Prager makes a decent argument about believing, most of us atheist have no choice but to believe in anything but god, weather it's flat earth to natural evolution, or today's multiple universes, based on premature facts continuously being discovered and most recently to a point of unimaginable conception in QM and i bet far, far more mysterious in the future all the while having the ability to discover and understand all of this in the first place is peculiar but never superstitious or ignorant.
When I listen to Prager, I just feel sorry for him. This guy wasted his life in scientific ignorance. If he has read more science books than his religious propaganda, he would know better. It is a pity.
I disagree. I think that if you don’t believe in God, then that is a result of your skepticism. The result of you questioning things around you. And not just passively agreeing with or believing in anything that you’re told. Which in turn would make you more likely to not believe everything, especially something idiotic or illogical.
I really like Dennis Prager, but his arguments get really silly when he turns to religion. For example, the choice isn't whether everything came from nothing or not... if he's right, then either 1) god created himself, or 2) god existed forever.
I'll assume 2.
But if god existed forever, then how long did he wait until he made humans? Well... forever. Which means god sat around doing nothing for eternity before deciding to create the world. Rather silly, no?
Honestly.. I don't think I've ever heard such moronic dribble coming out of a person's mouth. I'm literally shocked at how stupid that little tirade was.
Wow, I’ve heard a lot of stupid arguments and tautology uttered by the religious and theocratic communities, but none come quite as close in comparison as what has just been insinuated here in this clip by Mr. Prager. What was this guy even thinking; he just spewed out all this, and didn’t even back any of it up? What gives?
At 6:20 Prager says "If I believe there is a god, I have to somehow deal with children with cancer...and every religious person acknowledges that difficulty --- or every thinking religious person".
Well there must not be very many thinking religious people because the only response I ever seem to get is "it's part of God's plan" followed by any and every attempt to change the subject.
Same drivel different day. Amazing the ppl like Pregger don't realize how stupid they look parroting the same old crap by projecting their misconceptions on others.
the point is, despite brilliant scientists, the human mind simply isn't capable of understanding the deeper mechanisms of the universe. To assume that we could, or should motivates us to probe and experiment leading to innovations leading to an improved quality of life. To assume that we KNOW however (goddidit) is dead stop self-delusion, a lifetime spent in highly distracting confusion and frustration = a worse quality of life.
its common sense ppl, its true,a microbe getting lucky in a warm pond getting hit by lightning w/all the conditions just right and creating life, all by its self to us here today in solar cars,w/the internet and Bach is very absurd..if you,as creative,mindful,idea-like human, can't accept that an ultimate designer set wheels in motion, you are the ones who will believe anything...
i like y'all calling him names, but you can't debate any of his facts..secular ppl do believe in global warming more, they do accept whatever is on the daily show as news fact...the age of stupidity...don't call me names ..argue that fact..
if you don't understand yet because you haven't read physics standard cosmology 101,you would know some Christians when they say atheist believe comes form nothing",u know they are saying that the beginning of life hasn't been determined by evolutionists and even Hitchens thinks it was aliens...and that its true if God created time and energy at big bang, something came from something,if no God,then where did first energy come from, and where here on earth did first dna and first life come from?
"If you believe it is more likely that everything... came about on its own [out of nothing]..... it is a leap of faith that absolutely dwarfs my leap of faith; [which is that a complicated being came about on its own out of nothing, and THEN went on to create complicated life.]"
"Men and women are basically the same"? Who the fuck would say such a thing? I think Dennis is lying to prove a point. Anyone who says that is a fucking dumbass. Literally.
@ThoughtGazeCarlos Post-modernists. They are scum. And very analogous to religion. If religiosity is quintessential conservative idiocy, then post-modernism is quintessential liberal idiocy.
@stoprainingonme So there is people who believe men and women are basically the same? You have to, I repeat, you have to be kidding me. Only a huge, but a huge dumbass would propose or worse state such a proclamation. Even from the conceptions of Darwinism is absurd. ABSURD. I thought Dennis was lying. But given that there are 6+ billion people on Earth I can believe that exist such people.
@ThoughtGazeCarlos The view is basically, everything is socially constructed (including gender identity, no such thing as human nature), logic is invented by white male imperialists and there's no such thing as objective truth, only subjective perception. Their hostility to science, particularly human evolution is very similar to the religionists. Post-modernism has been more-or-less destroyed by the entire philosophical community. Prager isn't lying just exaggerating hugely.
@stoprainingonme You know, you caught me (not in the literal sense). Are there any websites which you would recommend me to read about this stuff. What philosophers are you refering to here?
I had to watch part 2 just to see how pathetic Prager's retort to Hitchens is....
"the Secular believe anything" - Oh yeah, those people who don't want a theocracy like the middle east....they sure are stupid....
"...take it as a given that men and women are basically the same - you had to be secular and intellectual to believe such drivel. Religious people knew this was nonsense" WOWSERS WAY TO EXPOSE THE TRUTH PRAGER. Did he just have a brainfart or is he really that stupid?
This Prager is an idiot ! Ha students lets move on to leading scientists , nobel prize laureates and NAS members , religiosity is under 10 %. Outright lies , outright bias ,outright demagogy !
Prager's idiotic, offensive, totally thoughtless claims make me want to vomit things I don't remember having eaten. He is quite gifted at making completely illogical, assumptive claims.
Prager's argument was terrible. But, that's what you expect from theists, they're not known for their intelligence, only for their stupidity and conformity to ignorance.
That old man needs to grow up, the real answer is that atheists don’t how the universe began and neither do theists. This is an on going investigation. FACT!!!!
That old man needs to grow up, the real answer is that atheists don’t how the universe began and neither do theists. This is an on going investigation. FACT!!!!
Yeah, stupid Atheists! How can they believe in something like global warming? That's almost as stupid as believing that HIV causes AIDS.or that actual medicine works better than faith healing....
Because believing in miracles, talking snakes and zombies is far more rational than any scientific evidence for a more rapid rise on climate change (than historically 'normal'). I await the negative replies hehe.
I have watched a innumerable debates on religion vs atheism and Prager's argument puts him in a spot which makes him seem as to lack even most elementary school understanding of the evolutionary process. His weak Ad hominem attacks on secularists do not validate nor make his argument more compelling. I am still wondering where he at 0:59 got the statistical data to claim that secular persons are the least skeptical of all, I suspect he pulled that out of his anus.
On the one hand, it's invaluable to be able to watch debates such as this. On the other, look down through the comments. If you want to rebel against mom and dad by cursing religion, fine, we all go through it to some degree. However, try not compounding the degree to which you make a fool of yourself by using "ppl", "fucked up", "just tore my fucking face off". Spoken like true scientists. You moronic, weed-smoking monkeys are about to convince me better than Hitchens ever could.
No, to be an atheists is not to believe that everything came from nothing... -_-
And yes, the atheist CAN, more or less, account for a LARGE part of everything else; even if only conceptually and basically. But we no longer need a God to explain the existence of the universe.
However, the believer STILL has to explain where his God came from if he wants to state that EVERYTHING needs a cause.
Getting back to his point on education, however, are we supposed to believe a man who evidently denies Global Warming (for which there is ABSOLUTELY no counter-evidence against in the scientific community)? And given his statement about girls and boys growing up and what they play with and what they become he has obviously NO idea what the hell he is talking about, because that is something that THEISTS SAID TO BEGIN WITH. In fact, they've used arguments against against gays.
Prager can point out maybe....a dozen, MAYBE two, atheist and agnostic mass murderers and psychopaths... I can point out thousands of theistic ones, and that would just be for a start as the VAST majority of criminals are theists. The VAST majority of mass murderers, torturers, killers, and criminals in history have been, in fact, theists.
Wait...is Prager saying that religious people, on average, are more intelligent and rational than the secular world? Despite EVERY SINGLE study EVER made? The ones that show that as countries have higher and higher numbers of atheists and agnostics, as well as being more secular, have not only higher average incomes, but also higher education, are peaceful, have less crime, are more educated, have children who do better in school, etc, etc, etc.
I used to listen to Dennis Prager's radio program (many) years ago, and although I disagree(d) with him theologically and on other issues, I always respected him as a fairly reasonable person, not given to histrionics. Despite some later comments of his quoted in the newspaper which I found highly objectionable, I still afforded him a modicum of respect as a thinker. After watching this display, however, all such lingering respect has completely evaporated.
Prager does the classic "either-or" nonsense... "Either Bach came from a rock or everything related to the Judeo Christian god says is true" as if these are the only two answers. Hilarious. Think about how many things we've attributed to gods in human history, that were later solved with science... Solar systems, weather, earthquakes, germ theory, and on and on... life creation will just be one more... and if even if it isn't, just saying "god did it" advance the conversation.
I love how most of the comments are attacking Dennis personally and not his arguments in a reasonable or logical way. And the anger. It's astounding. If he's wrong, simply correct his arguments. You who are so open-minded, open your minds!
@zahayna Seconded. If he's wrong, simply correct his arguments. It shouldn't be that difficult. I often see the same reaction on vids featuring William Lane Craig.
@nemirn With logical napalm like that, who can argue? Is that really how you analyze the debate? Wish death on those who disagree with you? You do realize that is EXACTLY what Islamists do, right?
Prager's premise that religious people are somehow more enlightened about life and Hitchen's premise that non-believers are more enlightened about life are both wrong. People are pretty much stupid across the board. We cling to our respective beliefs, die and only then perhaps see the totality of ourselves. My 2 cents.
I think Dennis Prager took his whole act from Wallace Shawn's Vencini in The Princess Bride. Seriously, watch it again and try not to think, "Never make a bet with a Sicilian when DEATH is on the line!!!!"
@SamRiviera Scientists embarrass themselves by trying to make claims about whether God exists (for or against the existence of God). God's existence is a matter for philosophy only. At least Einstein delved into philosophy a bit as well, but he was by no means one of the great philosophers. Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, and Hume were the only great philosophers I can think of who were basically atheists (and I respect each immensely), but philosophers have tended toward religion overall.
@SamRiviera Wisdom and knowledge are two separate things. The best description I've come up with is that knowledge is a library of books, but comprehending the meaning in the books and applying correct action is wisdom.
Nobody would deny that Einstein and Hawking are not genius. But that doesn't mean they have wisdom about the foundational meaning of life.
Besides, Einstein believed in a god (not the Judeo-Christian, but still believed in a higher power).
here's two objects: an apple and an orange. i cut the apple open too reveal that inside it is rotten. so this fact now proves that the orange is the best possible fruit to eat. the orange is always better than the apple. any orange is always better than any apple. apples are always bad. therefore, choosing oranges is rational and choosing apples is not rational.
this is Prager's logic. defending religious theology by attempting to 'prove' that secularism is bad. wow is he lost in dogma.
I'm confused, I thought this was an academic debate. Perhaps it was a mistake on my part to assume that the Prager's opening statement would include a rational thought. What research can Prager source for his argument that Christians are typically more rational people. How does a belief in global warming or beliefs about sexual identity suggest that the secular dilute themselves into believing "nonsense"? It is clear he is not a scholar, but a bigot and does a disservice to academia.
"There is no wisdom in atheism." Says the man who believes in a God that can't be proven. Richard Dawkins dealt thoroughly with the "likelihood/probability of God" and the false premise that atheists believe "everything came about on it's own" in his book The God Delusion.
@joshgut Science cannot speak on the existence or non-existence of God, because God is not a quantifiable entity. True science can only speak on what we can observe, test, and repeat. Any scientist who claims to be able to speak on the 'likelihood/probability of God' leaves the field of science entirely and enters into philosophy. And that's fine by me, as long as they admit it and stop wrapping it in their pseudo-scientific dogmatic belief.
@MrBladeCrash "Scientist claim that nothing existed before the big bang."
Incorrect, a singularity isnt nothing, a possible multiverse isnt nothing either.
"There is no observable evidence that anything existed before the creation of the universe" observable evidence is not what big bang cosmology relies upon...
Cluster M13 cannot and is not older than the universe...data in the 1960's is out dated. we know have the hubble space telescope and can determine the furthest oldest galaxies...
@MrBladeCrash Your galaxy dating fantasy is paradoxal. If we know the age of the universe, then measuring galaxies older than the universe would entail extending the age of the universe itself. This is evidently not the case
Again the oldest galaxies are about 750 million years younger than the universe
Universe = 13.72
Oldest galaxies = 13
Where ever your getting your data from is inaccurate.
Lawrence Krauss - A universe from nothing (Youtube)
@MrBladeCrash I'm sorry, you are deeply misinformed, No one knows the state of the universe before 10-43 seconds, the singularity was an infintesimal point of infinite heat and density which means (energy) . Whatever data suggested in the 60's is not an issue. 1.) In 2010 we not only know the universe is 13.7billion years old but 13.72. 2.) The big bang theory is supported by the vast majority via vast evidence. 3.) We can estimate distance extremely accurately using standard candles.
@MrBladeCrash When you start talking about before the big bang, you are entering a realm that current physics cannot venture. String theory attempts to describe a hypervese of which our universe is only one of infinite universe's that exist in 10 or 11 dimentional space.
If this is the case then matter did indeed exist somewhere before our universe, but besides that. Our universe is 13.72 billion years old, the oldest galaxies are 13billion years old and the big bang happened.
@MrBladeCrash "1000Scientists claim that at the initial stage of Big Bang, nothing was in existence"
Incorrect. We cannot currently look back more than 10-43 seconds after initial expansion, Further more nothing doesnt mean nothing on the quantum level, a flat universe could arise from quantum fluctuations.
"But scientist are dating Galaxies older than the universe itself"
Incorrect. The universe is 13.72 billion years old, the oldest galaxies formed 500million years after...
@lmhjs1000 Terrible question. The Cosmological argument is about a series of events going back to the big bang. One event was begotten by another, and that by another, so on and so forth. But God isn't part of the series. He started the series and exists outside of it. So you can't really ask that question because it would mean you're trying to understand God within the limits of time and space, which He is not bound by.
@lmhjs1000 I am an atheist and collectively, one day, we will acount for everything. The best the Christians can hope for is to account for the last 4040 years.
fucking prager's OBSESSED with the "girls and boys are basically the same" question, talks about little else . . . his whole "argument" for why secularists are less rational than religious people revolves baffingly around it . . . he plucks random, unrelated lines of reasoning out of thin air . . . the "girls and boys are not basically the same" thing is also his reason why gay marriage is wrong! What a useful, all-purpose argument
Lol this guy avoid an even bigger account. He thinks the only thing he has to account for is human suffering? Err, where did god come from and his unlimited, absolute power? Screw suffering, I was him to account for a being that has the power to create everything and anything. Who has absolute power that is impossible. Can god create a rock so heavy that he himself cannot move? See the problem with absolutes? Even if a god did exist, he would not be absolute, that is simply naivety.
Wow this guy is insane! He could have at least had the decency to not fill his opening argument with frustrating fallacies and opinions offered as fact with no statistics or numbers.
And he actually DID the Hitler & Stalin bit, nutter!
We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the ideas of Christianity … in fact our movement is Christian. We are filled with a desire for Catholics and Protestants to discover one another in the deep distress of our own people.” Adolf Hitler, speech.
Lol what, "that is why we live in a stupid america today"? yeah because most of america is religious, look at a lot of the european countries. They don't believe in any god, and they aren't as stupid as america. The reason why america is stupid is because they are brainwashed by tv and by the bible...there you go old man.
Religious folks also believe we went from nothing to Bach, only that 'God' started the spark that eventually led to him. Prager's argments on academia and gender are tired: not ALL academics think what he said about gender. Also, it is entirely true that much of gender and its roles are culturally reinforced and taught. He clasifies all academics as the same, that's nonsense. I find his arguments glib.
How did it happen that the religious hijacked the meme that they are the ones who don't have to explain their beliefs. 'Atheists', or I would rather say non-religious folk, are held up to an exquisit degree of scrutiny and required to explain and justify everything, and the religious argument...does not. Hang on? Shouting 'God' explains nothing. It is a word used to describe something they cannot explain.
Am i the only one who felt cognitively out of breath just pondering the amount of explinations you'd have to present to your-self just the recognise and appreciate the scale of this guy's stupidity?
I had to take pauses avery 13 secondes just to physiologicaly recover.
And how intentionnally insutlting of the secular intellect can this man get?
I feel like i'm being called irrationnal by a mentaly challenged person too dump to possibly be intelligently countered.
whats the matter you godless fucks...cant rationalize your existence and so you result to name calling....you're little community is the most intolerant, arrogant, and heartless group on the earth. Id rather have an radical Islamist standing by my side then the likes of you idiots.
Sorry but a Christian can believe the say nonsense as a Atheist, but and Atheist can't believe the same nonsense that a Christian does and remain and Atheist. Ergo a Christian can actually believe more nonsense.
the only leap of faith the atheist takes is to believe that the human is naturally curious. we will continue to look, research, and seek answers. someday, doubtfully in any of our lifetimes, someone will find the answer.
@polopowers1 Not true. I am a secular humanist and Atheist, I believe in evolution, the potential of the human race, philosophy etc... I am atheist because I don't believe in any God. I don't stop disbelieving because you believe, or disbelieve or everyone believes or disbelieves. If, for instance, religion had never been created we would all be Atheist, that is to say not theist.
type in google "Look who's irrational now" and the 1st result will be a link to a Wall Street Journal article which goes over several studies which show that by and large, atheists and irreligious people are far more susceptible to believe superstition and nonsense than Christians are.
It's not difficult to see why. Once you have a single non-nonsensical viewpoint that is conflicting with more nonsensical viewpoints you are less likely to believe those, but if you don't hold that single view you can believe many more compatible nonsensical views. I don't hold the position that not believing in a god magically makes people more rational.
@mathmexican4234 Sorry but your argument is flawed. I start with a point that the wall is white. It is in fact blue to everyone else. I then argue 99 points as to why the wall is the way it is. Since the wall is not, in reality, this way all 99 points are wrong. One assumption can lead to all others being wrong. Where as I, making no assumptions, might be right, might be wrong but I have a fairly equal chance. You don't...

I think the basic problem with religious people is that they don't understand large numbers, a hell of a lot can happen in 14 billion years.
This guy thinks that Johann Sebastian Bach was floating around in space 14 billion years ago?
In space, no one can hear your cello suite.

the point is, despite brilliant scientists, the human mind simply isn't capable of understanding the deeper mechanisms of the universe. To assume that we could, or should motivates us to probe and experiment leading to innovations leading to an improved quality of life. To assume that we KNOW however (goddidit) is dead stop self-delusion, a lifetime spent in highly distracting confusion and frustration = a worse quality of life.

But given that there are 6+ billion people on Earth I can believe that exist such people.
ThoughtGazeCarlos 10 months ago
@ThoughtGazeCarlos The view is basically, everything is socially constructed (including gender identity, no such thing as human nature), logic is invented by white male imperialists and there's no such thing as objective truth, only subjective perception. Their hostility to science, particularly human evolution is very similar to the religionists. Post-modernism has been more-or-less destroyed by the entire philosophical community. Prager isn't lying just exaggerating hugely.

No, to be an atheists is not to believe that everything came from nothing... -_-
And yes, the atheist CAN, more or less, account for a LARGE part of everything else; even if only conceptually and basically. But we no longer need a God to explain the existence of the universe.
However, the believer STILL has to explain where his God came from if he wants to state that EVERYTHING needs a cause.
tskasa1 1 year ago
Getting back to his point on education, however, are we supposed to believe a man who evidently denies Global Warming (for which there is ABSOLUTELY no counter-evidence against in the scientific community)? And given his statement about girls and boys growing up and what they play with and what they become he has obviously NO idea what the hell he is talking about, because that is something that THEISTS SAID TO BEGIN WITH. In fact, they've used arguments against against gays.
tskasa1 1 year ago
Prager can point out maybe....a dozen, MAYBE two, atheist and agnostic mass murderers and psychopaths... I can point out thousands of theistic ones, and that would just be for a start as the VAST majority of criminals are theists. The VAST majority of mass murderers, torturers, killers, and criminals in history have been, in fact, theists.
tskasa1 1 year ago
Wait...is Prager saying that religious people, on average, are more intelligent and rational than the secular world? Despite EVERY SINGLE study EVER made? The ones that show that as countries have higher and higher numbers of atheists and agnostics, as well as being more secular, have not only higher average incomes, but also higher education, are peaceful, have less crime, are more educated, have children who do better in school, etc, etc, etc.

I guess Einstein had no wisdom, and Stephen Hawking is living a life idiocy. I can't wait to burn in hell with these genius's.
SamRiviera 1 year ago
@SamRiviera Scientists embarrass themselves by trying to make claims about whether God exists (for or against the existence of God). God's existence is a matter for philosophy only. At least Einstein delved into philosophy a bit as well, but he was by no means one of the great philosophers. Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, and Hume were the only great philosophers I can think of who were basically atheists (and I respect each immensely), but philosophers have tended toward religion overall.
dbmcmillan 1 year ago

It is clear he is not a scholar, but a bigot and does a disservice to academia.

jurgenschwarzgruber1 1 year ago
"There is no wisdom in atheism." Says the man who believes in a God that can't be proven. Richard Dawkins dealt thoroughly with the "likelihood/probability of God" and the false premise that atheists believe "everything came about on it's own" in his book The God Delusion.
joshgut 1 year ago
@joshgut Science cannot speak on the existence or non-existence of God, because God is not a quantifiable entity. True science can only speak on what we can observe, test, and repeat. Any scientist who claims to be able to speak on the 'likelihood/probability of God' leaves the field of science entirely and enters into philosophy. And that's fine by me, as long as they admit it and stop wrapping it in their pseudo-scientific dogmatic belief.

["We now have the hubble space telescope"] sorry
lmhjs1000 1 year ago
@MrBladeCrash "Scientist claim that nothing existed before the big bang."
Incorrect, a singularity isnt nothing, a possible multiverse isnt nothing either.
"There is no observable evidence that anything existed before the creation of the universe" observable evidence is not what big bang cosmology relies upon...
Cluster M13 cannot and is not older than the universe...data in the 1960's is out dated. we know have the hubble space telescope and can determine the furthest oldest galaxies...
lmhjs1000 1 year ago
@MrBladeCrash Your galaxy dating fantasy is paradoxal. If we know the age of the universe, then measuring galaxies older than the universe would entail extending the age of the universe itself. This is evidently not the case
Again the oldest galaxies are about 750 million years younger than the universe
Universe = 13.72
Oldest galaxies = 13
Where ever your getting your data from is inaccurate.
Lawrence Krauss - A universe from nothing (Youtube)
all your wonders will be answered
lmhjs1000 1 year ago
@MrBladeCrash I'm sorry, you are deeply misinformed, No one knows the state of the universe before 10-43 seconds, the singularity was an infintesimal point of infinite heat and density which means (energy) . Whatever data suggested in the 60's is not an issue. 1.) In 2010 we not only know the universe is 13.7billion years old but 13.72. 2.) The big bang theory is supported by the vast majority via vast evidence. 3.) We can estimate distance extremely accurately using standard candles.
lmhjs1000 1 year ago
@MrBladeCrash When you start talking about before the big bang, you are entering a realm that current physics cannot venture. String theory attempts to describe a hypervese of which our universe is only one of infinite universe's that exist in 10 or 11 dimentional space.
If this is the case then matter did indeed exist somewhere before our universe, but besides that. Our universe is 13.72 billion years old, the oldest galaxies are 13billion years old and the big bang happened.
lmhjs1000 1 year ago
