Actually if you spread your fingers wide it makes your wrist much thicker, this is often taught in basic self defense classes for cases where your wrists have been grabbed.

Swat uses zipties much more often. Swat zipties have 2 holes for both hands. you need a pin to get out and still good luck doing it with your hands behind your back

and secondly the zip ties cops use arent those regular ones, and if ur already getting cuffed, chances are you arent getting away

Practiced that method in the past but have never seen it being taught before. It also works with cord or rope to a limited extent.
