The brilliance of this ending is in a film full to the brim with forboding and grim suprises Fincher actually manages to trump the rest of the film with this scene. And what a scene it is. It's a difficult watch for sure, but that fight that Pitt and Fincher had with the studio execs to not change the ending was worth it. Whoever gave them the greenlight to include it deserves a medal, particularly when you see the crap that Hollywood churns out these days.

So when Spacey kills Pitt's wife, he did it out of envy, because he "admires" his life. So thats six of the seven sins. Spacey tells Pitt this and Pitt becomes full of anger. So this is why Freeman tells him not to shoot him, or he will win. Pitt unleashes wrath on Spacey, the seventh sin was committed, and it all comes together.
