BEST ANSWER on this subject: I do not like to get in the habit of saying one style is better than others. In regards to karate as a sport-I believe tournament compeition, that while it has some benefits, it does create a mindset and habits that will not work for actual combat. I also agree that when you can not attck the joints, eyes, throat, fingers, groin, etc that a true martial artist would not be able to effectively use their style.
I got my 1st Dan in Shotokan years back when I was a wee nipper. I've now studied western boxing, I teach Muay Thai (20 years of training) and MMA, have 2 years of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu training and fight MMA. Belts don't mean jack. It's just a western thing so people can show they're (apparently) better than others and as a mark of progression.
It's fine if you can perform a kata, but do you know WHY you are doing all those techniques and what they're for? Answer that and you're learning.
Only one thing I disagree with you on: the belt/sash rank system isn't a western thing, came from the east and it was just meant how far you've progress in learning. But you're right, now it's being used by too many as a means to say "I'm better than you because of my belt." What is western is schools just having students do kata and not eventually explain it.
You mentioned MMA, what are your thoughts on guys like Machida, GSP, and Filho who have karate backgrounds?
Wherever it came from and for whatever reason it was introduced, I agree that waay too many schools use it to fast track black belts and pretend they're better than others. I also agree; learning a bunch of moves without understanding what they're for and why is just learning by numbers.
I'm fine with guys in MMA having Karate backgrounds, such as Machida and GSP; I think what they've done and where they're at speaks for itself! Take what works for you and discard what doesn't!
Very true, no argument there. What I was referring to was that the belt rank system in general is not a western construct. michaelwood2 claimed it the modern rank system was developed by westerners, which I'm sure you know it was Jigoro Kano, then adopted by other arts.
These days, many instructors are selling belts. I went back to my old shotokan school 10 years after I left. I was sickened to find people wearing brown and purple belt who could not even perform the lower belt Katas with any form or power. My sensei had sold out to selling belts for money, and therefor had subpar students.
During my first run in the school, I was easily winning competitions against black belts as an ORANGE BELT.
BELT RANK DOES NOT MATTER IN THE LONG RUN OF THE MARTIAL ARTIST.
I've studied martial arts for 17 years. I officially hold a Blue belt is Shotokan. What makes me any less skilled than a black belt?
The fact that I have studied various styles instead of just one? The fact that I don't know each and every Shotokan Kata? How about the fact that I can perform forms from various styles of Karate and Kung fu? Those that are so dead set that belt matters are only wrapped up in their own belt, and hate thinking that someone lower could be better than them.
learning martial arts isnt like riding bike, styles are different. mastering one style might be too much. You are asking wierd questions. what makes you less skilled then black belt......? i dont know depends who u compare. Black belt doesnt need to know all katas. Its not how many u know, it is how well u know.
this is great, I am sooooo glad to have run across it, I am testing for 1st kyu Black, what is the last Kata, after- Gojushiho -Dai, I can't seem to find this one for review. Thanks
xhaptic..lol the video was taped in the 80's..not 2006..Uploaded online by someone in 06 doesnt mean it was "produced" in 06 lol and yeah hes not that old, hes around early 60.
WTF the pants keep the pants up, the belt means rank. The guys who say rank doesnt mean anything, mean it doesnt mean anything to them. To us it means fuck you if you dont want rank.
You sound like you haven't been training for very long. Belt color means absolutely nothing in the long run. Ask any black belt worth his salt and he'll tell you.
It's all about your ability to apply everything you've learned. Not about a piece of cloth you have wrapped around your waist. Doesn't matter if you're 5th Dan or whatever, if you can't apply it, you're going to get your ass kicked.
Basic Dan Katas: Bassai-Dai, Jion, Empi, Kanku-Dai, Jitte
Further (hope i dont forget one): Bassai-Sho, Kanku-Sho, Jiin, Hangetsu, Sochin, Nijushiho, Chinte, Gojushiho-Sho, Gojushiho-Dai, Meikyo, Wankan, Gankaku and Unsu
Please don't mind the order, or the way I put them into classes...just the way i was taught...
Disregard. I just googled it. I was thinking of Nakayama. Interesting that I can't find the original comment I just replied to, which stated that the guy in the video was 10th dan.
There's no way this guy can be 10th dan though. 10th dan = grand master = founder.
If rank doesnt mean anything then why are you guys talking about it.Why did Kano crate them, and why is everyone wearing a belt, its not to keep your pants up. The belt is not for that its obvious it means something. To prove my point let me ask you, who would you rather be taught by. A white belt or a 7th Dan. Utter foolishness.
What Dan level you are does not matter, it only shows you've taken a test. Asking who I'd rather be taught by does not prove your point, it is flawed logic.
Now to prove MY point, let me ask you this- is it more significant to have a ranking system NOW than it was BEFORE it was created?
He only said "it's there to keep your pants up" metaphorically speaking, because it shows very little significance.
The funny thing is, people have been going back and forth on this forever, belts are part of what we do and if you guys dont care about tradition and culture. If you guys dont respect the masters that have come before you,if you dont wish to honor those who taught you and if you think that rank is not important. Then by all means go and do something other than martial arts. Because those of else who believe in what we do dont need to hear that crap.
So? We don't respect great martial artists because of rank. We respect them for what they have demonstrated and any advances they may have made, not because they've taken a test and gotten a number. How often do you hear someone marvel over how many notches someone has gotten on their belt?
You're right, belts are a part of what we do, but I guarantee you that any Japanese instructor who has trained mind and body their whole lives will laugh at you or ignore you.
All of my teachers are high ranked, they have been at it their whole lives. They are respected and known world wide they are 5th , 7th and 8th Dans and yeah they care about rank and you my friend have no idea what you are saying. Your rank is a reward of your efforts it speaks of what you know , who you are in the arts, where you come from and what your beliefs are, no its not just a belt,it is part of growing up.
Thats not important,I think its safe to say that anyone having rank cares about it, or else they would simply refuse to be promoted. Also you better believe that one who does have a high grade can kick some ass. People dont fight for 10 or 20 years and not learn anything.
You're right, they don't train for 10 to 20 years without learning anything. I don't refuse promotion. Rank only shows progression. Think about it. A 1kyu who has been training for 10 years can still be on level with a shodan who has been training for 4-5 years. Rank shows you've progressed, but it is not a clear indication of how good you are at martial arts. Look at the matchups in tournaments.
Also to answer your question, Shotokan, 10 years. I don't train to 'fight'. I train to train.
ummmmm are junro katas shotokan? cas i dont see them here

@zfeckman2011 Yes and no...the Junro kata were created by Tetsuhiko Azai for his branch of Shotokan, JKS. They aren't part of the JKA curriculum

With all the respect. Originally there were only two belt colors: black for the instructor, and white for the disciple. It's as easy as that.

5 Heian
3 Tekki
Basic Dan Katas: Bassai-Dai, Jion, Empi, Kanku-Dai, Jitte
