I love this film, I hate the fact that I haven't seen it sooner. I suppose it's not until you're older that you can appreciate a masterpiece like this.
One thing I love about this scene is the squire's pause from 1:28 - 1:30. Perhaps he didn't see anything, or perhaps he has seen something that made him feel uncomfortable, but that he can't completely explain. I love these subtle moments in Bergman's films.
@Wulffrith916 So it seems, which means Wulffrith's question still isn't answered. Why weren't the other two women mentioned or shown? You do you mean they DIDN'T die?
@PaladinHero I guess i meant to say that they did go with death as when they are doing the dance there is 6 ppl and 6 ppl when death arrives so all of them died. There no way to say the two women mentioned where not at the dance.
@PaladinHero Indeed. "I see them, Mia! I see them! Over there against the dark, stormy sky. They are all there. The smith and Lisa and the knight and Raval and Jons and Skat."
I'm a native Swedish speaker and let me tell you: these subtitles are atrocious. Not only do they many times translate wrongly, the text sometimes doesn't even make sense in English.
@Soulrivers I don't know any Swedish, so I can't speak for the translations, but as for the text not making sense in English, I will say that what is being read aloud comes from the Book of Revelations of the Bible, which many people, theologians even, have found extremely nonsensical and difficult to interpret. It's a very confusing and strangely structured piece of text.
So Death can be outwitted - for time enough, at least for one significant act - and the women are truly beautiful and isn't the Squire a ringer for Russel Crowe?! A truly wonderful film indeed
@jaycr2006 So people are allowed to do a crappy job at translating just because I don't have the time to learn every single foreign language? Flawless logic there, pal.
Frank Capra on villains in films : "The Sweden, being neutral, couldn't blame anybody. So they just threw away the plot and dared you to understand their films. The critics couldn't understand them either, so they called them "art"."
I don't know if he meant Bergman. I just saw the film and loved it, but Capra's got a point : this film looks like a stereotype of "serious" film. It is very good, but far from being the best film ever. Some made films just as good with a more modest style.
It don't think Capra meant Bergman - yes his films are artistic and can have several meanings, but it doesn't mean Bergman just had no one to blame therefore made whatever.
Also think of the time this film was made, you may have seen more modest styles and liked them better, but this came first. This set the bar for this style of film.
And hey who cares if someone thinks this is the best film ever? why care enough to disagree - dude just let them have their moment!
I must say, there some very beautiful actresses in this film. Particularly Jof's wife Mia and the silent girl who has that last line when facing Death.
When I watched this - 666 views. Some kind of sign? Probably not, preposterous darkness and everything!
Thanks for uploading! I've seen this film many times, but it never loses its impact. A fantastic ripose to all the bullshit that is pumped out under the guise of pop culture. Sincerely, a gem.
Seven is a significant number because, objectively, that is how many basic colors there are, including white light.

The Swedish language seems to have been particulary invented for
dim witted northern folk.
It has a certain slowness about it that's well suited
to blondes.

Why didn't the Silent girl go with death to the Danse Macabre? or Karin the Knight's wife?

@xaxie1 Because they died.

@Wulffrith916 The confusion is in the translation then, because they aren't mentioned by the guy (Jof?) who sees them.
