I dont think we can just pin the dwindling numbers going to church with the child sex scandal alone. I think its too easy an answer. Many people have turned away from the Church because of its outspoken attitudes to contraception, divorce, abortion and the myriad of other social issues which it comments on. The reality is that its a medieval institution trying to survive in a twenty first century world. The branch bends with the wind or it breaks.

The incompetent police and cowardly government - as well as the cud-chewing, slack jawed peasant populace -are as much if not more to blame. There were chances to intervene that were never taken. Apparently saving face was more important than saving children's lives in Taliban Ireland. As for the bishops who covered up, sweet words of apology in our ears won't cut it this time: we're not naive young altar boys anymore. You bishops know the honorable way out - suicide. We are waiting. So is Hell.

We need to free our education system from catholic church control, less than 50% of population are observant catholics, yet they still control 92% of our schools! it's a disgrace. I went to catholic schools (thankfully I wasn't abused) for 13 years and I wish they hadn't been filling my head with their nonsense dogma(virgin births, hellfire etc) all that time. It's time we had freedom FROM religion here in Ireland! p.s. I'm disgusted but not surprised by the latest clerical sex abuse report.

The church claims to be the arbiter of morality yet it has a history of forging a ruling elite above beyond law, morality, reproach. Members are told they need not take responsibility for their actions in this life for they will be absolved of their misdeeds in the next so long as they repent before the end. If they suffer a bothered conscience, they can confess, chant a few incantations and all is forgiven. Is it any wonder that Catholic countries have an inclination towards corruption.

Unfortunately Protestantism is associated with English occupation and all its cruelty, death and horrors. Even though there are many genuine Christian Protestant, they have an ugly history in Ireland and are not likely to be a substitute for Irish traditional Christianity. A Christ centered Catholic Church with valid sacraments, completely independent of Rome similar to the Polish National Catholic or the Orthodox churches where the priests are married ,might be the answer. It´s a horrible and apalling thing to be abused. But there was a wonderful old Irish saying that stops me from being poisoned by resentment, blame, and hatred - I will leave so and so to God.
God will judge those who refuse to hear their own conscience crying out to them. That thought has cleaned out poison from my heart and filled it full of love.
Don´t forget the 1000s of Catholic priests and nuns who were a force of good and love in the world! Irish priests who died for the poor!

This is a rather a lot of rubbish. I NEVER ever heard that the Catholic church didn´t want people to think for themselves! ALL abuse is EVIL. But is God evil because SOME priests do evil actions? Borgia popes behaved in an evil way. Did that make the eternal church evil? The rot started in the 1960s with all these bad changes. Every one can make up things for themselves and there is no firm teaching. We can discard God and worship ourselves and money and ego!. Vatican II and all that nonsense!
