There's a difference between government unions and private sector unions. Government unions negotiate with fellow government politicians who they own. This breeds corruption whereby we end up with salaries and benefit packages that are twice amount of the private sector.

They've little export market compared to Japanese or European cars. Who have got world wide markets. Unions have a place in the market, as long as government doesn't give to union workers privileges non-union workers don't have. If non-union work is cheaper/better quality, a company should be allowed to take it. Likewise, if a company signs a contract with a union, the government should hold them to it. That's all I have to say about that.

to think the union caused the collapse of GM is obsurd, GMs collapse is entirely the fault of the big wigs that own GM. I think what most forget, even the UAW workers, is that the car employees work for the car companies, not the unions. Unions helped make the workplace safer, cleaner, and helped develop a better living wage. But as we now have OSHA, BWC, EPA, State & Federal laws to protect workers, unions are no longer needed. I personally know of two owners moving their companies to southern states to avoid the unions. It was either move or go out of business because they could not compete with added wages
The rights have been established and protected thru laws and regulations. Unions are no longer needed. In order for small companies to compete with foreign goods, a union is not going to be good for that company. Company will will either move or close. Facts are facts, I do feel sorrow for anybody that has to make concessions to keep a job, but one MUST remember, a union can promise you everything but guarantee you nothing. Again i must stress that these employees work for the company.

There's a difference between government unions and private sector unions. Government unions negotiate with fellow government politicians who they own. This breeds corruption whereby we end up with salaries and benefit packages that are twice amount of the private sector.

The reason why GM and Chrysler is because they make cars that only work in America with low petrol prices and low emission standards
They've little export market compared to Japanese or European cars. Who have got world wide markets. The same thing happened to the British car manufacturing in the 70s and 80s the car designs where miles behind that of the European manufactures. They did the exact same thing try to blame to unions. Others have high employments right are there still successful.

@RoastedLocust before unions workers had very little political power or ability to protest against low wages and poor working conditions, unions have led to a massive increase in the quality of life for millions and are essential to creating a fairer society.
sometimes unions can go too far, (e.g the union UNITE and BA) yet there are laws to stop them from running riot and by and large they are a great help to the oppressed and vunerable.

I've seen it to many times in both public and private union jobs. Lazy people that do barley enough to even show up for the job. They get fired, call the union rep, and are back to work in 2 weeks. Examples, teachers union, UPS, Kroger. These people are just afraid that they'll actually have to work for a living and save a little of their own money.

Then came around every week to collect their "share" so they can "protect you"

John E. Nelson, a bus driver, in Wisconsin received $159K Salary in 2009. There are 6 other bus drivers that made such money (i.e, Greg Tatman made $125K). Can someone please explain this to me HOW the state (which is in deep debt) can afford to pay this much money ? To me it doesn't seem that the Union is the victim here.

Strikes are a last resort for anything and while I think certain jobs rightfully need a cap, we should look past just your laborers, how much does management make? how much does the CEO make? you seem to think that unions are some entity meant to fuck over a company, yet some companies that are non union fuck themselves over fine. Also, the bigger issue here is that the more rights and benefits you give the workers, the less control the CEOs, etc. have. Also, if they paid everyone a decent wage, the middle class would grow again. This leaves less $ in the short term for these people. Long term, the people will be able to buy the products, but they're not in it for the long haul. They wanna take the money and run.

Unions have a place in the market, as long as government doesn't give to union workers privileges non-union workers don't have. If non-union work is cheaper/better quality, a company should be allowed to take it. Likewise, if a company signs a contract with a union, the government should hold them to it. That's all I have to say about that.

True, they ask for better wages, better benefits, and a retirement their members can look forward to. But my gosh, those members are what keep the company running. I did work at Chrysler some years back as an independent contractor doing work that had nothing to do with cars and the Union was up my ass constantly claiming I was taking "union work" though there was not an employee capable of doing what I did.

So what is piggish about Capitalism and not so piggish about Communism? You have greed in both systems. Who is greedier: A guy who works 60 hours a week and wants to keep all his money or a leech who covets the wealth of the hard worker, sits on his ass, and wants money for nothing? What's piggish about capitalism and not communism? Lets take your example real quick. The guy that works 60 hours a week and the leech is BOTH capitalism. The 60 hour guy is the employee and the leech is the corporate CEO. Both examples are capitalism at its worst.

A corporate CEO is no more a leech than communist "premier", or a General in the Army, A coach of a football team, or any other structural leader not involved in production of a product or service.

What's wrong with marijuana anyway? I never get rid of CEOs. All I was saying is they make WAY too much money for the work that they do. Just like actors. They're overpaid. And I know you're probably gonna say "Well their job is really tough and stressful, and it requires expertise." Yes it does, but even that being true, they still make too much money. I'm really changing my mind these social programs are working I mean check this out it's for real: In June, the federal government spent $1,047 in stimulus money to buy a rider mower from the Toro Company to cut the grass at the Fayetteville National Cemetery in Arkansas. Now, a report on the governments stimulus Web site improbably claims that that single lawn mower sale helped save or create 50 jobs.
I had no idea it was this simple I bet they were union jobs too.

Well that makes two of us I'm neither. Bush lost me on the 700B Tarp bailouts. But I will keep hammering the O man because when he took office there was still half of those funds unused and he could have stopped pissing the rest away but instead he finished what bush started.
Then went on to quadruple the Financial bailouts. Then goes on to outspend Bush's 8 year spending spree in a year.
Blame Bush is getting old.

You know.. in a way its both their faults. If it wasnt for companies trying to steal benefits and pensions from their hardworking and dedicated (some for more than 40 years) employees, there wouldnt be any unions. The unions are put there to protect the benefits of the employees. but then what happens is the union turns into the company and wants too much sometimes, there are a couple factories that had to close down cause they simply had to pay too much because thats what the union wanted =/

The Republican ideal: Its wrong to pay union members an agreed-upon wage (or have a union for that matter), but perfectly fine to pay AIG executives that killed the company huge bonuses. So its ok to overpay someone, as long as they're wearing a suit. Yeah...that makes sense.

Could you put up a 70 story building after 20 minutes of training? After 20 minutes of training you would step in a hole and fall 10 floors to your death because you would have no idea what the hell you were doing. Either that or you would cut off your hand with a power saw. Come to my job, you wouldn't last 10 minutes. I built AOL Time Warner, the new WTC#7, and many other complicated projects.

I think what most forget, even the UAW workers, is that the car employees work for the car companies, not the unions. Unions helped make the workplace safer, cleaner, and helped develop a better living wage. But as we now have OSHA, BWC, EPA, State & Federal laws to protect workers, unions are no longer needed. I personally know of two owners moving their companies to southern states to avoid the unions. It was either move or go out of business because they could not compete with added wages

The rights have been established and protected thru laws and regulations. Unions are no longer needed. In order for small companies to compete with foreign goods, a union is not going to be good for that company. Company will will either move or close. Facts are facts, I do feel sorrow for anybody that has to make concessions to keep a job, but one MUST remember, a union can promise you everything but guarantee you nothing. Again i must stress that these employees work for the company.

There is more freedom and opportunity in the US than in any other country, and if you can't cut it here thats your fault. Not the fault of big business. Go start your own company.
