Guys stir the sugar, potassium nitrate and baking soda outside so you don't accidentally get even a grain of it in the flame cuz it'll smoke the whole house and it takes about an hour or 2 to get the smoke out. But the smoke grenades do work very well! Emergency grenades!

nope... chemistry demands the heat to alter the molecules along with the postassium nitrate. thus mixing it with plain caramel doesnt suffice.. the caramelisation of suger is a chemical process wich needs to happen in this case

@matty3662 The products of this reaction are Nitrogen gas, Carbon Dixoxide gas, water vapour, and either KNO2 or K2CO3 (potassium nitrite or Potassium carbonate) depending on ratios of reaction.

The water vapour and nitrogen gas are harmless if breathed in. The CO2 is only dangerous to breath in high concentrations, and the Potassium compounds formed are both toxic solids which you will not breath anyway.

The unburnt sugar in the reaction will make the smoke smell sweet, very pleasant :)

@SkylerCowley No worries. But yes, while i dont recommend sitting in a cloud of it for hours on end, its almost completely harmless. The addition of certain types of dyes to the smoke may make it more harmful though (such as solvent dyes, or some powdered dyes which are irritants if inhaled)

I tried making this today. Heres a few tips. Do NOT cook this in your kitchen or in your house. Use a campfire stove outside, because the first two times I tried, it caught fire. Also, you might want to caramelize the sugar first, and then add the potassium nitrate. Cook the sugar very slowly so it gets that liquidy texture.

Another thing, you can also do this without cooking it, just mixing the two ingredients. it just won't burn as long.

@phunkyphantom619 i havent made one yet but i suspect it might be that the heat is to high try a lower flame(stove) or lower power on electric one oh and try to stir it most of the time that could also be a possible reaction(like making pasta if the heat is to high it starts to make bubles and overflow and if u dont stir it gets stuck in the bottom since its metal) also try starting whit the frying pan or whowever u do it cold
