this series was amzing!! i'm not a model guy but i'm going to attempt to make a fender for my truck this winter! thanks so much for such an awesome tutorial!
what i didnt understand... was why the two haves were layed up seperately , then the mold halves were secured together and then the seam gaps in the two new pieces were overlaid with one strip of cloth.... why not just bolt the mold together.... and.. then lay up the whole piece at once....certainly stronger at the seam
@SPmQQse Mostly likely because the fibreglass matting isnt very friendly on complex surfaces. If this mold was a semi circle for example, you wouldnt be able to bolt it together and proceed to fill it with cloth and resin.
If you had a dome shaped mold, you would be able to lay it in one go.
They are simply demonstrating the harder process of the two :)
@RapscallionStallion buy yourself a block of foam and cut it down with an electric carving knife when you get it to the shape you want start your glass work like shown in the vid you will just need to use a heavyer glass matt..
Fibreglass and the resins used must be treated with the greatest care as regards your health. Studies carried out on people who have worked with fibreglass have proved beyond doubt that exposure to Fibreglass particles causes cancer and many other serious healt problems. In fact Fibreglass some research has even said it is more dangerous than expousure to abestos. Dont fool around with your healt , find out the facts about the health risk involed with fibreglass,
There is a world of research carried iut as regards the health risk when exposed or working with fibreglass. Of course their is no doubt whatsoevr as regards the resins used and are quite dangerous . I think you shoud read up a little as regards how dangerous to your healt working with fibre glass is. I suggest you Google ( health risk of exposure to fibreglass particles).
you would never get your hands or the matting down in that tiny area.
sometimes 2 parts are necessary. I've had to make 3 part molds for very complex angle object. plus 2 part molds are required if the part wraps around inside of itself. you would never be able to get the part out of the mold otherwise.
Thanks for putting this fantastic tutorial on youtube. It was really easy to understand and well presented. Now i know where to begin and what to get for my project. Cheers
too much work, vacume forming would have been quicker.

My question would be how to create a wing - the shape is too deep to get into to seam or lay up as one?

that is not entirely correct... the danger lies in the resin, not the fibre glass

makoshark26 2 years ago
yeah very helpful videos.
I think I would make it a one piece mold though. stronger and faster.
but it's a good illustration in case the part couldn't be made in a single piece
