@90sHoldover Thanks for watching. Definitely give it a try, I always say that if I can do it, ANYBODY can! I have ZERO gymnastic experience and ZERO dance ability. I'm not really any good at it, but it's lots of fun trying!
Joel - you do have tenacity! There were a few times I went ouch there for you....... I hope you do nail this move soon......I know you will. You work at them till you do - and you always get so much help too :)
Thanks....that Athena drop was way beyond me....but I had fun tryiing it. This month, I am still working at the Cupid...and starting back on the split grip Aysha again...
Hey Joel, I love your videos : ) never tried a hip hold from a cruicifix, but doing a standard hip hold I find if I try and pull up with my stomach towards my legs it helps me stick better. You're doing great, keep up the good work : )
hey there.i wasnt familiar with the athena drop until i saw ur vid and from what im gathering by watching you that it is an inverted crucifix to a hip hold right? will have to try it out. your spins are looking great and whoa! your caterpillar climb has improved ten fold! i love the pina colada song it is off the hook :) awesome job and that athena drop will click for you.
I had never seen that move before either--MICHQUAHYOGA (Voelle) did it on a video a few weeks ago. You probably need a little more height than I have in the basement to do it right. I think it's harder than the Gemini way of doing it--which I am going to try tonight instead--to see if I can do it that way instead...
LOL, was I cussing? I try to edit out the naught words...but the "S" word does occaisonally get quite a workout in the pole room! Oh yeah, that song is super corny...but it's got a good beat and easy to sing. I would always say to Laurie, "what's up with that chick, why doesn't she kick her boyfriend's butt for being a cheat? And Laurie would say, "..uhh, because SHE was looking for a new BOYFRIEND in the newspaper, too--don't you get it?" I guess I was never too smart in the romance department
WOW What a difference a year makes! I remember leaving you a *Happy Birthday* message last year from my old desk, seems like a lifetime ago!
You've added a host of moves to your repertoire since then, looks great! AND, you'll get that drop too when your back and hamstrings bend a bit more... Have a great half century year!!!
Thank You! That practice was from a week ago...the first back on the pole after the flu. I was going to junk the files, but then I noticed I got close a few times. I think I probably got ahead of myself...so I will try it from the gemini next time--I think the body is already set-up better from that position. The dance portion was fromyesterday's practice. I never got the Cupid a single time--but came close. I'll post eventually if I get the move...
The Hip Hold stuff was from last week...I was still getting over the flu. That move was probably a little bit too hard--at least going about it the way I was trying. MIssing you!
Thanks, Jessie. Well, the Athena Drop is a little too hard for me right now. Even if I DID get it, I'd need more room! I'm going to try the hip hold the normal way next time--maybe from the gemini...
omg, i love the pina colada song, not heard it in absolutely ages, i found myself singing along to it !! i really liked your front chair spin to back chair spin, cool :-) great routine joel, i need to do one now . xxx
Thanks for the tip...I do think this was not a good way for a beginner to try out this move...but I kind of liked Voelle's take on it. Basically it's all Universal and all of SONY BMG. I typed out about 100 of the sub labels a year ago on one of the forums. Wiikipedia had a nice list of the Universal and the Sony labels, then some one edited it away!! The list of Universal lables runs to SEVEN pages, lol...Sony is about two pages. I'll PM you the major groups.
Hi Joel, I love your persistance, your an inspiration to the rest of us who are trying to learn. I'd also love to see a list of YouTube acceptable music, or how to find one. I put up my first vid last week...and of coarse, they muted it. Anyway, thanks for posting your practice. :)
I had some kind of bronchitis after the cold or flu...or whatever it was. It's SLOWLY getting better, but everybody here in Chicago sounds like they are coughing up a lung. Take care of yourself, rest, and get plenty of fluids!
Joel, I gotta say you have great persistance...I try something 4-5 max. If I get frustrated I move on and then retry it again during the next practice!..LOL I would love to see what you could do if you weren't so confined by space?!?!?!?!
Thank You! This video footage was headed straight for the recycle bin this morning, but then I saw I got KIND OF close to something like a hip hold, lol! The set-up from the crucifix is just too hard for a beginner, I'll try it the basic way from a gemini invert or a leg switch next time. Yes, the space problem is starting to really upset me. I need a higher ceiling, then I would get a real pole and not a hardware plumbing pipe, LOL!
In your hip hold, the pole is too far down your legs, almost between the knees you can't get a good grip when it's down that low. It does hurt at first though so I can undertsand your reticence (sp?) to the thigh burn! In your warmup, watch that your top arm's shoulder isn't hiked up to your ear, engage those lats even when just walking around the pole.
Thanks Fleur...yes, this was kind of a failed practice from a week ago (the hip hold portion). I saw Voelle's vid and got kind of excited about it--but in retrospect I think one of the already tipped back inverts (Scorio? Gemini?) would be a better set-up to start with. I was going to dump the footage, but decided to post it when I saw I got close towards the end. I will take your advice to heart when I come back to this move. Part II was from this morning...I had spent a few hours (cont'd)
sifting through Jamilla's DVD's when I saw the Cupid and the Princess (or "Mariner" for men, lol!). I thought I might be able to do the Cupid. Jamilla teaches it from a knee hook invert method--not the side climb. I spent 2 hours on it. No luck at all. I'm going to stay with these two moves (hip hold and Cupid) until I can make something happen! The Pina Colada Song was the warm-up before the Cupid practice. Not sure I'll post ANY of that. It was pretty horrible!
Thanks, Alex. I think I need to learn the hip hold the traditional way...from Gem or Scorpio...for now. But I liked Voelle's video and wanted to see if I could imitate what she was doing. I wasn't quite ready yet, LOL! Glad you enjoyed the dance...that was really just for fun more than anything...
so cool watching an old man do this...i always wanted to try, looks fun

fab vis as always joel.
one tip for the hip hold, keep your head and shoulders back/down :)
otherwise your legs go back too and then your not balanced
trying it from a gemini is prob a very good idea
how do you find out if the music you want to use is a youtube partner? Is there a list somewhere?
xx
