There is another video tape of that game that I made. The shot was not taken before the clock ran out. A ref. is shown waving the shot as no good. He was the ref that was on that side of the court. I have been taping games for many years
Give the refs credit for doing thier job tough call, but they got it right ...
you think an official wants to put himself in harm's way after making a huge call like that? what do you expect him to do, stand there and challenge spartanburg fans to fight him? 3 officials discussed the play and they made a call that crushed thousands of fans. you think that makes him a coward? the cowardly thing to do would be to let the shot count if you thought it shouldn't count.
I'm from Wisconsin and have no interest in who won. That said, that shot was off in time. Kinda cowardly for the refs to wave it off as they are running out of the gym, too.
ppl saying they would have lost anyway with or without the buzzer because he walked are WRONG due to the fact they didnt call walk, a lot of calls go unnoticed so YES they would have won because he clearly got the ball off in time
um he took two dribbles, ther is no way that was a walk dude get over yourself, it was really close wether or not he got it off walking was not the issue buddy
i love it that this shot didnt count. spartanburg got through against hillcrest thanks to the men and one woman in black and white shirts..that upper state semi final game was the biggest load i had ever seen. worst officiated game EVER. and im neither a hillcrest or spartanburg fan i was chosen to announce the game. and also spartanburg has the most obnoxious fans ever
but seriously it didnt count. you may feel as thou it should have counted (which it didnt because the clock started late and he traveled) but it definatley did not count
the shot definately got off in time. Pause the clip at :05. The ball is out of his hands and if you look to the top left of the screen, the backboard isn't lit up.
or i can just look at the clock bc it didnt start late.
p.s.- If you havent heard of Christian Latner (played for duke and made a crazy buzzer shot) he actually took 2 dribbles and did a turn around fader in 1.2 seconds... so it is easily possible to do it in 1.7
First of all, you need to do some research before posting such diarrhea. On the play you are talking about, there was 2.1 seconds left. Laettner took ONE dribble, then took the fadeaway. The clock appeared to have started on time, but even so, a still picture taken under the basket by a media photographer shows the ball out of his hands with 0.2 seconds remaining. Even if it started a fraction of a second late, he would have gotten it off in time.
nickfil...if you check the hand time of the Laettner shot from the ORIGINAL broadcast he should NOT have gotten the ball off. The clock started significantly late. No one likes to look at that because it is such a "great shot". The Point, however, is that there is human error in ALL sports. Not one of us could be an official and get every call right. The officials (at least an overwhelming majority) perform their job with integrity and the decision, even if questionable, should be respected.
(THE STORY) GOES THAT THE COACH OF THE SUMMERVILLE GREEN TEAM DIED THAT/THIS YEAR. HE WAS A FIREMAN AND DIED IN A HOUSE FIRE. THEY WANTED TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP FOR HIM, THE FANS IN THE STANDS EVEN WORE FIRMAN HAT AND THEY KEPT A FIREMAN HAT ON THE BENCH. CHECK SPORTCENTER.
I've seen it from many different perspectives and origially thought the ball was released in time, but slow motion replay from both the front AND the back (both backboards) showed that the light was on. I feel very bad for the school that lost, but I'm very happy that the refs did make the right call because this would have been a really big mistake if it wasn't.
The story behind it is really sad cuz the coach that told them since 8th grade that they were gonna win the Florida State HS basketball game died right before the season started. (Summerville Coach)
One of the local newspapers did a video analysis of the final play. From the moment he touched the ball from the moment the ball left his hands was 1.9 seconds. There was only 1.7 secoonds on the clock when the free throw was missed. Simpel math shows he did not get it off by 0.2. Had the time-keeper started the clock correctly, there would be no discussion as the refs would have been able to definitively waive it off. This is why the NBA officials have a button on their belt to start the clock.
I've watched this plenty of times. I don't see where he traveled and the ball was clearly out of his hands before the buzzer sounded. The timing for everything appeared to be right. Looks to me like Spartanburg was screwed

THEY WANTED TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP FOR HIM, THE FANS IN THE STANDS EVEN WORE FIRMAN HAT AND THEY KEPT A FIREMAN HAT ON THE BENCH. CHECK SPORTCENTER. I think the reff kinda were swayed to take back that game winning shot.
Besides, according to the definintion of travelling the player travelled A person can only take two steps in the act of passing or shooting This player took 3 Look up NCAA and NBA definition of travelling Kind of confusing definition, but clearly player travelled
Get a stop watch and start it when you think the player first touches the rebound and stop it when you think he releases the shot. 1.7 seconds to grab a rebound, dribble across the lane, turn right, dribble towards the 3 point line and shoot? I don't think so. ESPN has a replay that shows when the rebound was first touched. I tried the experiment and came up with 2.25 to 2.75 seconds. Regardless, it would suck to be involved in the last 3 seconds of this game. Great, Ballsy call!!!!
It's very hard to tell if the light went on or if the buzzer sounded before or after he let the ball go. But I will say this, I cannot find a single frame in which the ball is clearly out of his hands and the light is still off. Secondly, if you use your own timer and start it as soon as the ball is touched after the free throw, you can clearly see the time should have expired while the ball was still in his hands.
It took him well over 2 seconds to let go of the ball, that is very clear. The timer clearly started way too late after the ball was touched. And perhaps that's what made it so easy for the referees to call it no good after they talked it over.
I don't know what you're looking at but every frame of footage i see with the light off it's still in his hands. And the earliest frame i can find with the light on i can't tell where the hell the ball is. but it's not even the main point. the referees are allowed to not go by the timer if they think the times person messed up. which he/she clearly did. he had the ball for at least 2 seconds. try and refute it. you'll have to buy a watch in china to do that
