The grand irony is that Obama is completely cathedral-like. Even more-so than Bush was. And he's a perfect demonstration of WHY we need openness and transparency in our leadership.
I believe open source to be: revealing all information in order to expand and perfect.
obama open source? it is a nice idea for every government to do this, it creates transparency and it shifts from using only your own knowledge to using your own plus everyone else his.
it proved to be succesfull for many companies, the first I can think of are T-mobile and Nuon (battle of concepts).
From what I have heard, Libertarianism is for everything becoming free-market. Using a completely capitalistic approach including patents and the like to protect groups from unfair practices: ie change 1 sentence in a book; sell it as your own.
But free/open source software is against that kind of practice. Nothing is owned so nothing can be stolen, take freely and give back freely.
Open source can't be labeled, the closest match IMHO is: Willing Socialism with an unusual free market streak.

Biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard. Obama is a tyrant plain and simple, any talk of open source is just a ploy to get more voters/supporters. Don't jump on the obama bandwagon.
The irony here is quite think considering how the previous President acted. I can't say that Obama will be everything he promises, but tyrant isn't a term applicable to Obama.
absolutely not true, it is people like you whom are selfish and me me me types whom have put this country where it is starting with you and Mr.Bush. To clarify somethings here, we as a country should embrace open source software such as Ubuntu and OpenOffice in schools because it will free up tons of cash being paid to microsoft. So it will work as cost saving solution. So open source is not a bad idea and it is not socialism is a way to better humanity as a whole. Greedy Bastards!

You're forgetting one thing Socialism is a me me thing, it's what can the government do for me. How is it going to benefit me, what do I get out of it. Where is my check, my health care service. You want those things you can get them by working and paying bills and doing the stuff thats needs to be done for yourself screw the government giving it to you for nothing
And don't tell me I don't support open source, I have written articles, donated to open source projects & use Linux (Opensuse 11.0)
Oh it figures why your so upset is that whole Opensuse thing. Well the fact that you support Opensuse says it all. This particular distro and it's parent company are in bed with Microsoft to pretty much destroy Gnu/Linux. It is great that you are donating your time. No one is saying here you should get everything for free, we are saying Open Standards and charge for service not products. You think the Open Source community does not work hard? I sure as hell think they are and do!
Great that you support open source. However, the open source ethos are not socialist. Either is Obama. However, if socialism means that we look after the sick and the old and the young of our society I vote for it. But thats not what open source is.

If Obama moves forward with the socialist future that he's described for America.. then we'll have no choice but have to all move to Open Source! Because after paying 50-60% income tax (like all the other Scandinavian/European countries have) we don't be able to AFFORD COTS software any longer, in the private OR public sectors!
even with the income tax their standard of living is still much higher then the average american.
But this has nothing to do with socialism, it is all about science: if you were going to invent a new type of car, wouldn't you need the blueprints of 'old cars' as study-material? but if they hide these blueprints, then you would first spend years of reverse-engineering old stuff before you could improve and add new stuff. To invent and improve, you need the source(code). and lots of brains.

Obama has his source code open to the public, but is programed by men behind the curtain.
