@MrJohntube12 Bloomfield left Butterfield's band around '67 and already had 2 LPs with his band The Electric Flag. In '68, he recorded with Al Kooper on the LP "Super Sessions". I read a good biography of him, but have already passed it on and don't remember the name. But, Bloomfield's presence in this band was sorely missed.
hi I was there. It was Monday morning and most had already left maybe 30,000 people there. Sha Na Na had been brought as a replacement band.My main memory was how amazing Butterfield's band was that morning. Buzzy Felton totally totally blew the crowd away. Jimi was there waiting his turn to perform. He stood there with his mouth hanging watching the Butterfield Band. Never understood why they didn't make the movie. Maybe I should ask Artie.
This will have been the fourth of seven tracks Butter did at Woodstock. The Dinwiddie solo shows what an often under rated cat this guy was.Butters' vocals are stretched. Good song. Excellent stuff by the horn section.
these guys were ahead of the times at Woodstock.....straight up '70s soul/funk right here! If you ask me they shouldve had Jimi play through the late night/early morning and had these guys close the festival as it was getting light. Fuck sha na na.
It is "Morning Sunrise" "Baby all I can feel is: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ -- _ - _ "-
So glad there is any kinda of footage of this incredible influential band. What an all-star team of original sounding players. The fact that they didn't make it into the film is a crime. Buzzy was so fresh and spontaneous and a great solo from Gene Dinwiddie. Paul was a great musician, band leader and a eye for talent. Nice edit!
hey guys, thanks that you mention rod hicks. he impressed me a lot in the days i started playing and he still does. just recently i bought the 'keep on moving' album again. bbb is really one of my all time favorite bands. many many thanks for posting this video.
I roadied a lot of gigs for this very band any time Paul played if I got there I was in I'd help load in and out sometimes fix amps right on stage from behind lose tubes whatever, knew him from when I was 17 in 1969 right after Woodstock I think we first met...I'm not sure Rod Hicks is here on bass, once Rod had joined that was when I first met him...in 1969...I had met Bloomfield in 1967 when 15...LOL..! What a trip..!
funny you mention Rod Hicks. hearing him made me buy a fretless bass and Kustom cabinet. trying to get his sound from "The Boxer" on their live album. those were the magic years...
Rod was is amazing if you get Aretha Sings the Blues From Delta to Detroit you'll hear him on a lot of the best cuts from live shows he did with her...there is also an old Ray Charles Country album with Rod on all of it not his first one but the 2nd...it's unmistakable it's Rod..you've got good taste buddy wish you were closer to Woodstock NY..
thanks, man. i'm still into his style of bass playing (along with Jamerson). i'll be looking for these albums now. i was in Montreal in '69 and i almost went but got lazy and stayed home. nothing ventured - nothing gained. by the way, i'm in the middle of buying an ampeg 8x10 cab and can't decide between the ampeg SVT-CL or SVT-VR head. do you have any opinion on these two bass amps?
I always hear about the VR but couldn't tell you anything but if one is tubes and the other not go with the tube version...maybe the CL is classic I go with that one which ever is closer to the original design..I do a lot of work or have in music shops and have played with several guys with them..! Good luck with it..TJ
This song is called All My Love Comin' Through To You, not Morning Sunrise. I was at Woodstock and saw this live. There was a song they played where at one point the sing "The Sun's Coming Up" over and over. Anyone know which song contains this? I've been trying to figure that out for 40 years.
@contactces Respectfully, I do believe the title is "Morning Sunrise" as it was on the lp that followed "In My Own Dream" which was Elvins's final one w the band. Buzzy was on the one with this track. I had the lp when it came out as I was (am ) a Butterfiield-ista. His boy Gabriel runs a listening room /museum not far from here in Beautiful Sopchoppy, Florida- near Tallahassee. Shame the band didn't make into the Movie. Butterfield was always the top of the tree. God Keep him..
You are absolutely right. I stand corrected. This is on the 40th Anniversary Woodstock Movie DVD. I remember them playing this at Woodstock like it was yesterday.
I have never seen video of Love March. I don't believe they shot it. From what I have read and seen on tv documentaries, they only shot a few songs of most bands, not everything that was played. There is a new Woodstock DVD being released in a few weeks that supposidly has all the video that was shot, we will see what new video pops up.
Well The PBBB played on very early Monday morning, Sha Na Na followed them, then Hendrix. That sky you see here is the sun coming up. Technically CSN&Y also played Monday morning at like 3 a.m.!
The goog news is they are releasing a new DVD set in June that is suppossed to have all the avialable video I believe. There are 4 Butterfield songs on video that I have, and others have, presumeably all will be in the new set. Sweetwater also. I saw them a lot in Ft Lauderdale, great band, before Nancy Nevins had her car accident, a real shame.
Morning Sunrise IS RIGHT! The Paul Butterfield Blues Band went on Monday, Aug. 18th after the festival ended Sunday night! When I was a kid I used to think only Jimi played that morning, then I found out he was preceeded by Butterfield, then Sha Na Na! What time are The PBBBB playing anyways? Like 6 a.m. or so?
The awesome Buzz Feiten has a new album just out with Brandon Fields . Type in Feiten Dinwiddie and watch the bonus video track from it .. dedicated to the late great Brother Gene Dinwiddie .
Am aware that Brother Gene Dinwiddie is dead, he was around 10 years older than the rest of the group but under what circumstances? He was excellent on his solo here and also 'Double trouble' on the 'Resurrection ' album.
The filming at Woodstock was actually prety good considering the circumstances. Monterey Pop was a much more sedate and controled situation to film in. Also, a lot of what you see on YouTube was not released in the orignial move and comes from "rare" sources. It's a case of you take what you can get or else you might never have been able to see it.
Look at 'Driftin' and driftin' at Monterey '67 which was late June (22nd) in the afternoon. Two years later the same track was performed in the early hours of Monday morning around 6am which was the overspill from the thunderstorms etc from that bank holiday weekend. What you see is what was there- poor visibilty.
This is the finest R&B -Blues- Jazz Band ever. Because of theis, you had other outfits were spawned out of this - Blood Sweat & tears, Chicago, Edgar Winter etc.... Butter was way ahead of his time, but without the record sales, he Lost hope. What a Loss.
Much extended version from the 'Movin on' album. Butterfields' vocals stretched, plus no harmonica. The often overlooked Dinwiddie stole the show here. Was the lineup Butterfield vcls, Rod Hicks bss Philip Wilson dr Ted Harris kyb Buzz Feiten g David sanborn alto sax Brother Gene Dinwiddie tenor sax Trevor Lawrence tenor sax Steve Mudaio trumpet Keith Johnson trumpet ? Also is there a version of LOVE MARCH which Butterfield performed for reasons best known to himself ? on woodstock album.
Hi, Yes you have the band members correct. Most of the later to be Full Moon band (sans Neil Larsen) here. There is no video of Love March that I know of, only the audio on the Woodstock albums. I have seen the promoters on tv documentaries (Michael Wadley & Arnie Kornfield I think?) and they said for most acts they just took video of about 3 or 4 tunes, not the whole set unfortunatly.
Also Gene Dinwiddie and Philip Wilson. Yes, a lot of great musicians came through Butter's band. This was the first band with horns that I could accept. I was a guitar guy. Previously, at my age at the time, if the band had any horns I hated it. Butter's band made me realize that not all horns are bad.
Thank you. I Buzzy's first concert with Butter in New York on a Sunday morning at Sheeps Head Meadow opening for the Airplane and the 1st New York appearance of the Grateful Dead. He not only had to replace Elvin Bishop (guitar) but Mark Naftalin (keyboards) who played their last show the night before at the Fillmore East. He came out with a red tele with flames on it wearing a tshirt and a little scarf around his neck. He would grow into the Buzzy of legend from that point on.
Amazing! I thought that no footage existed because the camera man fell asleep. What time they they go on. Why this great band was never in the movie is beyond comperhension.
You are welcome. To the best of my knowledge there were 3 tunes video taped. All are on YouTube. Based upon the video lighting it looks like they went on early morning around dawn as the lighting gets lighter as the songs move along. And, yes, they were a great band, everyone plays great !!
I read that they went on early Monday morning. Lots of people had already left. then Sha Na Na played, then Hendrix. In the movie, you can see that most of the people had left by the time Jimi went on.
Check out the bass player playing an Ampeg fiberglass stand-up string bass, strapped on like a Fender Precision Bass. And Gene Dinwiddie kills!
