This game uses chip FM on japanese Master System/Mark 3 for better sound quality

I thought Chris Hülsbeck made the music to R-Type...
But whatever. Koji Kondo, Chris Hülsbeck, Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway... great composers, we won't forget them.

I know I have one of the later R-Types, but I never got around to playing it. Listening to this video, though, really makes me want to crack out that game and compare it to this one. Amazing stuff.

I sure missed the bosses' song. It's the best in the game, almost heavy metal.

Not sure. I know its on American and Jap stores.

Cool, thanks.

I prefer the TG-16 version myself. Still, impressive that the SMS can handle a port of this game.
Rengolde 3 years ago 2
I've wanted to feature the original arcade version for a while now, but since I can't seem to track it down, I might look into the TG16 one.

i didn't know there's an older r-type lol! 1988!!! whoo!

Just as a 'heads up', Chris Hülsbeck only composed the intro themes for the C64 and Amiga versions, mate.
Absolutely fantastic series of videos you've got here. Many thanks! :)

Thanks man. Happen to know who the main composer actually is by any chance?
Masato Ishizaki

R-type was released in 1987, Gradius in 1985 but R-type is a classic in it's own right.

If I had this game when I was young, I'd probably get creeped out every time I heard that scary intro music. Music pretty nice here.
doppleganger4827 3 years ago
You should have gone with the NES version in my opinion. It sounded the best for what kind of soundtrack it was.
nazraen 3 years ago
There is no NES version of R-Type

SEGA always had a worse sounding audio chip. Ugh. Nice game though regardless.
