Just seen the video...what a shame.Ysed to holiday there in the 70's and 80's for 16 years with my parents brother and sisters.what a great time we had,had my first snog on the prom in one of those bus shelters. Also remember the lake behind, unable to remember the lakes name, but me and my mother wemt on those splash cat paddle boats they had also the mini go karting at the side, price was 12p for 4 laps, they were the best days of my life with very fond memories. Many thanks tony for the upload.
@jbondjnr It was called the Marine Lake.We used to go on the splash cats too,and the mini train going around the lake. We also loved the big high slide. they always It was always fun. We'd sometimes bring our friends too and they always had a good time too.
And to think i used to go on that fair every single year on my holidays. As a child in the early 80's it was a tradition for our family to go on the fair the last day of our hols.Us being kids, our dad would pay,we'd have a fab time. Oh, i also went on the fair in my teens, was great. Its ashame they couldn't have made improvements to it ,and the nearby area instead of knocking it down.
@wesleypresley1000 I have took my 3 year old to Rhyl 2 years running. We usually have lovely weather and we loved the kids fair and the days playing on the beach. Also some days we take a drive out to other places like the zoo in Colwym Bay or Llandudno. He wants a trip on an open top bus next time as well.
great post of a dying holiday resort...our council in s-o-t are just as bad..damn hopeless..went to blackpool bank holiday ...deserted...councils are full of ppl in it for cash..
Rhyls demise is a crying shame but many other British holiday resorts are suffering as well.Anybody noticing Blackpool having to advertise on tv for the first time?.Rhyl never moved forward when times were booming like Blackpool did.
What a shame. I grew up here from 1970 until 2004 and remember the fair the front the boating and skating area and also when the marine lake had a small fair. As kids and teenagers we spent all our summer money on the fair and worked summer jobs in the arcades. Great time. However, as I grew up the hotels turned into doss houses and were offered as housing for those coming out of prison. Sorry to say we allowed it ot happed and did nothing years back to stop it....
@gaynorwilliams1 I lived in Rhyl similar time 1973-1994, I agree with all you say , Rhyl was great back in 70s and 80s.I worked in arcades on fair [playland and golden goose] 1978-1982, brilliant times. You must remember the same things as me, before Rhyl declined into what it is today. I think I even remember your name from Rhyl High School. I mangaged to escape in 1994 due to a new job. I visit now once a year but am saddened on each revisit.
My memories of Rhyl pleasure beach date from the late 50's. It used to be split by a road, the rides I liked then where, The Wild Mouse, The River Caves, The Waltzer and best of all, The Rotor. Like the wall of death, you stood against the wall as it rotated and the floor dropped away leaving you stuck fast to the wall, it was great turning upside down etc. Thanks for bringing these memories back !
@hanghoodiescum I used to holiday there as a kid, it was a nice seaside resort. Recent odd trips there over the last 10 years has seen evidence of a shithole big drugs problems too. shame for the local people that have lived there all their life, that have had to put up with the scum that now reside there!!
To answer laurenj9110, this looks like a video of the last day of Rhyl Funfair, the guy in the jacket is Dave Skelley, the owner of the fair, a nice guy, I used to drink with hinm in the Schooner [gone as well], it looks like the mayor and 'Miss Rhyl' [not sure why she is there and she looks realy bored]. The Older guy is Magnus Pike, a mad scientist from the1970s, he is discussing the best way to blow up the Funfair.
Last nail in Rhyls coffin, gone along with the pier,Floral Hall, skating arena, Crazy Golf,Marine Lake amenities, Pavillion and just about everything else that attracted visitors. Now Rhyl is full of bums, criminals and Drug addicts
My 1st memories of Rhyl fair where when we moved up from London in 1978, I was 8 & my step dad Bob Gill he'd been appointed Manager of the fair. We moved up from London due to the closure of Battersea fun fair where he had been the manager too.
I remember the Jetstream well, it came upwith us from Battersea. I also remember the Cyclone (the old wooden rollercoaster), and the AstroGlide!
Bob was later managing director of the Metrim Rhyl Monorail, I still have an original woven patch and photos!
i'm just watching secret millionair and it's based in rhyl, i had no idea the fair had been removed. i'm in australia now and had such good memories of it.............such a shame x
What? They're removing it? But that place holds so many of my childhood memories! That's such a pity, really. I'm going to miss that place if it's down before I visit Rhyl again.
You've all got valid points. look at Llandudno though, comparatively thriving. Different sought of resort I suppose, but if Rhyl hadn't been used as a toilet for ner do wells that nowhere else wanted, I'm sure regenerating it as a tourist destination would have been possible.
Yep it sure would of the problem was they had time but no one came forward to do it up with a revamp and it cud of been yrs in that state so cant blame the council for snapping up the deal to invest it in other ways i suppose ?
yeh your right there is no point in having a fun fair (which to be honest wasn't up to scratch) sitting there not being used hardly when like u sed the council could invest in other ways if i'm not mistaken arnt they putting apartments up on that???
@IRI5HJ4CK The funfair was just the last straw, nobody came to Rhyl by 2007. They could not afford to keep it going. Smack heads are not interested in funfairs All the other amenities had already gone.
Pier..1972
Collosium..1974
Marine Lake Fair...1970s
Floral Hall ..1993
Prom blocked off by Hantzel [doomed] world 1990s
etc. etc.
The guest houses could only keep going by taking in DSS scum from Liverpool.
Rhyl died then. Who want to buy a luxury flat in Rhyl?
@IRI5HJ4CK Enjoy the old vids on youtube, that is all that is left of the old Rhyl. Too late to revive it now. They seem to be building luxury flats all over tthe prom. Who is going to buy one?. Another great idea by the morons who run Rhyl Council.
Remember these old vids...soon it will be all that is left!!!

i worked in the coconut shy in the 70's :-(
I watched all the Scouse druggies move in - draw their dole money and watch the town going down the pan.
Visited back a few years ago and everyone stared at me simply because I was spending money...

I lived in Rhyl 1973-1994 and saw the decline from a thriving holiday resort to a drug infested dosshole. Pat yourselves on the back Rhyl Council.
