Hey!! I just wanted to say THANKS SO MUCH for this video!! I gave my 4 month his first haircut today using your tips and he looks ADORABLE!!! Your video was the most helpful i'v found! KUDOS!! (and by the way your dogs are absolutley precious!!)
@laverdadduele1 my dog is the same way. What I do is instead of doing it on a table I sit on the floor with him he just feels more comfortable keep talking to him letting him know he's/she's a good boy/girl keep treats nearby and try to do it regularly it will be tough the first time but the more you do it the more "normal" it will become. Either way your dog prefers a million times that you do it, than some stranger at a store not to mention the price!!
@lilo111105 Thank you for your input. At this point I'll try just about anything short of sedation, lol. I'm the dog's second owner so maybe a little patience and time... If you read my other reply you'll understand my situation better.
I would love to be able to save on grooming bills and do some of it myself but, how in the world did you manage to train your Shih Tzu to just sit there while you clip away?? Mine wants NO part of any scissoring near its face. And those looping nails that MUST be trimmed - are you kidding? She will squeal and bite if I mess anywhere around those paws. An otherwise sweet and loving great little dog, other than bathing and daily brushing, she just won't let me do much else. Suggestions? ty
@Laverdadduele1 My dog has been groomed monthly since he was a puppy. My groomer says he just sleeps while she's doing him. SHe uses a dremel tool with a grinding stone to do the nails. I have bought my own and do all my dogs now. It works so much better than clipping. OUr vet office had her show them how she does it. It's important to take them to the groomer monthly even if they don't need it to keep them used to it.
@TheSleverton Thank you for your reply. I'll elaborate a bit on my 'Tzu, Betty Boop. She was my recently deceased mother's dog for 11 years which I'm now caring for. She was regularly groomed and I have continued taking her in tho probably not quite as regularly ( about once every 2-3 months ) She also has yeast-related skin itching-biting problems which I have addressed with vet visits, treatments, special shampoos, grain free diet - Wellness feed ), the works.
@TheSleverton Like I said, I love this dog but I'm finding out this is not a breed for dog owners on a budget. As much as it saddens me, I'm considering an offer from a lady friend to take her.
WHY WOULD I SHAVE A SHIH TZU? I BUY A DOG WEITH HAIR BECAUSE I LIKE THE HAIR NOW IF I AM A DISABLED PERSON WHO CAN NOT HOLD A COMB IN MY HAIND I COULD UNDERSTAND AND SO I ALSO UNDERSTAND WHY THE DOG CLOSES HIS EYES I WOULD NOT WANT TO LOOK AT HER DESTROYING ALL THAT BEAUTY
@LAJARIFKA It grows back LOL. When my female shihtzu comes into season I wil trim her down it's less messy and she's more comfortable (doesn't need bathing more than once a week)& then let it all grow back. Shaving a shih tzu doesn't ruin their coat what so ever so there's nothing wrong with them having a trim. *continue*
*continued* Although I do prefer my shihtzu in full coat, sometimes it's more fair on the dog to have them trimmed during season or sickness so they're not being bathed like 2-3 times a week, or if they're a nervous dog I'd imagine it'd be more fair for them to be trimmed and bathed less
Great video, Thanks! You have the MOST adorable dogs and the cutest cut.
Can I ask if you pluck the hair in their ears? My vet keeps telling me it should be done. Her ears are clean and she doesn't seem bothered at all. Just wondering what's right, as she's still really young (5 mos.)
@jblackcsr You're vet is correct. Hair left in the ears will cause either yeast or bacteria to grow and an infection, with very itchy and inflammed ears. The reason why ear plucking needs to be done so young, is so that your dog will get used to it, and to prevent ear infections. After awhile your dog won't care too much for it to be done if on a regular basis since there won't be so much hair to pluck out after the initial plucking. If not done, there will eventually be an ear nfection.
Hey I'm a dog groomer, and been grooming for 6 years, was a bather for 4 years before. I wasn't taught in a school, was taught on the job. I think you did a great job for an @ home groom! I see another groomer commented on not using a #10 on the body. You can use whatever you want! We groom schnauzers with a #10. I will give a couple of tips that will save a little time. On the bridge of the nose you can use your #10 (as long as it's cooled down & safer) and a #40 on pads! Good luck & good job!
He so cute love the cut . I gave a question today is my first time trying to groom my Shit Tzu . She needs a bath . Do I need to take her a bath before or after I shave her ?
Nice job. Very cut hair cut. when creating the round face on your dog all you had to do if lift both his ears and hold them together. then cut around the face. Just a tip.
i have a toy poodle with alot of mats and i was wondering that if i use a 1/16 comb to cut her hair that itll cut all her mats off completely??? i have a clipper but when i dont have a comb on it it cuts all her hair and just shows the pink skin. will a 1/16 comb leave really short hair? what size is a num 10 blade in inches?
@tchavez1996 a #10 is like 1.5 MM it is the blade that is used to do the belly, privates and bridge of nose. Go to petsmart and get a #7 or a #5 blade. Make sure the blades say #7FC or #5FC. Hope this helps!
I'm getting ready to try my hand at home grooming, and this video was REALLY helpful! More thorough than others I've found. It's a really cute cut!
I have two older dogs who are not used to being groomed, so I anticipate quite a struggle, but with South Texas heat, it's a must for these fluffy dogs! If you have a young dog, START NOW getting them used to regular grooming, and it will make it a better experience for everyone. Obviously, MooShoo above is very accustomed to it! Good Luck everyone!
Appreciate this helpful video. Grooming has become an expensive extra. Going to try this wknd. This cut is "better" than the one we pay for at the salon. This is a beautiful haircut for this type of dog. We are in Texas and to have a Shih Tzu long haired all year round just doesnt seem fair. Thank u so much u have changed our lives! ;)
Thanks for the video, really really useful. Tomorrow i will start my own "trial & error" experience with my mom's shih tzu. Beautiful dogs. My best wishes for all of you. God bless.
this is the 2nd video ment for me but using a black dog, can someone do one with a white dog or a color where i dont have to focus to see the job being done? but well done regardless
I love how u do the triangle on the neck behind the ears. My girls 'sport' this same "do" and I am going to show ur video to my groomer, because I like ur finished look! My girls go every week to the groomer, wish I could do this...... BTW: (what a good baby u are grooming, so calm & still ;)
Thanks for this video and you have adorable dogs. :)

The lady with mat problem. You can take thinning shears and give it a few cuts and then comb through. If that doesn't work you can use a mat rack.
