I really want to know the weight of the patient b4 the surgery, and the final weight, when the lap band was removed. Did it have anything to do with her complications. Did the patient confess what was done wrong on her part and that caused the erosion. As far as the lap band penetrating the tissue: Are you saying that eventually every patient will experience some sort of compliacions, because the foreign object in time will penetrate the pouch and although people want lap band for life, but...
Hello, My name is Naira, I have a question. my doctor told me that they only way people get erosion or slippage, if they keep throwing up, and they don't go to doctor for adjustment. I was told that less then 4% of the patient go thru this experience, only if they don't follow the diet and some guidelines. but now I read in your messages that "an old adagio in surgery says that forein body araound a hollow viscus has a tendency to penetrate into it" Now, I am confused and worried.
I agree with aiannelli1. Sometimes the most experienced and skilled endoscopist fails to remove the eroded band with a gastroscope. In such a case we have to remove the band using laparoscopy.
She got her surgery in another bariatric center. The problem was to remove the band. Endoscopy failed and I removed it laparoscopically as already described. Whatever the technique band leads to complications in the long-term. Go to the literature!
Would the lap-band material have anything to with the erosion? There are now new 100% resorbable polymers which are biocompatible; would these work better than the current materials, or is this more technique related as suggested below
I don't think that the resorbable polymers will do here. The concept of gastric banding is based upon life-long implantation of the device. Imagine the resorbable devise disappears with time; then the beneficial effect of the operation is also going to disappear. I am not sure it is a good thing.
I don't know where she got her surgery, but the techniques used in this video are decades old and can lead to complications. The problem was most likely not the band, but the surgery itself.
haha, I overestimated you... I thought you were old enough to not have to resort to calling someone a fag. I guess that's the problem with half-educated morons... they have very limited vocabulary. Thanks for your professional opinion VanDouche.
this same thing happened to me is the worse thing, never had a great weightloss with the band, i managed to lose 100 pounds with montignac method and never hurted me like the band or when i choked with food
She had a Swedish band (Obtech)2-years before. Different hypothesis can be made on the causes of erosion such as an infection at the level of the port, the technique of band placement but an old adagio in surgery says that forein body araound a hollow viscus has a tendency to penetrate into int.
The band had been placed 2 years before the erosion was diagnosed. It is hard to say when the erosion started: probably several months before the diagnosis when the patient started to gain weight
Thats a lot of fat.

after all the longevity of the lap band won't last for life, may be in 5 or 10 years no one will escape from the complication of the lap band.
I want to know your profession opinion. I means a lot for me, please, help me with your answers and shed some light on my concerns. Love. Naira

Can you please tell me what type of band this woman used and when it was placed originally? Do you have any idea what caused the erosion??
What happens now? Is her stomach all torn up? How do you fix this? Did she get another WLS?
