever you do, don't "throw away your vote" by voting for a true public-servant. hooray, america!

  • i dont think he was arrogant, more annoyed of peoples ignorance. as a begining bass player, around the time of heavy weather, i too was smitten by jacos sound and dexterity. just as jaco wanted to be the "jimmi hendrix of the bass" i wanted to be the next jaco. but as i developed and matured as a musician i began to realise that a lot of what he did was gimmicky. but that is what grabs your attention and makes you listen. jaco may well be "the greatest bass player ever". but not most talented

  • what you say doesn't add up. Gimmicky? thats just way off man. Watch his tutorial video and tell me it's gimmicky...Jaco was way ahead. I'd rather take Herbie Hancocks word over yours anyway. Keep practising.

  • thanks for reply. well funny you should say that about herbie because my all time favourite jaco composition is "continuum", that herbie played on. and he played on herbies record "4am".

and i can honestly say , without a shadow of a doubt, paul jacksons style and talent is far better suited to herbies sound. its just that i prefer my basses to sound bassy. but you cant really say an apple is better than an orange. thanks, i will keep practicing.

  • i know what your saying - one mans meat etc. but you never addressed the "gimmicky" question?. and i think its obvious the contribution jaco made to the bass instrument and music in general, will outweigh paul jackson, victor wooten or anyone else who came along. Plus he was funny with it.

  • what did i mean by gimmicky? over use of harmonics for one. over playing is gimmicky to me. as a bass player i know how ridiculously easy it is to impress people by doing all the flashy stuff but useless if you cant groove. which he could! so in one sense he did dumb it down a bit ( he was not jimmi hendrix ). no doubt about his contribution to the bass guitar and market . also a lot of what he played was not his own but he made it his with his sound so you cant argue with that. thanks

  • " doing all the flashy stuff is useless if you can't groove-which he could" a tad non sensical if i might be so bold.. it strikes me that you see Jaco in the same way people come to see most genius. It gets over familiar and therefore breeds contempt. But it doesn't diminish the initial impact.....There ARE other great players, no doubt about it, but the fundamental thing is that HE changed the instrument forever.

ps you dont have to be a bass player to be guilty of over playing

  • if you didnt understand then i couldnt have made it clear. listen mate i have had these types of arguements with beatle and elvis fans when they just cant see past there idols and would have you believe music didnt exist before them, maybe it didnt for them. call it quits cause we will go round in circles. and we havent even got around to stanley clarkes gimmicks!

  • damn right you never made it clear. none of your comments have ever made a real point.

It's presumptious, not to mention short-sighted, to assume that i idolise ANYBODY. To me, it just shows your conceit to anybody elses musical tastes.

    Mate.

  • i was responding to a point about what someone had said joe zawinul had said about jaco. and having played music myself for thirty odd years, i said i could see what he (joe) means and he may have a point. so if you want to argue against him then i would say you are arrogant. but i just think you want to argue for arguments sake buddy, so this will be the last reply.

  • that makes the least sense out of all of 'em...

  • this is not the forum for an in depth discussion. so if i didnt make it clear please dont worry about it. you dont make sense to me either. feel free to get the last word in.

  • whatever

  • I just wanted to support grazer on the remark about Paul Jackson - what a fantastic player that guy is !! There is such depth in what he does. Ya know - I can copy Jaco to some degree (though not to his level of genius), but I can't even come close to copping Paul Jackson. IMHO- Both of these guys are pure genious and it is apples and oranges to me but wow - Jackson got da funk !!.

  • thanks for your comment.

jackson had an amazing sense of syncopation and that fender precision tone was unique.

although i didnt think much of this track am hearing more of alphonso's solo stuff.

again another seriously under estimated player.

  • questa versione di black market la trovo strepitosa...narada per me una scoperta, e il sassofonista a dir poco eccezionale

  • Great.

  • So did Zaminul just say "ok Kirk you take this one". This seemed (in my mind, I'm not asking anyone to agree with me) like a father taking his son to the park to shoot some hoops then lowering the height so the kid can do as many slam dunks as he wants, then calling his friends over to set him up perfect for lay-ups. I don't know... maybe I'm way off...

  • I miss Jaco... :'(

  • I don't. Alphonse Johnson suits far better for Zawinul's purposes

  • That song ended to soon. Those guys were going off! Great jam. The drummer is amazing. To bad there was no Jaco. Anymore on this concert???

  • Hi fodera6! You wish it were longer-I wish it was shorter...

  • yes, like me, you wish it was longer, I wish it was Shorter ;)

  • Hear that 2:20~ Sax is talking we should probably listen. The whole group added a special dynamic to the eclectic sound that we hear. Wasn't one person!!

  • My bad I meant Joe Zawinul.

  • I met Joe Wazanul at the Grammies 2004 in New York before he passed. That was a honor to be in his presence.

  • who the hell is Joe Wazanul
