#4 High brass is the lightest load i'd ever consider for a human sized target. Get some PDX-1 and stop the pussy-footing around, you say if your life is on the line you'd not hesitate to drop someone - so get some real ammunition for that sexy shotgun will ya?

No problem. If I may, I'd like to recommend you to look into the AK74. It shoots a 5.45x39 AKA the poison bullet. They go for ~$300 for the Bulgarian versions. Reliable, many times more accurate than the AK47, and even the non corrosive ammo is dirt cheap. It's a great companion to my Mosin Nagant and my choice of home defense alongside the Ruger SR40. Can't argue with 30 hollowpoints. XD

I just moved from rural town living to an apartment where wall penetration with friendlies just became an issue. 100% behind making my first three or so shots rubber buck shot, but is there a fine line somewhere for shot and dram size for more lethal rounds if the threat persists? For instance, would a 3" 6 shot still penetrate standard walls where a 2 3/4" 6 shot just be weak enough to make the difference? Any resources or thoughts would be helpful. @1IdeaAhead I think number 6 would definitely penetrate at least one wall.. you have to remember that the velocity isnt going to come down much from muzzle velocity in tight spaces. so at roughly 1200 fps muzzle velocity, that stuff is screaming pretty good.

As you say, there are tons of opinions on shotgun loads and I kept 00 buck loaded for a long time. After watching a couple of vids testing and see 00 buck go through 2 walls then blast through the 5/8 plywood backstop, I changed to #4 shot. I think it's a good compromise. #7 is too light.

Hey chaos, I read about a home defense plan for a family in S.W.A.T magazine i think. I went like this.
1. have a safe room with a phone, weapons, and something to get behind and still protect.
2. call 911 and leave them on and clearly state (to the operator and the burgelar) that you are armed and know how to use it.
3. depends on what happens.
