I don't know the exact phrasing in his will, but I think it was more along the lines of representation: he didn't want a movie made based on his life, particularly one - and I'm postulating here - in which actors would portray him and his loved ones. He felt his life would be misinterpreted. In this instance, it's a short, silent clip of Astaire playing himself for the services of co-stars, so I don't think it really counts.
And to my knowledge, there is no Astaire documentary like there is for Gene Kelly (Anatomy of a Dancer), one that covers his entire lifetime from hometown to vaudeville to Broadway to Hollywood to death and legacy. There's Astaire & Rogers: Partners in Rhythm, but I haven't seen it and I think it only covers his RKO years.
@yellowsummerdress Look for a doc entitled, CHANGE PARTNERS AND DANCE. It's an incredibly comprehensive piece on Fred Astaire, covering his entire ouvre from his childhood in vaudeville, to the Broadway stage, to films and television.
@TricksterDa :-O I had no idea! Thanks, definitely must check that out. I read his autobiography, and if I remember correctly, he wrote it before his TV work... I think? Haha darn it, guess I gotta check it out again ;P

Note the way Fred tips his hat forwards. Now who do you think was influenced by that? ;-)

@peaceintheworld2007 M.J. of course. He and Fred Astaire are my two favorite male entertainers.
