hi Mr. Nomiclas----nice little note----be cool have a beer and continue to rock out. now I must salute you because you are a Ventures fan. back when I was young none of my friends liked them. they thought, no lyrics, no good. tonight I might just freeze a beer or two and crank them up.---have a good 2012----

you had it much worse than me being in the 101st airborne infantry and being there in 1968. you were more of a hero type of participant and I was just there. I was in a trans. unit in Chu-Lai and only left the place 3 times to go to Da Nang for beer, steaks and movies. i tip my beer mug to you Mr. Wilcarr, have a great 2012 and beyond.--as for the Ventures, try "caravan"!

@galaxybeing101 you know,we all were there and some had it tougher than others.YOU WERE STILL THERE!don't worry about what you did,we're all nam bro's and sis's.i was 69-70 with 82nd 5months and then to the 1st Cav for 7 months.82nd was 9 to 5 with the HQ brigade supply.the 1st Cav was right into the jungle and even into Cambodia.i saw pretty much both sides of the deal and i loved being in the Cav.everyday was a challenge and it made the experience one i love to this minute!
I never considered these guys as a "surf" band, just damn good guitar players. Only a few of their songs are surf related. I did my last nine months of service in Nam after they shipped me out of Germany. Got shot at on the bunker line 2-3 nights, we shot into the woods, rangers checked things out in the morning to see if we hit any Vietcong. came home in 1971, now it,s 40 years later. navy war movies are more interesting, especially with submarines.
@galaxybeing101 // heck of a ride in 68 my friend Vietnam vet 101st Abn infantry Hue-Phu-Bai. When I came home nothing was the same again and was no longer a child. I still loved the Beach Boys and Ventures but they were different now after all the suffering and death.
@overbrookXXX ~ That's a good question. I grew up in SoCal (graduated H.S. in 1965) and surf music dominated the L.A. airwaves by the end of 1961 and kept right on trucking thru the end of 1963. Sadly, the wave that got 'em all began in the Fall of 1963 and it was BRITISH. I would imagine that surf band music in, say, Terre Haute, Indiana probably came, and went, within a matter of days ~ eh?
Wow--This was one of the first 45 rpm records i ever bought as a 50's teenager, and played it to death. Great to jive to. Just bought it on CD compil, Some how, the rawness has gone--along with my hair.
If you are interested in this song in a more refined version, look up the Four Aces version, or better yet (if you can find it) Mel Torme's version. I can't find Mel's and would love to have it if anyone can help.
i agree with you Tony.....i listened to surf music from its inception and from 58" on link wray was played with other tunes considered surf type........i have the beach boys "surfin' " on X label and i think it came out in 60 or 61.......us old surfer types had to listen to other songs besides ones that had the word SURF in it.........from huntington beach we were probably classified as low rider surfers, but we also played doo wop and rock a billy too surf music is a blend.....
@TonyLyndellWilliams I agree that Link Wray's music isn't Surf. While his music didn't identify with surf culture at the time (which had barely hit the mainstream at this time), his INFLUENCE on the upcoming surf music movement- with reverb and 600 SPM guitar playing- is not arguable. He was a trailblazer for reverb/surf. His daughter posts here on YT, maybe she'll come by and confirm. :) I saw Dick Dale live about a month ago and there were Link Wray shirts in the crowd. So cool. Carry on
My girl (Kathy) and I saw these guys, in June 1969, at the old Melodyland (an "in the round" venue) in Anaheim, California. Within a week I had left for Vietnam (drafted) and although we were engaged at that time ~ she sent me a letter in early August '69 telling me she just couldn't wait.
At the time, an instrumental band - especially wedded to the "Surfer Sound" - had to look for any catchy melody and try to fit it into their style. The Ventures were very gifted at this and established no boundaries as to where they might look. I wonder what they might have done with "A Theme to A Summer Place". Then again, I made myself laugh with the thought.
I really enjoyed this song and it was in my head when I was shipped to Vietnam. I would always think back to those days in San Fran when I was in the jungle. It kept me going. Don't enlist folks!
@SuperSweaterVest Glad you made it back to be living history like these boys music. I got sent to Northern Ireland and ended up hating myself not anybody else. Peace brother.
@wilcarr1 Well, if you want to get technical, I never got a scratch, I didn't die, lost no limbs or eyes. Nothing.
I was talking about SERVING in Viet Nam from my own personal experience, not the results of war.
You talk about 59,000 dead and many more wounded? During my first 'Nam tour there were more deaths on the highway during the holidays than we had all year in the zone.
@SuperSweaterVest 'Don't enlist Folks' yeah, but do they ever listen ? ALL war is about grabbing someone elses Gaff, and making VAST amounts of money from the millions of limbs and corpses left behind. Today---the same dunb ass kids who 'VOLUNTEER' to join the mincemeat party--do NOT have my sympathy. In fact, it seems to me, watching the gutted parents and young wives holding babies, (the dead man never got to see), telling the viewer how 'he always wanted to join'. WTF--just a selfish idiot !
@MrDaiseymay <---Bravo, -well stated my friend, --yet our jewZionist warmongering Rothschild/Rockefeller et'al Bank'ster-mafia masters know that as long as there are naively ignorant young men full of testosterone and eager to exercise it, --that the evil powers that be shall always be inane War, and those whom zealously urge us to fight for the glory of dying or becoming horribly maimed for their insatiable greed & usury; --after all it is necessary for the munitions industry.!!!
If The Ventures were wrong to do an instrumental cover of "Perfidia," then Dick Dale & The Del-Tones were wrong for their instrumental cover of "Miserlou?" What about Johnny & The Hurricanes' "Red River Rock?" I don't think any of the artists were simply grasping at straws, with their instrumental arrangements...there had to be something there for the song, already, or they probably would have picked another.
Still speaking about video: watch?v=-HOycOO4SGw - The orchestra strings start at 44 seconds. Pay no attention to the loud male voice. Listen to all the song, feel where the chords go and when you start listening to the female back vocals it's magical. At the end it gives off that Cinema or Epic Movie feeling. It's beautiful. I wish there were an instrumental only version, but I doubt it very much.
Unless you get it from the original studio who keeps the original recording.
Yeah, thanks for all the responses, sleep walk was a good one, I listened to this one and liked it: watch?v=T4tPGljkR_w&feature=related. And while at it, I found this one but with a loud singing (unfortunately). The orchestra is a little up-beat but the chords and the back vocals give this cinematic Epic movie feeling. So yeah, I prefer it orchestra style with an abundance of instruments if possible. I know it's very hard and rare, it's ok. Here's the video: watch?v=-HOycOO4SGw
@barrygioportmorien1 beach boys came after the instrumental stuff by dick dale, ventures, chantays, tornados and others. some will say the beach boys ruined the genre. i grew up listening to both, and like all of it.
@TonyLyndellWilliams How can you say that? Link Wray was a pioneer of instrumental rock n roll loaded with reverb and twangy guitar, which essentially was the early form of surf music. Your comparison is lacking any support and really makes no sense. Link was a pinnacle for surf music and you should know that if you grew up listening to the stuff. Dick Dale, The Lively Ones, and many other 60s surf bands all covered Link Wray songs and many still do today. Know your rock n roll history man.
@Blahblobify I got a Dad who was born in 54 and he claims that he didn't hear any surf until after the Beatles. Maybe it was a regional thing until the mid 60s?
@caveman735 Surf culture means nothing in Michigan. As the book on Rock and roll history points out, what could surf mean to people who didn't live near an ocean.
@DimensionsofChange I see your point. I live on the California coast and see people surfing everyday. Perfidia was not originally a 'surf' tune". It was a Latin tune that has been arainged and played by many different artist including Glenn Miller,Linda Ronstat, and to many more to mention. I suggest you listen to their version's of the tune, and you'll see. No one knowes who "invented" "surf music", it just happened. Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Beach Boy's, The Chantay's? Who knowes.
@caveman735 don't get me wrong. It sounds cool (Heck Zappa did surf songs), I've just been curious about the whole thing, having been born in the 90s and living in the mid west.
I believe the Cuban great Carmon Moran did the vocal of this first, then Glen miller on the instrumental...The Ventures keep this timeless tune in tact by playing it at each concert they do in Japan, U.S. & Canada.
Here's another example in Italian (I only like the first 1 minute and 9 seconds) after that the songs is invaded with too much sound and looses it's acoustic delight. See if you agree: here: watch?v=LrO6gqIx454
Forgot to mention, on the mellow example, to hear the solo right away you have to jump to 1 minute and thirty seconds. But the song is mellow with minor chords throughout most of the song. The only major ones are at the chorus featuring beautiful female back vocals. I like when the orchestra plays without the voice!!
This is what I mean, see if you don't get a chill down your spine. Imagine you are in your room thinking about the past, the lights are out, you are tired just before sleep, (lay your head on the pillow, close your eyes, relax and you listen to this), here's the video of an example mellow solo with minor chords I was talking about (unfortunately the guy has to sing after the solo, but has a soft romantic voice (if you know of an American one let me know, cause I never knew: watch?v=HA1y4cbHQHA
Wow, so many kind responses, thank you! I asked because I know one in particular but he is Brazilian and sings in portuguese: his name is "Agnaldo Timoteo" here's a happy one from him: watch?v=0YEfcWkZprw - listen to the instrumental and the solo later how it makes you wanna move to the beat. He has mellow ones, but he sings in them. But the instruments and back vocals are so beautiful. like the vocals in those old epic movies. I'll upload a mellow minus chord example too and let you know!
@Strawberry7Lynn The Ventures have written more than a hundred originals (probably many more than that), and had many chart toppers in Japan with original compositions, which remain standards in east Asia to this day. I like the Shads too.
This is amazing really! but does anyone know of any slow, sad tunes with minor chords to it? I'd like some tunes that I can turn on before bed to relax, rather than turn on this get up and dance kind of rock rhythm. Does anyone know of an instrumental band or instrumental songs 60s or 50s? it could be country style too, but no singing, thanks
@1200com Look up Perfidia by the band Cafe Tacuba. It's instrumental and a lot darker than this version. Also anything you can find from Cafe Tacuba's album Reves is very soothing
@1200com Glenn Miller Moonlight Serenade, Morris Stoloff Moonglow & Theme From Picnic, Earl Grant Ebb Tide, Glenn Miller Sunrise Serenade. There many more find one and it will lead to others.
These guys are one reason I got into a band and Mel Taylor is the big reason i became a drummer. The entire surf sound is awesome. I'm glad to see that the music has survived and is being kept alive by young, local bands all around the country.
To those who say this is an old Glenn Miller song.....he did record a version of it....but according to Wikipedia ""Perfidia" (Spanish for "perfidy", as in faithless, treacherous or false) is a popular song written by Alberto Domínguez [1] (19111975), a Mexican composer and arranger born in the state of Chiapas, about love and betrayal"

I believe the Cuban great Carmon Moran did the vocal of this first, then Glen miller on the instrumental...The Ventures keep this timeless tune in tact by playing it at each concert they do in Japan, U.S. & Canada.
Thanks for the upload!

1200com 1 year ago
This is what I mean, see if you don't get a chill down your spine. Imagine you are in your room thinking about the past, the lights are out, you are tired just before sleep, (lay your head on the pillow, close your eyes, relax and you listen to this), here's the video of an example mellow solo with minor chords I was talking about (unfortunately the guy has to sing after the solo, but has a soft romantic voice (if you know of an American one let me know, cause I never knew: watch?v=HA1y4cbHQHA
1200com 1 year ago
Wow, so many kind responses, thank you! I asked because I know one in particular but he is Brazilian and sings in portuguese: his name is "Agnaldo Timoteo" here's a happy one from him: watch?v=0YEfcWkZprw - listen to the instrumental and the solo later how it makes you wanna move to the beat. He has mellow ones, but he sings in them. But the instruments and back vocals are so beautiful. like the vocals in those old epic movies. I'll upload a mellow minus chord example too and let you know!

This is a real old standard from the 30s and 40s. The Ventures gave it that "surf's up" sound!

Syzygy60 1 year ago
cover my ass they were originals
Syzygy60 1 year ago
The Ventures were more quantity than quality and did mostly covers, including this one, which is a very good interpretation of the tune.
Unfortunately - partially due to this band - North America missed out on Brit band "the Shadows"
Strawberry7Lynn 1 year ago
@Strawberry7Lynn We did not in Mexico, we had both Shadows and Ventures and more that you guys in USA
harfuch1 1 year ago
@Strawberry7Lynn The Ventures have written more than a hundred originals (probably many more than that), and had many chart toppers in Japan with original compositions, which remain standards in east Asia to this day. I like the Shads too.

Mel Taylor was the right drummer for the the Ventures. He could blow some lids in his day.

@penta15786 this was Howie Johnson on drums. Taylor came about 3-4 years after this.

This whole album was awsome. I don't know why we don't have instrumental groups these days. There were several in the early 60's.

@jimkeith50 It takes real musical ability to from all concerned to form an instrumental group. That's pretty rare.

So there....IT IS a Mexican tune.
