I don't give a crap about what people say, I liked this movie! I felt it was hell of a lot better than the japanese ones, and the monster is just simply awesome, which is why this version will always be my personal favorite movie monster ever.
Too bad Sony didn't live up to their promise and deliver a good faithful Godzilla movie. Instead we got a movie that was more of a remake to the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
I liked the zilla movie haha I thought it was enjoyable. Not as good as Godzilla but enjoyable. Godzilla 2000 really spat in Zilla's face though haha.
@GoVNO1998 The folks at Toho used plaster and plywood, sculpted up to close to (I'm estimating) maybe 11 foot per building. Plaster and plywood (among other things), by the way, were the same materials used to make the exploding buildings in Independence Day. The suits were a few hundred pounds of latex and were robotically assisted, ROBOTICALLY ASSISTED SUITS!!!!! You're perfectly welcome to hate the Toho movies, that's your opinion, but do some research before you make your claims, okay?
From what we can learn from this is it is our first time as Americans seeing Godzilla. It is not the original but a modern version. We know he isn't the original, he's a modern version. And as for the name, he's known as Zilla instead. But we still call him Godzilla cuz' he's our Godzilla and the first we encounter that has the same roar as the original. Who cares about size? Zilla's my fav. They planned a sequel? I want to see it! Ah well, we got the series where Zilla Jr. is in. watch it!
Actually the first time Americans saw "Godzilla" was in 1956. America named the "thing" from Japan "Godzilla" and Toho Co. Ltd. stole the name in 1962. The name "Zilla" for the '98 Godzilla is a Japanese way of trying to take the "Go" (the respect for a God) away from the American version. Well, I have news for the Japanese.......the beast in New York is a God and the Japanese Godzilla is a downer.
Because those that are critical of the 1998 US version of Godzilla, the actual name, do not have juris doctorates, or studied law to get one, and therefore their premise is incorrect which results in conceived, distorted opinions. Make note these opinions are American opinions. God forbid they were Japanese opinions without the right for a rebuttal. Thanks.
@Johny2662 i love zilla too!!!! and there was suposse to be a sequel to the 1998 flim, but due to the neg. feedback they didnt do it. thas why godzilla the series came out to where we meet zilla jr
@seanteezzyy123 Yeah and you know, that series was a better idea since cartoons are ageless and less expensive and the son is born and fights all monsters like it is traditional. If only there would be movie series based on the cartoon.
@Johny2662 i agree 200 percent with you, Godzilla(zilla jr). is every bit of the old godzilla the only different is he dont look like him, and their creature name was gojira the Amercains called the creature Godzilla toyko ppl stole the name for themselves, so they can not change our godzilla name
dont you get it? dean delvin just explained the movie. they didn't want to be disrespectful by fucking up the old godzilla by making a new one. besides, does the fucking name have any thing to do with the quality of a movie?i mean come on, and the dialog was not cheseier than the old ones, i mean in one godzilla movie they said he had 2 brains. wtf? besides, there was supposed to be 2 sequels. maybe the godzilla in the sequels would come back more powerful and have fire breath and fight monsters
I agree with you otherwise. Tristar did exactly what they were supposed to do--remake the character for a Western audience. Their representation fit cultural trends. Financially, they did the right thing.
Toho screwed up by attempting to continue milking the old franchise--none of the Milennium films made any significant returns. Other daikaiju films, such as Gamera and Monster X have also been big flops in Japan. But the US is getting into the act with "Transformers" and "Cloverfield."
It's a decent ''Monster movie'' but a Shit ''Godzilla movie'' the dialog was cheesier then the early japanese films.
With 130$ million budget you mean to tell me we couldnt have gotten better material?
Godzilla isnt meant to be realisitic, They changed him to much. If half of hollywoods films were ''realistic'' we wouldnt have half the shit out now-a-days.
Why they did it to Godzilla is beyond me.
Keep the japanese Godzilla image or else leave Godzilla to the Japanese. I love godzilla tho
What's more important was the amount of time the TriStar producers took to get the rights to just use the "name" Godzilla, no matter what the creature looked like, or how good (or bad) the script was. The CNBC article after the trailer is a very important lesson. LOL
Zilla was supposed to fight another monster at New York but Toho didn't like it, Toho offered Mothra and King Ghidorah to be Zilla's opponent but they refused both for budget problems or something like that.
Not true. Once the rights to use Godzilla for Godzilla 1998 were obtained, the script was mutually exclusive. No rights were obtained to use any other character owned by Toho. However, you are correct in the fact, G'98 had four (4) script writers and practically two (2) separate stories, from the big lizard, to all of a sudden a bundle of clones of the lizard.
zeah as much as i like the old japan godzilla movies,when I saw this as a kidit was cool as heck and it still isn't that bad,hank Azaria and Matthew broderick are great as usual in here,still a good movie too!
I liked the movie,but uh, they went too far changing his shape so much. they may had been better off calling it something else. it didnt live up to the might Godzilla represents.
In my opinion, I think Godzilla that Roland Emmerich made is just dumb fun. I like it because it is just stupid fun. I agree though that the Japanese films are better.
hmm..... Cubs won.

The problem this movie had, was that it set it's expectations way to high to achieve. The movie isn't bad, I'd watch it on a rainy day.

@SpidermanPro
No, The problem is that they called it ''Godzilla'' an it wast that what killed the entire movie with Critic's an fans.
The changed his entire design, Took away his Iconic Roar, his atomic breath, invincibility, an he had no rival to fight.
As a stand alone movie as u said it is ''alright at best'' as a Godzilla movie it blows worse then Jaws 3 an 4.
I hope in the ''American Reboot of Godzilla'' coming from Legendary Pictures will deliever what this movie should have been

@seanteezzyy123
I have seen ''Godzilla: The Series'' while it is loads times better then the film it still isn't Godzilla.
They changed the design way to much an the attitude an spirit of the Original Godzilla are still missing.
No doubt the series are entertaining, but Godzilla is a giant behemoth, unstoppable by any know weapon, Deep Roar, up-right figure, n invincible.
I will always see this creature as ''Zilla'' I hope the American Reboot by Legendary does him justice coming in 2014
