Sometimes I act like I know what I'm talking about and act like a wildlife specialist and condemn hunters and fishermen, when really I'm just an angsty teenager or college student because I think they're absolutely evil. <--- Basically half of these comments.
I support fishing, but I don't support treating marine animals with cruelty. How cruel. Yes, people catch Octopi all the time. They don't treat them like that. How about putting it in a bucket of sea water and gently putting it back in the ocean!
I read the video info and it appears that in your area you catch octopi on rod and reel only infrequently. Do you fish a lot? I'm not exactly an avid fisherman but have seen several octopi taken with standard bait and line and have caught one myself. They certainly wont make the majority of my catch, but it is common enough that I don't think it's a big deal. Perhaps my local octopus species are more likely to strike at a bait? I live near sydney, Australia.
I would like to point this out in case anyone else isn't aware:
The cells of an octopus reproduce. So if it loses a tentacle, it will grow back, much like starfish and the iguana's tail. So yes, while this may have hurt it a little, I'm sure it will be perfectly fine. And please stop your complaining. This was obviously an accidental catch. Be thankful they were kind enough to put it back in the ocean.
@Iawyn And I believe most fishing regulators allow you to keep angled octopi as long as it complies with local limits on size, gender, and number caught (like any other thing fished out of the water). Odds are I'm right.
@Wikigoogtube It's quite possible you're right as well. I'm not a fisherman, so I don't know 100% on what the laws are for catching anything down there. I'm also from Canada, and our laws are different.
He wasn't being cruel to thing, he was trying get some plyers. If he tried to unhook it with his hand, all 8 of the octopus arms would attack his arm. Then he put it back in water so it could live and still trying get out his plyers. You all are ignorant.
Today, the hunter fails to realize that you must respect and recognize the death of another creature. You kill it to nourish yourself, you don't poke and prod it until it suffocates. So, you accidentally caught an octopus, Step One: release it immediately. Treat others how you would like to be treated.

So the Japanese and people in African tribes who survive b either fishing or killing cattle should all starve?
Japan has little farmland, and much of their diet is fish as a result.
Now lets look at africa, little water, even less arable land. The massai(sp?) survive by raising cattle, they have also been known to drink the cows blood to avoid dying of thirst, a very real possibility there.
So should all these people be driven to poverty/starvation because you are squeamish?
