Good to see people who still know how to do it right.
Just came from a video where people were walking along the highway miles from nowhere with traffic doing 100km/h. Gotta be on a corner where you can be seen, and the cars are going slow enough to think and pull over.
Hitching is amazing. I've spent a lot of time hitching, and even when it goes really really slow [camping on the side of the highway without getting a ride for two and a half days] it's an amazing experience.
Amen! Christian Hitchhiker here as well! Have hitchhiked Mexico, 3 provinces in Canada, and 31 states in the USA. So many great people, and so many answered prayers
@kkaaww333 you hitchhiked mexico!? when? cause im from mexico and i want to hitchhike all the way from mexico to alaska but times are hard now, there's so much violence
I've hitchhiked, and I've met a great number of wonderful people on the road :) Just have faith in God, and the most wonderful things happen! I love to hitchhike whenever I can :D Thumbin' it on that ramp!
if u would be interested, just look on my channel or channel of Leo carona.
So for example telling me that u will get killed hitching in Brazil seems to me rediculous,as I made more than 50 000km over there pure hitchhiking and I never had bigger trouble. And I met smuggelers, murderers, rapists etc. It just depands on your personality trained out by years and being enough of the psichologue, knowing the culture and language ;)
U can hitch anywhere in the world and for free in general and all around the world. So if someone is telling me I dont have money so I cant travel, its rediculous for me to say. Its just u are too scared to go anywhere or u need to be treated like in barbie land, thats all. And then is just your problem.
With one friend we use to do the manuals how to get out from big cities and where to hitch. I am mostly making videos of that and as well of the beaches and things u can see in different places.
Hey guys,260miles per day is ver little :D truly. I make normaly when I am hitching like 1200km per day going very slow. Last time I did Barcelona my hometown in Slovakia in one and half day - its 2000km and something.
Yeah, hitchhiking is definitely the cheapest way,but every country needs u to know the culture to know the customs and at least the basics of the language. I hitched to south america as well - with boats. Thats not a big fun I can tell u. Its very tough, but managed.
well, it didn't used to be possible for someone to prevent a hitchhiker from ditching if the driver starts doing something bad... On a horse, in a horse drawn carriage, in old fashioned cars, if there was a lock, it had to be operated by the person next to the door the lock is on. These days, you have electronic locks that can be disabled by the driver to keep kids from messing with them; also prevents adults from escaping a nutcase.
That's why I think there's been a decline in hitchhiking.
I've hitched in France, Switzerland and Ireland... great times, met some great people and the only bad experience was when 4 of us split into two couples. The others got a ride with hot drinks in a motorhome while me and the girl I was with got NOTHING. Ended up on a train and not happy about it.
Never done it in England though. I don't know WHY it feels different here, but it does.
I used to hitchhike all over the USA back in the late 1970's and early 1980's.It was great overall. Most of the people that gave me rides were real friendly and most were envious of the freedom I had.
I've hitchhiked across Australian and New Zealand. Not only did I meet some of the most interesting people and make friendships that have lasted to this day, but I saw the countries for dirt cheap. I love Hitchhiking and I really hope it makes a comeback in North America.
hitchhiked at least 30.000km on three different continents and have a hard time recommending some more than that. you learn a lot from the people if you listen to them. DO IT!!!
I am 18 and female. I would love to just drop everything and hitch my way around the country, but I feel like I would be totally vulnerable, especially as a girl.
I just came back from a hitchhiking trip around Europe. From Norway, sweeden, denmark, germany, netherlands, belgium, france, spain, italy, slovenia, back to france, england and ireland where i took the plane back to Norway.
all in all the trip took about 2 months, started with no money, just my bag and me.
This was so amazing, and im going again next summer, just further down south east!
I hit the road in 1971 and hitch-hiked from Michigan to California. Then afterwards I hitch-hiked across America about a dozen times from the early to late 70's. Best experience of my life. I been to every state in the Union and Canada - Mexico. I'm 64 yrs old and retired and I would love to Walk Across America. Maybe I will.
I want to hitchhike, badly. ive been dating this girl who lives 3 states away for a year and i havent seen her in months.. im deciding what to do. someone pm me for tips on hitchhiking at my age (15)
I am gonna try to get from Southern Canada to Southern California... wonder if it's possible xD Thanks for posting this tho! Gives me some hope at least..
last summer i hitched from Sacramento ,CA to New york city,NY and it was great, but it did take a long time and i did spend nights at truck stops and camping on the side of the freeway and in the woods near the freeways but that is half the fun of it, i will hitchhike til i am 2 old to do so cause its a freedom that most have never truly had the chance to par take in and its just fun and its the freedom of the road that is so addicting to me..see you on the open road...peace
do u know why few people HHing? cause no1 driver want problems in his own car...u dont know what kind of person is the unknown guy with the hand up... :\
check our 23 minute film about hitchhiking, english subtitles!all for charity!we worked hard to make it the best hitchhiking movie in the internet!the decision if its true is up to you!=)

It's still possible even though you don't see many fellow hitchhikers (from experience in Norway), but it is a shame many have negative beliefs towards hitchhiking. I'm doing my own HH project atm, so it was great to see this vid you guys made!
My girlfriends and I hitched through the alps this year. because te locals no there is no public transport it was easy. First person to see my thumb always pcked us up. in one day we were picked up by, a young guy, a middle aged guy, an old couple. and nearly a teenage girl (but she wa going the wrong way). I would recomend it. our week holiday cost less than €150 for both of us. thats travel to destination, food, acomadation and maps.
I started hitchhiking at 13 in Israel, where it is relatively easy. Europe was harder, but nothing compares to trying to hitch a ride here in America, you can feel that you're hated and looked down upon here. It can take 2 or 3 days to get what would only take 6-8 hours by driving.
im going to thailand in december for a holiday and don't have much money right now... I live in Melbourne, Australia at the moment. Flights to Bangkok are about half price from Western Australia as opposed to Melbourne, and i've always wanted to have a massive adventure and head west..... Would be a massive trip though and would have take about a week i think... I'll sleep on it
Here in Russia hitch-hiking is rather popular among people between 15 and 30. Maybe that's because I'm in, but i used to meet friends on the road thousands kilometers away from home. It's kind of subculture: endless travels, meetings outdoor, communities on the internet, books and even guides, people asking for host, and people giving away places to sleep... Smiles. So many miracles on the Road!
A lost art? I've Hitchiked cross country (U.S.A.) and back, as well as up and down the top and bottem. Htichiking is still vary possible, as you concluded, anywhere in the world. Hitchiking may be less prevolent, due to fear from a news battered society, but it is still very popular. If you want to hit the road, all you need is a sleeping bag and patience. And when the waits get long, remember the golden "Rule of Thumb" - Eventually, someone will pick you up. It only takes one.
I have never hitchhiked before. In truth ive been a little paranoid about safety. Right now though im short on money and would like to get to London (which is about 400 km from where I live). Im still in two minds because ive seen mixed messages coming from various sources, but I would like to try it at least once. Any advise please from experienced hikers?
About the hitchhiking... Just go for it man. I've done it loads of time, and the safety paranoia surrounding hitchhiking is just an unwanted and overrated nuisance.
Well, this comes from a man of course... I can understand that as a girl (don't know what sex you are) you have the occasional freak that takes you along... But asides from that, I do it loads, so do some of my friends, I've even hitchhiked to other countries (see my oldest video, although it's in my own language)...
Not at all... Well, I of course always say 'thank you'... And the main reason people take hitchhikers along with them is not because they feel sorry for the hitchhiker, but because they're driving alone and wouldn't mind some company. So you do always have to be social, and listen to their stories or tell your own stories... That way neither of you is bored and you'll both enjoy it more. I've even had drivers appreciate the talk so much they drop me off where I need to be, but they don't... :)
good video man! I did 2 months ago, Paris-Brucelas Brucelas-Amsterdam, Ams-Berlin. that was great, a real adventure, sometimes frustrating but eeverything ended well. one dutcch junkie guy kidnaped me for about 6 hours, into his anti-crack house but the rest was great...haha! thanks to the polish truck driver who gave me like a liter of vodka in Hannover!!! thanks bro!
Well done lads . . . . the questions at the end, these are my thoughts . . look at the amount of traffic on the roads in any film from the 60's and compare it to today, during the 80's car ownership came in everyones reach, so anyone hitching was seen as a bit wierd cos u could get a car on the road for under £200 and sort urself out. Thats wot i did, but it's not a lost art cos the road, an adventurous spirit and a thumb are all still available, as u have very well demonstrated . . !!
I always pick up a hitchhiker, whenever I see one. I used to hitchhike a lot in my younger days and always was glad to be picked up, so somehow I would like to return the favour.
An extremely well produced and thought provoking vid... I seldom see TV documentaries with such strong production value... well done lads... you've proved that humanity ain't as bad as the media would have us believe
gud video man, hitched solo from kerry(south of ireland) to dublin (about 400km) 2day for a bet. people should really hitchhike more its a brilliant experience
Do it man, I just came back from doing Toronto to BC and it was the experience of a lifetime. Stay out of Wawa, it's a black hole from what I hear, you'll need to walk to the next town if you get dropped there.
Serious? Good to hear. Got a couple questions for you if you don't mind. How long did it take and what did you bring? I've heard of people taking almost nothing but I might be doing some backpacking as well...
I hitch everywhere there is an art to it....make your self look acceptable if your wearing sun glasses take them off or people will think your stoned. I always carry a knife, have had some crazy lifts were i had had 2 use it.
Very good vid Olly. It is surprising how few hitchers you see on the roads these days. I think todays young uns have had parents who've wrongly been scared witless by the media.
I had many years terrific solo hitch-hiking in Europe. Best way to get to know a country is by meeting and talking to the people. It was always better to travel than to arrive.
I have gotten better rides when I was walking than when I just waited for someone to stop. Having a sign usually helped but just walking would get more lifts sometimes I would get let off and the driver had a CB and would tell others that I was cool and not a threat. If they see you getting out a car they feel safer picking you up knowing you are just looking for a ride. If a car is abandoned yo upass it walking they will stop and give you a lift to the next exit thinking you are the broke down.
I saw this video this summer and ended up going hitchhiking two days later. its still possible. i made it from Urbana, IL to Flagstaff, AZ. and took a bus home in the end because I had to make it back to school. anyway thanks for posting this video it was inspirational.
Awesome video. I take some hitchhikers with me. Here's a hint: wear a fluo jacket to start with, carton board of your destination, etc, give out some signals that you want to hitch proper.
most f you who liek hitchhiking must not be americans cuz its a well knon way serial killers murdered their prey!

I've heard of people taking almost nothing but I might be doing some backpacking as well...

good video, well made
I hitch everywhere there is an art to it....make your self look acceptable if your wearing sun glasses take them off or people will think your stoned.

This is great, I can't wait to hit the road again :)

Awesome video. I take some hitchhikers with me. Here's a hint: wear a fluo jacket to start with, carton board of your destination, etc, give out some signals that you want to hitch proper.
