nyrainbow...your vids are the best! This was the song that I was looking for and I did not know who did it. A fun little band at a bar one night covered this song right after Rock and Roll Woman and I thought Buffalo Springfield did it! So I searched their music with no luck, and finally just googled the lyrics I could remember. Since then I've sort of re-discovered the Hollies and remembered how much I enjoyed their music way back when! Love love love Alan the most-as he was then and now!
Love this song! Hollies fans..there is a new DVD that will be available next month on Amazon. It is a must! Hubby (music writer/reviewer) and I received an advance copy and watched it about 2 weeks ago. It's fantastic. Crystal clear video and audio..amazing for the age of the footage. Check it out..I think it's up for pre-order right now. Includes current interviews with Graham, Allan, Tony and others.
Brilliaint!! These guys look good sound good and probably even smell good. It is however a shame that Bobby and Tony were not able to make the RRHOF fame presentations, would have loved to see them there... I hope one day they will make it to the USA with their current configuration...I love them all ... but especially the originals.
GENIUS.. Pure Brit magic.. Alan Clarke, the band, the harmony is nothing less than fabulous.. this is one of those enigmas where the song was a big hit in the UK, but here in the USA, the song stiffed.. As a 40+ year on air DJ, (who is STILL playing this cut on the air) I apologize for the short-sightedness of those who didn't give this record a second listen.. oh.. and add to this, "Look Through Any Window".. shoulda done MUCH better on the charts..
@penrhyndeundraeth my thoughts exactly!! look at them dance!! all the outdoor vids they shot in sweeden on that tour are fabulous - so far ahead of their time! glen, i hear ya - hicks+guitar=genius!! thnx for posting! kc
Am here again thanking you nyrainbow for another great nostalgic upload. Brings back the memories of that first motor bike and the juke boxes in the pubs.
Love this song and video!! Just saw Graham Nash yesterday in Rochester, NY as he received an award from the George Eastman House for his contributions to photography...
I recall my dad watching a variety program that the Hollies were on, right around this time, and through the whole song, he never made a sound, but when the song ended and all the applause died away he simply said "Those boys are damned good." You should know one thing...my dad HATED, DETESTED, and DESPISED rock music. But these guys impressed him. I wasn't surprised...still not. They're an impressive bunch.
@Aibajunno I think my dad probably liked them too...but he got sick of me playing this and 'Just One Look' over and over and over again.....poor bloke.
My old band used to cover this. We once opened a show for Dave Sharp of The Alarm; when we soundchecked with that song, came up to me and said "The Hollies--man that was great!) I always patterned my vocal style after Allan Clarke. I love how Bobby Elliott does the little "under crash" @ 2:07-2:11---I always do that too! Interesting too, is the camera angle of him playing the snare without the heads/snares @ 1:27. The camera-man must of really wanted that shot!
You can definitely hear why David Crosby chose Graham Nash as the foil to Steven Stills and himself in this song. David's voice rings true throughout. Having said that Allan Clarke on lead vocals is awesome and Tony Hicks is undiluted genius.
The original version of this by Evie Sands is great. The 1980 cover by Linda Ronstadt is fine too (on an album heavily slammed by music critics, though it's not that bad). The Hollies's cover is fantastic because they appear to be genuinely full of exuberance singing those multiple harmonies on a track they so obviously enjoyed recording. Infectious it most definitely is, and it's definitive proof they should've been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame a long time before now.
Why the f*** wasn't this a hit? The last minute of this song---from 1:27 to the end---has got to be one of the top ten rock and roll moments ever captured. Hall of Fame for this one alone!
@cogscretin Yeah, Linda recorded this on her much-reviled "punk" album, "Mad Love"---made the Top 40 in 1980...unlike the Hollies version. From the "Life Isn't Fair" file.
Obviously, with circa 25,000 hits you must already know, but i cannot help but adding my thanks: Posting this video was a great public service. Many thanks nyrainbow4.
Evie Sands did the original on Blue Cat Records and the Hollies' version on Imperial ended up being the bigger hit. No matter which one you prefer, though, it's a classic in every sense of the word.
Willie's gotta be there - he helped to found the group in the first place. Sylvester should be there to represent how they soldiered on even without Graham, though of course I will always think the Nash era was the best.
I think they'll both be there but I'm wondering what the vibe will be ...will they share a mike on stage or will it be an unfriendly scene ...a lot of water under the bridge... I've always been a fan so I have to say I like both eras. Can't wait !!!!
Really? To play with Dave Crosby and Steve Stills! The Hollies were going in a direction Graham Nash didn't want to go, as their next album was "Hollies Play and Sing Dylan" or something. I think the most excited I ever got in a record shop was when I first saw (and straight away bought) the first CS&N album. I would have rolled off of Raquel Welch to join that band!
Thanks I know the whole history of the Hollies & CS&N but I was really talking about the HARMONY'S that Allan Tony & Graham had and to me and this is my opinion they were second to none and no match for CS&N. CS&N took far to many drugs (and so did I in the 70's) and there was so much time wasted on the way (get it) that in the 70's even without Nash the Hollies made some great records and really left CS&N in the dust maybe not money wise but as far as music CS&N can't touch'em.
I didn't mean to downplay either - I was sticking up for BOTH the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash by pointing out the alchemy in both had to do with what they had in common - the one and only Nash. Stylistically they are a bit different though - can't a person like both bananas and grapefruit?
" Can't a person like both bananas and grapefruit".... simply put....No !!!!! :) Just Joking with you. I was most likely a fan while you were still being breast feed, saw them in the early 70's at the Santa Monica Civic but sad to say never saw them when Nash was with the band except on TV.
No harm done, fellow Hollies fan! *S* Actually I was six years old when America first heard the Nash-era Hollies, and thanks to listening to them and the Beach Boys I took harmony for granted and learned how to sing it 'at the feet of Nash and Wilson.' My singing was so much influenced by that of Nash, down to the tone of my voice, that my choir directors wanted to train that out of me.... but never succeeded. Over the past few years I have come to acknowledge my debt to Graham. *S*
I was lucky enough to meet Graham Nash once at the Beverly Center here in Los Angeles he was with his family I remember his son Jackson was just 10. This was in the early 80's just when CD were first coming out , I remember complaining to him that there were very few Hollies CD's and told him that I knew he thought that CS&N music was better than Hollies music but that there were a lot of people out there that felt that Hollies music was far superior. I mention how I use to play the LP
(Pt. 2 sorry ran out of space) Evolution over & over again as a kid and then I said do you remember the song "Lullaby for Tim" and he had this strange look on his face like he hadn't thought of that song in years, at that time his wife Susan was getting a little tired of Graham talking to fans and Graham politely said "see ya".....My personal brush with greatness.
Can't wait to see the broadcast of the R&R Hall Of Fame just to see maybe, just maybe Graham & Terry sharing the stage and mike :D.
I was lucky enough to ask Graham Nash a question during a radio interview last year, and just so I wouldn't fall all over myself with excitement I asked a question about 'Fifty Winters Later' and wished him a happy birthday. It made my season! One of these days I would love to meet him face to face and shake his hand.
@titanicslim I have never known a CS&N fan. Who are they? I just remember a few of their songs that to me, a young girl at the time, seemed really creepy. Just a song before I go was tough to sit through. What should I listen to, other than anything that got any radio play to appreciate them? This doesn't pertain to Neil Young. Like the Hollies, HE was awesome. .
@scunnered74 I was a big fan of Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds- and The Hollies- so the blending of those harmonies was nearly magic in my ears. We still loved Motown, the Blues and Rock and Roll but CS&N appealed to those of us who were really tired of the Pop music of the 'Sixties. Their first record, Crosby Stills and Nash, has a lot of great songs on it. Incidentally, the song you mention was written in 30 minutes in an airport departure lounge- on a bet! I don't like it either.
In a Goldmine article there are such words: "Graham was the only CSN&Y member whose former group (not like the Byrds without Crosby and B.S. without Steven and Neil) couldn't be imagined performing at the Woodstock festival. The Hollies just hadn't that hippy potential without Graham. That's why he left.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You know the Hollies weren't very hippy and I don't hold that against them but they had a better sense of melody than the other 2 bands mention and had more top 10 hits too. My memory can remember Bus Stop and want to hear it more than any of the latter 2 bands hits....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Thanks beowulven ...I just picked up the remastered Woodstock CD's ... History proves that this was an uneven set that they shouldn't have even released. I love when Crosby tells the audience to "be quite" who the fuck i(at that time) is he.
Hahahahahahahahahaha! Dumbest statement I've ever read on youube! Who cares if Sands recorded it first? Her version while okay, is a snoozefest compared to the Hollies take...which was the big hit. Hahahahahahahaha!
Love the cross vocal harmonies of Graham Nash & Alan Clarke. They named themselves after Buddy Holly, but this song shows traces of The Shadows & American surf music & while the vocals are totally different, the drumming & guitar work reminds me of a Midnight Oil tune. Great song.

Like the Hollies, HE was awesome. .

@scunnered74 I am a CSN fan - we owe the best of CSN to the Nash-era Hollies

@NewHopeNashFan amen to that, somebody who doesnt think that nash was the makeweight of the band. i think he was the heart of csn

You know the Hollies weren't very hippy and I don't hold that against them but they had a better sense of melody than the other 2 bands mention and had more top 10 hits too. My memory can remember Bus Stop and want to hear it more than any of the latter 2 bands hits....

Absolutely agreed.

Thanks beowulven ...I just picked up the remastered Woodstock CD's ... History proves that this was an uneven set that they shouldn't have even released. I love when Crosby tells the audience to "be quite" who the fuck i(at that time) is he.

Thank you, I thought I was the only one who noticed...

Hahahahahahahahahaha! Dumbest statement I've ever read on youube! Who cares if Sands recorded it first? Her version while okay, is a snoozefest compared to the Hollies take...which was the big hit. Hahahahahahahaha!

Are these boys not well ahead of their time? The video and the casualness in front of the cameras prove that The Hollies were/are cool for the ages!

I like Linda Ronstadt's version of this song, but the Hollies are so incredible. I didn't know they had done it first. Thanks for posting!

Love the cross vocal harmonies of Graham Nash & Alan Clarke. They named themselves after Buddy Holly, but this song shows traces of The Shadows & American surf music & while the vocals are totally different, the drumming & guitar work reminds me of a Midnight Oil tune. Great song.
