I've stood in the shadows of Motown since I was a kid. My book of love was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. For a beautiful while, it was my cathedral. I worshiped at its altar, my heart and soul lifted high into the vaulted heights of its gilded dome by the ethereal riffs of The Funk Brothers carrying the sacred voices of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Supremes – the celestial choir celebrating God’s perfect creation.
Not enough can be said in gratitude for the afficionado and player who followed this through to the end - Allan Slutsky; without his efforts, these guys would still be in the "shadows". By way of a postscript, Chaka, in my opinion, put a beautiful stamp of her own soul on this song, which is exactly what an artist is supposed to do. I can tell that if Marvin would have been there, he would have approved of the way she sang.
This for me is the best part of the movie , when the surviving Funk Brothers come out on stage carrying pictures of the brothers in spirit ,tears always stream down my face , why ? I don't know , they just do and I don't care . Every Motown tune I listen to now I find myself paying more attention to the backing track knowing that the best studio band that ever was were providing us with priceless memories of our youth .
you just have to cry when you hear this. especially when the choir comes in on the last chorus.......even pistol allen said it....he couldnt believe it either...astonishing
montell williams keeps the integrity of the song, but chaka khan tries to make the song her own which doesnt sound too good. she kinda ruins it fo rme by adjusting the delivery of each song she sings. this is not her song so she shouldn't modify it because it isn't her own. she aint too hot to listen to anyway. it really bothers me that she thinks she can make it better by singing it differently like the way that new guy sang "get ready" for the temptations but only made it sound worse. lol.
The greates sound ever!!!! Amazing bunch of musicians who formed the soundtrack to many a life back in the days, and what days they were!! How lucky were we to experience those unique times in music history. Thanks so much for sharing!
Hard to watch this without the tears of joy starting to flow. Even if it's only in my mind, it lets me, and I'm sure so many others, turn back the clock. There is a lot of great music today, but Motown was more than great music... it transcended race, religion, and generation.
The current groups , singers and musicians have nothing on that golden age of music ..................so little of the current stuff is even music as we know it can be!! Thanks for posting this !
