Now, Sir and Ma'am are common terms of respect in the military, so I don't think he meant any intentional disrespect, but she was perfectly reasonably in asking to be addressed properly, just as the officer would have been, if she had not addressed him by his rank.

I think she should take that up with him on the back room in private not in court. Their opinions are never fleshed out, and strongly rooted in cliches and simple minded conclusions like "that's just stupid" or "who does that" or "i mean, she is a senator, she deserves respect". Why does being a senator inherently deserve respect? Those of us that have been in the service, know that the General was correct in referring to her as "Ma'am" as we were instructed/trained/had pounded into our minds that superior male officers are referred to as "Sir" and superior female officers are referred to as "Ma'am". You don't refer to their rank constantly. The General was not being disrespectful. She was not "cool"

These people should be in the military, then, they might get it. To make fun of the military shows disrepect. It is correct by any military personnel to call senior officer mam or sir, just like it is proper for any military personnel to call anybody in congress and white house administrators the same. The disrepect by this senator or any other person of high rank is outragious.

I The General was calling her ma'am as that is how you adress a female suprior in the milatary. A title like senator or rank would only be used if clarification was needed about who was being adressed. 1:28 your argument about what term male senators use for the other is irrelevant. the Genral is not a senator and would call a male senator sir.
