VJs are for the background...as long as that is clear then I can appreciate this on a "its OK for the background" level...
just as long as we are also clear that VJs only exist so Pioneer can sell more stuff, without all the promotional efforts of Pioneer nobody would know or care what a VJ was..
I swear to you (and others that have made similar comments) that the djm800 was turned on. What you are seeing is LIVE. To get a clean video image the process is to blast the scene with light and then close the Iris on the camera. This reduces image noise and gives sharp focus. The down-side is that you loose the subltey self-illuminated LEDS and Dials. The performance was recorded four times on 2x cameras (and the 3X decks taking outputs from the 2XDVJ1000 and mixed output).
yes it's on because you can see the vu meter. It's propably looking off because of the lighting in the studio a little like you play outside your gear look off because of the sun
other than the dvj's & the djm800 , what are the exact specifics of the setup that yoda is using ? & what wouold the total price be for the whole set up ?
He uses a Pioneer VSW-1 to mix the video. It's a two-channel video mixer, which can be hooked up to the DJM800 to work together with the crossfader for audio.
The 3D sequences were made in 3DSMAX9, I then 'cut' the sequence in PremiereProCS3 (realtime, so nice and fast for edit decisions) and imported this into AfterEffectsCS3 for the layering/screens/treatment etc.
The video was shot using a simple black cloth using two static Sony HDV Z1 cameras. I only had two weeks to make the video from shoot to product launch so it was a tight schedule. Yoda also uses section of the video in his live show.
Yoda is using Pioneer DVJ1000 turntables, these play DVD discs (you can see the source DVD material on the A & B screens, he's then mixing the DVDs into the Output.
It's tricky as you're juggling both the music and visual performance.
Yoda's using 2XPioneer DVJ1000's that play DVDs. Although the sequence is studio shot and edited with effects - what you're seeing on the screens (2Xsource decks and final output)really is the realtime mix we recorded on the day
DJ Shadows 'Entroducing'is one of my favourite albums, his 'In Tune On Time' live DVD is also excellent (although he's not mixing the visuals himself, whereas Yoda does). I'd recommend you check out a Yoda gig if you get the chance. In my opinion, Yoda's music incorporates a fun and very English sense of humour, he's also very true to his hip-hop roots. I enjoy both artists music, the more creative people producing quality tracks the better.
Amazing, the pioneer guys came to my studio and tried to demo the capabilities of those DVDJ's and they crashed and burned compared to this, you should talk to pioneer and get an endorsement
Yoda won I.T.F.? Is the footage available to watch? The I.T.F. battle is too underground. Finding out information about it is almost impossible, at least in England anyway. Do they still have a website?
I guess it looks like it's off because it's a little dark. Although I've edited the sequence using various angles, everything that you see was recorded 'Live'.
Yoda used the DJM800 to mix between the DVJ1000s and also control the vision mixer via midi channels. What you see on the screens is the actual output from the A&B decks and the Mixer.
if you think this is cool, check out the innovator of this dvj scratching .. do a search for dj j red. first dj in the world to juggle and cut on the dvjs.
Hi djsunited, Thanks for the link, DJ Red's live set is great, It's good to see the natural DJ progression from cutting breaks to visuals.
If anyone else has other DVJ video recommendations, please feel free to post them here.
It's worth pointing out that we had big issues with using copyrighted material for this promo - so it was decided to uses Yodas own video material made for his live show.
If you get chance, go see him live for the cult-movie & retro cut-ups. It's a great show.
Hi CleanCuts, thanks for the comment. The Syncing of the two cameras and three outputs was a big technical problem, that there are ten seperate shots - eg. You shoot from the back, rotate the whole set and then shoot from frontetc.
The filming took around 5 hours but it filled 22 hours worth of tape. I thought that I managed to edit the sync well but I'd be really intrested in knowing where in the timeline you think the images are out of sync.
if you are refereing to the loads of scratching that seems to happening when Yoda isn't scratching the DVJ's, it because most of that scratching and cutting up is on the original track.
Yoda is mixing Yoda tracks, so they already have tons of cuts and scratches in them already..
nice use of the 3 hot Que buttons though, when he does the drumming bit!
I know its "Oh Mcdonald had a farm" on 4:33, but who's it by and whats the name of it?? Please!!

The total price for the DVJ1000s, a DJM800 and VSW-1 is about $5700.
