  • A bit of sexist truth behind the lyrics.......but of course it goes both ways ;)

  • Wives can be lovers too. Men will be men.

too many women forget this. Love the lyrics, and shes beautiful.

  • This song is a bit sexist...if the guys going to leave her for that then who needs him? But I love her voice...just not the lyrics..

  • Wow- who is the bandleader- Nelson Riddle? Billy May? Gordon Jenkins?

  • @soapbxprod

That is the goodest question...... but nobody answer.

  • love/°)

  • hahahahahaha because the only thing men value in women are their looks hahaha

  • Love it!

  • Yep, dig those tune dad....what a voice what a major Doll!

  • Julie is fabulous!!!! Very underrated!! She couldn't sing Mary Had a Little Lamb without sounding sexy and sensual!

  • oh my god.. this voice is pure sex

  • ジュリー・ロンドンのバカラックナンバー“WIVES AND LOVERS"~ジャジーなジュリー、素敵なフォト #jazzm

  • great singer and great voice....

  • "Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers, you may not see him again". This line always makes me feel a little blue...

  • Love it. <3

  • Look at all your morons arguing about BS. Just enjoy the song for what it is.

London's voice is extraordinary! Very beautiful song!

  • SHE DIDN'T THINK SHE HAD MUCH OF S VOICE. LOL WHICH FEMALE SINGER WAS BETTER THAN SHE WAS?

  • Women also held men to a standard back then. A man had to be well dressed, if he didn't have husband potential, she wouldn't date him. Pre-maritial sex was uncommmon so if a guy didn't shape up, she moved on.

  • Love her voice, very sexy thank you for all of you posting them lot of song I never hear her sing before, she makes the song sexier

  • lol, i too feel like i need a cigarette...wait, i have one, this era was the best and kudos to my mom who knew 'good stuff' thanks for posting!

  • Hey, little girl

    Better wear something pretty,

something you'd wear to go to the city.

    And dim all the lights,

Pour the wine, start the music.

Time to get ready for love.

  • Listening to Julie is like comin in from the cold and having a hot drink..And thinking mmmmmm...

  • Hmmm... Have you ever wondered why 99.99% of women from this era were closet alcoholics

and valium heads? This song is the epitome of unrealistic standards set by Madison Ave.

By the time they hit their 50's they were old batty women.

  • Now lets

be realitisc here. This song is a marketing campaign of its day from Channel and

Max Factor etc. And stupid men (not all men) think women are trophy wives and treat them

like a dress up doll, and every one knows that men who played with "dolls" were laughed at and ridiculed so why aren't they now

  • @mizzjanky Maybe because women today, unlike the "valium heads" of 50 yrs ago, are even more willing to be "dolls"--after they've gone to work for 10 hours a day and left their kids in the care of an illiterate third world stranger, of course. None of the "valium heads" were answering to the name "bitch" or "ho", or wearing mules to the office and showing their tattooed back fat to the world, or making out with other women on the dance floor to get a man's attention, that's for sure.

  • This woman just oused sex appeal. A very classy looking lady. Stunning.

  • I wouldn't mind to be probed by space aliens IF they'd agree to leave me in the 50's...

    A woman with capital W!

  • Fantastic song! But there should be a sequel for us GUYS. Husbands should attempt to keep themselves attractive to their wives, too. It could go something like:

"Hey, little boy. Shave that beard. Take a shower! (You're really startin' to smell!) Into the bowl when you go use the toilet. Don't let it land on the floor!

    Etc., etc.

    :-D

  • @slmacph

    Hehehehehe. I love your post.

I´m a brazilian man and I´ll take this advice very seriously.

  • Dixie mcall from the 70s tv show emergency squad51 she was married to jack webb and also bobby troup from emergency.

  • awsome! how come ive never heard of her. she looks like jessica rabbit a little dont she?

  • @RaexoBlondie13 Sexist???? Get real....you ladies of today are just plain lazy and narcissistic! Relationships in marriage (that of being a wife and a lover) take work and a bunch of you wimpettes wonder why your husbands leave you for other women -- and men! With your attitude, your husband is definitely singing the song, "good riddance!"

  • @sandiegotrojandawg umm excuse me. men should love women for who they are. not a layer of makeup and fancy clothes. Really? im not married or even in a relationship. And i wouldnt want to be in one if i was expected to be perfect all the time. Good riddance to you honey. noone asked for your 2 cents.

  • una hermosura

  • cantar con poca voz pero saber hacerlo es un merito.sensualllllll vampiresca con suaves emociones ritmicas que se agradecen.

  • Her voice is very husky and sexy she was also very attractive.. and as I understand not a bad actress either. I will buy her CD she sings a lot of great standards.

  • Lovely! Heard it for the first time Mar/ 30 /2010, I was whistleing the tune and a mate said. " wasn't that from a film?" " Dunno! whatever happened to Jack Jones? is he still alive? I'll google him and the song" Found this she was great, love Dionne Warwick doing it too, Julie London was a major talent and so sexy, this song is so politically incorrect these days. One of Burt's best!

  • @1lordthorpe. Political correctness is a smoke screen to hide behind for those who can't face the trueth of things.

I understand that in Oz their are posters up saying "If you don't like it here *"#$ off somewhere else".

And good on yer cobber from UK.

  • @bbcisrubbish. Sorry about the spelling! Their should be there. Trueth should be truth.

  • @bbcisrubbish Never seen a sign like the one you describe. Sounds very Australian though, the Australians don't like whingers' I don't think such a notice would be considered politically incorrect. So long as the sign was in multi-languages like most public notices, one wouldn't want to pick on the pommies!

  • @1lordthorpe . Thanks for the message. I sence a good Oz sense of humour there.

As a pom I don't mind the Oz jokes about us, in fact I rather enjoy them.

The sign must be a rumour put about by some joker trying to cheer us all up.

An Oz friend told me pom is actually POHM, "prisoner on her majesty's service".

    Best wishes.

  • this song's a lot more risque with a female singing it. - anyways, gotta love julie london :)

  • I can't believe they got a gal to sing this song.

  • At the same time, it objectifies men as inherently unfaithful.

  • @unnamednewbie13 haha i don't find it so hard to believe a girl sings this! my mom STILL tells me exactly what this song is saying ("just because you have a boyfriend doesn't mean you stop trying, there are pretty girls everywhere!")

  • @mommyimhungry I still find it insulting to both sexes, catchy or not.

  • @unnamednewbie13 it is a bit =/

  • those office days are gone and not just offices compliment a woman todayand youll most likey have chargers pressed againt you instead of oyher things.harassments no good but things have gone too far, ever wonder why all these career gals complain they cant find a husband....julie is of course wonderful no matter what

    ou

  • i think girls need to fallow this rule. maybe we wouldn't have so many devoirces if the women tried a little more.

  • @merrydorrell You are right but it is also a two way street. For a relationship to work both side need to put in effort.

  • thanks dix mcall.rest in peace.

  • Great version of a great song!

  • oh yes never forget wives should allways be lovers too. run to his arm when he comes home to you

  • Ms. London was so underrated. YouTube gains her the audiences she deserved.

  • @frankstelt ..... I agree you've just right. She was a little underrated.

  • I adore Julie London's voice.

  • My Grandmother used to listen to this song, she had this dance to go along with it. Good Ol' memories

  • I wish I could use this song to brain wash my wife. All she does is nag me!

  • You sound like you need a Stepford wife..... asap ! :o)

  • @renerevuelta1 : Har har har. There is not many women like Julie London. So, please treasure what you have and be happy.

  • So right brother. Thats why us blokes die first !!!

They have the curse and childbirth but we have them to put up with !! LOL

  • i like both versions. thanks for this song!

  • i need a cigarette, a glass of wine and this song, my life feels complete :), What voice.

  • @pablobix1 i love her style. i wonder why her name didnt sound popular.

  • Respond to this video... this song should always be included in wedding receptions...good tip for wives :)

  • @miggygozun A woman college student said this is an antiwomans liberation song

  • @spacepatrolman - I don't care at all.

  • Oh Julie, you were a piece back in the day, weren't you!

  • a very sensual song which sounds better from Julie rather tan Jack Jones

  • I love this song, man! This is my favorite, I just love the tone she makes at certain instances.

  • Awesome version.

    smashing swing

    great voice.

    Luis

  • Wonderful!

  • 'Ahhhhhh Maaaaaan!!

Trust my mother to 'BORN ME' in the wrong time!!... (1967)

    I got shit like Gaga-Pixie-Pink-Avril Lavigne-Lily Allen-

And all the likes of these Telentless crap!

The 'REAL' talent only died in Physical form only, that's all.

It's a pity the named didn't learn from them!

  • how do you think I feel!

i was born 1994! i really can't stand music today...

  • Haha, that's the best use of the phrase "born me" I've ever seen. Love it mate. :-)

  • i have no idea why i love this song

  • I know. I feel I shouldn't, but I do.

  • this is good to the ears.

  • How come no one has ever made a clock of that Julie cover shot from The Best of Julie London, TIme for Love. Her legs going all the way around the dial.....

  • Exquisite vocals.

  • She's not being sarcastic, it's a serious song. Men wrote it in 1963, a time when women stayed home cleaned & cooked roasts, & smoked cigarettes while pregnant. Burt Baccarat & Hal David wrote it to be exact. I still love the song though...

  • This is when women were women and men loved it. (and women loved it) Reminds me of Mad Men.

Nowadays men settle for fu#k buddies.

  • IF they're lucky. "Run to his bank the moment his check hits the door"

Sometimes JUlie London had a pretty flat delivery, and so I rule that she does not do it for me with this version. Let's try Eddie Gorme.

  • I like the Dionne Warwick version...from the 60's that was later used in the movie "The First Wives Club" as the opening credits number.

  • sometimes she sounds like ms krall..she's prettier though..no offense ms krall..i just discovered ms london tonight..im mesmerized right now...no kidding...

  • I love this song...Julie London was beautiful

  • I realized, she might be completely sarcastic, or dead serious. It's tough to gauge when I know nothing about the character.

  • love it

  • This song would be perfect for a feminist rally.

  • Dear god man, you beat me to it! I was just thinking, "a proud day for feminism..."

Why do I get the feeling she isn't joking around?

  • Ha! I know what you mean. I told myself that things we're just different in them days and a young Julie London today would not touch this song with a barge pole.

  • I get the image of a bull dyke serenading Julie London.

  • What a fantastic combination. David / Bacharach with Julie London singing. It doesn't get much better than this!

  • Am I the only one who likes the Vic Damone and Steve Lawrence versions? I like Jack Jones, but I think Damone especially does a better job of it.

  • Preciosa... maravillosa !!!

  • JACKS X WIFE, WHAT A BABE

  • More famous as the wife of Bobby Troupe who starred with her on Emergency and wrote the song "Route 66" for Nat King Cole

  • Beautiful rendition of this song, very sexy & elegant...gotta love the style of dress, very thought provoking...

  • Is this the same Julie London who played the head nurse on "Emergency!" ? If I were a TV character in the 1970s, I would get sick/injured in a heartbeat just to wind up at her ward of the hospital! I was a character in the '70s, but never got to be on TV until the '90s. Boy, aren't some YouTube comments a complete waste of time? I guess I should get a life. And a wife. Nice song, "Wives And Lovers". Wouldn't be the same if Dr. Joe Early were to sing it. lol

  • this is a fantastic track... that hour glass figure is so so sexy..

  • Haha, my mom used to say that. Great song, great rendition.X:D

  • fans of this song need to invest in old blue eyes' album "It Might As Well Be Swing" with Count Basie and His Orchestra. Frankie's version will change your life. for real.

  • AGREED!

  • Definitely! It might have been a hit for Jack Jones but Frank Sinatra has the definitive version IMHO.

  • I encourage any new fan of Jack Jones to STAY his fan, and discover the rest of his catalogue, especially with Kapp Records in the 60s. Many of those albums are still unreleased on CD, but you wouldn't believe how exceptional, diverse and CLASSY they all are. It's a shame that so many people think that Wives and Lovers is a true representation of his music, which it is not. The strange thing, though, is that most feminists aim their anger at Jack instead of Hal David.

  • I had become a fan of Jack Jones a few months back after watching a film called 'Love With the Proper Stranger' and when I first heard this song I was kind of pissed... lol. When a woman sings it though, it does give a much different vibe, and thinking of songs like 'Wishin' and Hopin'', this isn't as bad. Of course, the two are Hal David/Bacharach tunes... strange hmm.

  • When a woman sings it, it sounds like a girl giving her girlfriend advice. When a man sings it, it sounds like he's being sexist. As a kid though, I loved it. I didn't understand what the lyrics meant. I just knew I loved Burt B and Hal D songs.

  • Coming from anyone, the message is a good one. Take it to heart. The whole world will be the better for it.

    Norm

  • We need to write one for men, too. Hey Mr. Man please clip your toenails....for husbands should always be lovers, too...run to her arms the moment she comes home to you...Hey Mr. Man better wear something sharp. Better learn how to flirt with your gal....don't forget the romance. Help with the diapers and dishes so your wife won't be to exhausted for love. Or disinterested. Lol.

  • Hey, Mr. Man pay attention to your woman. If you don't, there's a line of adoring men dying to stand in for youuuu. Don't treat her like she is unimportant. Don't spend your spare time with the boys at the office, your wife loves your company, too.

  • Precisely the message. After a fair share of false starts in this wounded era, I finally found a true lady, had the wiseom to recognize her value. She, for her part, had the wisdom to appreciate my effort and my sincerity. Life is good.

    Norm

  • A1 comment! X :D

  • She does a great job of making these lyrics credible, although on paper you can't imagine a woman singing them. Jack Jones' vocals were so perfect and smooth in the original recording (my favorite version), he made you forget how sexist the words really were. It was written as an "exploitation song" for a movie of the same name, but it wasn't in the film, and it wasn't the theme song. Reportedly this song made it into an episode of Mad Men just this past week. Great exposure for Jack & the era.

  • class is timeless,

    RIP Julie.

  • She's beautiful! My fav version of this one.

  • I like both the Jack Jones, Dionna Warwick, and Jullie London version.

There is also a uptempe disco version of this from Jack Jones, think that is my favorite. It on my channel if anyone wants to listen and give a comment.

  • love the lyrics. julie london's voice is very very sophisticated!

  • sweet.

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This music takes me back to the '60s, listening to this kind of music on the family Zenith stereo console which was part of the living room furniture. What a great time to grow up. If songs could have had a rating, perhaps this would've been rated "M" for mature audiences? Such a mature time. Grownups were actually grown up, or at least that generation wasn't as bombarded by all the marketing messages to hang on to their "youth". Sigh.

  • Austinala..... U R so right! Dead on it.... What insight!!! Have you seen Madmen on AMC? They capture the era perfectly..... so ultra-cool.... what an elegant snapshot of America in its finest decade......Such a shame this era will never be appreciated for what it was..... The music was rich. Complex chord structure. Listen to the built-in harmonic tension of the music behind the vocal...... God what an era.........

  • What happened to Mad-Men? We loved it, but there don't seem to be any more episodes--at least here in Boston it's off the cable.

  • Yes, this is a very intricate yet delicate song, one in which you can pick up new threads with each listening. The one thing I notice in her singing is her deep husky voice combined with a very light breath supporting her voice. Very intimate. Truly unique.

  • I've heard Jack Jones, Julie Lodon's and Dionne Warwicks and they are all good it's so hard to choose so I will have to go with Dionne's only because it was the first one i heard becuse my mom played the heck out of when i was a kid

  • Great.

  • this is brilliant and very true words!!

  • va-va-voom..... Julie London is the TRUTH!

  • Beaut song,

    What a babe!

    Thanx 4 posting 33zulu

  • I love this song. I wonder who sings it best though? I like this Julie London's voice though.

  • I love the Julie london version but the Jack Jones version is pretty memorable too...
