This is fascinating information, likely shot through with Hollywood legend as many of these anecdotes are (Danny Thomas catching her in a commercial and casting her? Really?). What was more likely the performance that led to Feldon being cast as 99 was THE MAN FROM UNCLE episode "The Never Never Affair," in which Feldon played a proto-99 wannabe spy opposite Vaughn, McCallum and guest star Cesar Romero. A wonderful episode that all Feldon fans should seek out.
What a beautiful woman. I met her in a bookstore in Manhattan where I was a bookseller. She was so sweet, a real lady and beautiful. I told her I know I know u from somewhere and she just giggled. I didnt realize who it was until she left. Barbara Feldon. Love you!!
Not only an enjoyable actress, but when she hosted the talk show 80's Woman, showed intelligence and class, something members of The View could learn from.
Speaking of intelligence, here's a bit of BF trivia -- back in 1957 she won $64,000 on the TV show "$64,000 Question". Her specialty category was 'Shakespeare'.
Unfortunately, I never saw "80's Woman" and clips don't seem to be online.
I was a teenager when "Get Smart" was on TV and, like all my peers, I was completely in love with Agent 99. Barbara Feldon was one of the earliest sex symbols and she was just perfect.
@JudgeBluey If I weren't happily married already, I'd fight you for her. :-) She is a lovely woman and -- from all accounts -- a wonderful human being.
@xbx2010 Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, and one of my personal favorite actresses these days. That said, I still think Barbara Feldon was the best 99.
For me, it wasn't just about sheer beauty, either. Barbara Feldon's mannerisms as 99 really struck me. There was something about the way she spoke, gestured, walked, etc. She just gave off this aura of elegance. That lady was, and still is apparently, a charismatic woman.
That's just my opinion though; you are absolutely entitled to yours.
@DigitalOberon I agree. Anne Hathaway is pretty and a damned good actress, but she just didn't bring what Barbara did to 99. There was a quirkiness about her that was so endearing.
I love The agent 99 and I'm a huge fan of Get Smart series!!!
If you like Barbara Feldon or Agent 99 from Get Smart series, visit my website, look for barbarafeldon webnode, there you will find many photos, videos and information about the actress Barbara Feldon
Barbara Feldon, Lynda Carter and Barbara Eden - in my opinion, the top three most beautiful woman in all of my tv watching memories - - and all of whom have aged quite gracefully too....
Tonight, 6/27/10, was the Caramoor Gala in Catona NY and Barbara Feldon was seated at my table. The poise and grace of this woman is already legend but has any woman, ANY WOMAN ever looked better at this age?!?! Almost literally stunning. One almost wonders if 'her daughter' is masquerading as her a la 'Fedora'.
I remember her mother visiting sometime during either pregnancy or birth of the twins. I don't remember that 99's mom had a name. Someone can let me know if they remember.
@Shiftworker247: Last night I watched the episode where 99's mother is kidnapped. Hilarious episode. She reminded me of Bette Midler in "Ruthless People".
Barbara Feldon you were and still are one of the most gorgeous, classy, elegant, and funny women to ever be on T.V. Get Smart is one of the all time funniest shows ever.
She has such a unique personality and charisma. There really hasn't been another actress like her. In the Get Smart movie 99 was an annoying know-it-all nag. When Barbara helped Max out in the same way, she made it seem sweet and caring.
I don't believe there are many (if any) tv or movie roles that could only be played by one actor (or actress); but if ever there were such a role, "Get Smart's" "Agent 99", as played by Barbara Feldon, was it !
In my opinion, it was a role she was born to play ..............and the phenomenal chemistry she shared with the late, great Don Adams, was plainly, and simply, TV MAGIC!!!!
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Ms. Barbara Feldon in November 2009, and she was gracious enough to have her photo taken with my son, and then a second photo with bot my son and I. She is a remarkable lady. She is beautiful from the inside out. Definately 100% class. I will always love her. My son (17 years old) loves all the 'Get Smart' reruns. We went to see the movie, 'Get Smart', starrinf Anne Hathaway, and he didn't like her. He was disappointed it wasn't Ms. Feldon in the movie.
"Classy" doesn't even begin to describe this woman... I always loved Barbara Feldon (sexy and sweet all at once.) Now, I love her even more- how many times do you hear an actor or actress who actually has good things to say about a role they played on a television series? So often, you hear a great deal of crying about how a character limited their lives forever after, but Ms. Feldon has only great things to say about the role of 99 and the show. God I love this woman!
What a joy to watch! Barbara Feldon is one CLASS act. Pretty, smart, witty, talented....and PERFECT as "99". Thanks a LOT for sharing this with us! So many of us remember this lady QUITE fondly! :)
I had the hots for this classy dame when I was in middle school and high school, shucks I still got the hots for her and I'm only 23. Thank God for re-runs and the DVD collection. My God, she was yummy in 1965... wait a minute, my dad was born in '65. Who cares, she looked and looks amazing in this interview!
MMmmm yeah! 99 u lookin' good and still refined as ever! fknguy is like every guy when i say...ms. feldon is as beautiful now as she was back in the day!
What a great interview with a VERY refined lady! I especially enjoyed Ms. Feldon's closing comments....a class act from start to finish! Get Smart was so totally entertaining......loved it then and now...
Barbara Feldon is still so cute she could give Sandra Bullock lessons in it. Amazing. She was the best "straight woman" in comedy since Gracie Burns, too. 86 would have been a Zero without 99.
@globalpilot76 Nice reference to the Lloyd Cole song "Perfect Skin". Ah, all the memories are flooding back. It's a Saturday night You Tube Nostalgia Night for me! Themes to M*A*S*H* and Get Smart are the best! /sniff sniff
I was 8 then, now I'm 47, my son is 9. We both love 99. She was so young & beautiful in the first episode. Thanks the whole team for all the wonderful jokes - over and over again.
amazing just how many actors actually live in NYC, I once ran into Jakie Mason walking down restaurant row 46th street and couldn't remember his name, I said: I know you I've seen you on t.v. before but can't remember your name lol
My first "crush" on a TV actress was on Barbara Feldon. That was in 1966, when I was a mere six years of age. In the intervening decades, how is it that I have fallen all to hell, while Ms. Feldon is more beautiful than ever? Love that smile and those great cheekbones -- but what truly radiates from her is enormous intellect and humor. A class act.
One of the sad aspects of television. Roles kill your future career. Barbara did an episode of McMillan & Wife and did a performance so good it SHOULD have jump started her career in the drama field. But casting directors saw her and saw 99 so they took their roles elsewhere.
It was terrible she was so badly type cast she never worked again. She had real star quality in Get Smart. She was born to be in front of the camera and the perfect foil for Max.
@sirbrek --- have you ever heard of Charlize Theron, Hali Barry, Selma Hyack? What about all the "Bond" women? Geeze, there are hundreds of beautiful stars out there... Do u live under a rock?
I'm old enough to remember watching the pilot episode of "Get Smart." I was rolling on the floor laughing. Idiot agent Maxwell Smart jumps in a cab and yells "Follow that car!" and spends the whole ride clinging to the side of the cab because it took off before he could shut the door. He spends the episode with the obvious babe Agent 99 and is so clueless that at the end when she takes off her hat for the first time he stares at her and says, "So you're a girl!" It was a great show.
Barbara, was, (and is), a total package of sexy appeal, beauty, class, and talent. I guess I mimic most other guys that were young men or boys back then, because she was was first "crush", the hottest chick around. Funny thing is I look back now and think I had great taste even back then...
Barbara aged real well. When "Get Smart, Again!" came out, she almost looked the same 20 years later, but in obviously the late 80's/early 90s look. Barbara Feldon is one of a kind. We miss Don Adams.
"Why Max?" of the series BELONGS to this woman. Her clips, and maybe some of the character CHIEF that says "Why Max?" should be, or perhaps already have been, featured towards "WiMax" commercials.
Maybe that's a tough find.
Somewhere, someone maybe has seen some such comic clips online.
I loved this girl in the 70's. Even one of my girl friend resembled her. Watching this I can see what that girl friend looks like now. She's about 10 years older than me...but she's still a babe!!
In the '70s, a beautiful woman pulled in for gas where I was working. Her BMW had California plates and she wore a mink coat. She came into the station to keep warm and we spoke for a while. She was such a friendly, outgoing, beautiful woman - and I didn't even recognize her until she handed me her Bank Americard! I saw her name on the card and I said, "Are you THE Barbara Feldon?!"
"That's me!", she said.
I put $11.00 into the till and I kept both copies of her autographed credit card slip.
I was in the audience of the Smother's Brother's Comedy Hour back in the 60's when I was about 14 years old and I got to watch Barbara Feldon ride a beautiful horse around on their huge stage and Barbara's legs just kept going and going. The best I've ever seen. She is the most beautiful sitcom actress ever. I wish more ladies in today's world had her friendly personality. If anyone has that video clip, please upload it.
Starting at 1:16, they talk about the commercial that really put her on the map, but it's spliced so you don't get the real story. The way the have it leaves you thinking the commercial was for a carpet. Revlon didn't make carpets. The commercial was for Top Brass, a men's hair cream. They were big then- Top Brass, Brylcreem, Vitalis, etc. They still make them, they come in tubes like toothpaste. That's the commercial where she said, "Go get 'em tiger!", which makes no sense for carpets.
"It's made my life so sweet. When people recognize you it just makes the day sunnier. It's like if we were just more polite to each other, and smiled at each other more, without recognizing each other from television, how much sweeter life would be, wouldn't it?"
Everyone who says "She still looks great!" needs to bring their monitor back to Best Buy for a refund. Her cheeks are caved in. There's a line that runs from each ear to the corners of her mouth, like Nicholson's joker. Everything above that line has been paralyzed by Botox.
It's sad that Hollywood has women thinking they need to do that to themselves. This woman is so charming, she could do this interview with a bag on her head, and I'd hang on every word. Instead, I stare at her "mask".
Sexy in the 60's... still sexy now. So she's had a little "work" done I think she still looks great. It's too bad that some women feel the need to mess with nature and I think she would have looked great without it. However, as a man, I know I can't understand the pressure that so many women face as they age. So I say, If it makes her feel better, then who are we to "tsk"? She'll always be #1 on my list!

Barabara Feldon in Get Smart and in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, is the ideal woman that every man wants to marry.
EnochBethany 3 years ago 4
Sally Ann Howes was the woman in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang not Barbra Feldon.

Agent 99 is one of my heros...She is smart and professional, always dresses modestly and tastefully. She is a good role model for any young woman.

I love Barbara Feldon!! She is so sweet, beautiful and intelligent!! :D

The Get Smart movie sucked completely. That character who was supposed to be 86 was so blah. What a disgrace to one of the best sitcoms in history.
