How it goes is that, when they were making the NOES movies, this evil entity got trapped in the movies as Freddy, and remained trapped until they stopped making the movies. (Which gave him the chance to break free into the real world.) All the stuff we saw Freddy do in the movies was being done by *this* entity. And after being trapped in the movies for so long *being* Freddy, the being eventually truly *became* Freddy.
