I too am a 2 knife kind of guy. But, a large knife will do a small knife job, so if I had only one choice, Id go big. On my outtings, I usually have way more than two anyways so I can try out different things. I think it all boils down to personal preference and faith. You build faith based on how hard you use any knife and how it performs for the indiviual. I know a small knife can usually get the job done, but a lager knife always gets it done, for me anyways.
question are spring assisted army and navy knifes good to have wth you for camping?I;ve been told their not.But I have 4 different pocket knives(2 spring assets 2 regular)and i always have at least one on me at all times.but are they good in the woods?
the unfortunately discontinued mora 510, you can make one out of a 511 though. I am myself a mora convert, used to think they were crap until I sharpened and used one!
rope as a backup for firemaking? talk about ass backwards. you should really add a mini bic lighter somewhere, or you might end up frozen to a tree somewhere
The twine you have at the bottom. What I did on my Mora 2000 was pull bicycle tube (AKA Ranger Bands) over wrapped my twine around it then doubled the bicycle tube over and you have just water proofed the twine for making a tinder nest. I portaged through water etc. and it was completely submerged and stayed dry. You can cut it into rubber bands and they take fire nicely as well.
For every survival kit a knife is always first up on the list because it can help u get food and build shelter also some fire starter needs the back area of the knife to start a fire as I say again a knife is always first up on list if ur building a survival kit
Thanks for a great clip. This is a simple and functional set up that is affordable for anybody. Well done The only extra thing you might want to include is a little diamond fish hook sharpener they cost only a dollar or two and are only 3/4' wide by 2' long and will refresh an edge when needed.Tape it under your spare rope or out of the way inside your belt clip (yes inside) it will fit and not change the functioning of the clip.
What kind of rope do you have wrapped around the bottom, it resembles either bleached hemp, or possibly thin nylon?? I carry 550 myself, I just like to understand the choices and enjoy the opinions of others when it comes to gear.
lol, if i dropped my knife in the woods, when it would be kinda dark out, i wouldn't be able to find it XD It is a Zero Tolerance 0650ST automatic knife, and it is all black :P
@borderraven from your list I see that you may have your priorities a bit mixed up. Comfort is one of those things that you worry about after you have the whole "not dying" part taken care of. IMHO, food comes before health but only because I know a number of natural and folk remedies that work very well and work for most occasions. First aid fits in with health as far as I'm concerned. Direction, I believe is only necessary when either setting up a shelter or finding a new settlement area.
@darkcolmar I have heard a great deal of people talk of putting a microbevel on their blades, why is that? Does it take impact well? Is it sharp as a razor? What are the benefits and what are the drawbacks? And believe me, there are always drawbacks to anything man made, it's simply human error.
Very practical size..................these are good for the money you'll spend. Would never try to shave with it -lol-. But, it'll do the trick if need be and sharpened right. Simplicity.................
your knife had no saraded edge i like that cuz sometimes u gotta cut though bone when hunting or surviving and mabey branches or something but ya nice vid
serated blades are not ideal for survival use...because when the serations get dull they are almost imposible to sharpen without the proper sharpening tools..a regular edge knife can be resharpeded using many natural stones
all you need is one of those sharpeners that you put on the table. kinda like those cheap 3 dollar wall mart ones, with the stones in a v shape. then just run ur surrations through em
nice setup i have my bushman set up simular to this i was thinking of getting one of these knives because the bushman (although is nearly indestructabe) is a little too big for certain chores
That makes sense to an extent, but if someone is just going on a day hike, chances are they don't want to spend 100+ dollars on a fallkniven or a custom...
I've seen carbon steel moras as well as Stainless. we sell both at the camp I work at. Carbon holds a much better edge, though it can be harder to sharpen, but the old timers used to say carbon steel is the way to go.
Great Idea! I would used 550 para cord instead of the rope u have used. Also 550 cord comes in multi colors. Some of the inside cord of the 550 cord can be used for fiching and traps,so tape under the 550 cord a few hooks of different size's. But all in all thanks for the great knife idea. Hamm

dont carry a mora survival knife, there not even full tang.
SanitySource 3 years ago
The Mora 510 in this video is 3/4th tang. Not to mention they are very good quality, so a full tang is not necessary.

when i depend on something for survival i want more than just the necessary
SanitySource 3 years ago
That makes sense to an extent, but if someone is just going on a day hike, chances are they don't want to spend 100+ dollars on a fallkniven or a custom...
aguineapig 3 years ago
yeah yeah true, mora's are an excellent day trip knives. ive got a full tang wood carving mora. nice cheap light and good steel.
SanitySource 3 years ago
treu , but mora's are carbon steel , so the need a lil more maitnence then other knifes, so i woudlnt recomend them too much
MarchingBlueNGold 3 years ago
no your wrong most moras are stainless, and i believe carbon is a better blade steel for bushcrafting as long as your not in a very damp area.

I like to avoid carrying alot of gear on my neck because to tends to rattle round and snag on brush. I personally prefer pocket carry.
