Brings back some great memories. Harry Morgan always portrayed the same character: Harry Morgan! He was one of the lucky ones who was allowed to have his personality shine through his characters. Thanks for your work, Harry!
I was 10 years old in 1962, and use to watch this on TV. It's where I first became familiar with Harry Morgan. I followed him to televisions Dragnet, then Mash, and several other movie appearances. Today (Wednesday 12-07-2011), it was reported he had died at the age of 96...WOW! Ironic isn't it...today is the 70 year anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor! I can just hear Colonel Potter..."War is Hell". Rest in Peace and thanks for the many years of swell entertainment!
This was a really popular show for a few years. While Harry Morgan had a long career, Cara Williams didn't do much after this, reportedly because she was hard to work with.
I have fond memories of this and it's predecessor, "December Bride". It is kind of weird, though, to see Joe Mantell (an Academy Award nominee for his role in "Marty") in a sitcom.
Even Harry Morgan has stated this was not a very good series. To use an electronics analogy: the components were high quality, but the circuit was poorly designed. And incidentally--once and for all for wiki and all--whether or not the cancellation of this show had anything to do with Lucy coming back, the fact remains that Pete & Gladys did NOT occupy the same time slot vacated by I Love Lucy (Mon 9P) or taken over by The Lucy Show (Mon 8:30). P&G spent its two seasons on Monday nights a 8PM.
When I heard that one guy ask the other guy(@ 4min:27sec in this video), "What's this new Guinea bit?" and the other guy replied, "It's New Jersey!", I thought that really sounded like a stereotype, especially nowadays it would and raise some eyebrows to boot.
Yes. In fact Carnation was the sponsor I remembered. I'd forgotten about Goodyear and Kellogg's being sponsors as well. It'l like these broadcasts from 40 years ago have come back from the Either!
What a great show Pete&Gladys superb followup to December Bride. 1962 all over again. harry morgan&Cara williams were great. too bad it didnt go beyond 2 years. lets talk about this not intern Showtime wuth Don Ameche (tho that was great) Im a tv film historian. i knew Spring Byington amng 900 others,. i have a website on stars&films&tv of yesteryear. PETE&GLADYS great show great cast, we need more like em. innocent funny& well scripted not like the junk we see today on tv.Sorry folks.TOMK
Don's series, where he observed and narrated circus acts all over the world, sitting in with the audience during their performances, was "INTERNATIONAL SHOWTIME" (1961-'65), which was a fixture on NBC's Friday night schedule. It spawned a thetarical film featuring Ameche, "Rings Around the World" (1966).
Good memory! Don Ameche was the emcee of International Showtime on NBC between 1961-65. He would introduce acts from various circuses from around Europe, featuring a different circus each week.
Also...Cara Williams once played "Raggedy Ann" on a Red Skelton's Christmas special from 195o's. He was Freddy the Freeloader, and, someone dropped a Raggedy Ann doll, which came to life, and they ice skated together. It is an excellent episode, now out on DVD!
Cara Williams was married to the grandfather of Drew Barrymore before he married Drew's mother; rumor had it that Cara had a hot temper--lol--and I recall one of her last roles, as a big drinker in doctor's wives.
WOW....... haven't seen this since it was on the air! Most people don't even remember this show now. Harry Morgan was a gem! I'm watching him in a movie on TCM right now, that's what prompted me to do a search for this show.
Thanks so much for posting this! When I was five years old, I adored Pete and Gladys. I loved her puffy skirted dresses and high heels. She was so perky and beautiful to me. It was great fun to see them again after all these years. I too would love it if the series were re-released.
I love "Pete and Gladys". I agree that Cara Williams is a very talented actress that should be remembered more. I recently purchased an 18-episode set of this series which I am enjoying immensely. This series should be put back into syndication for more people to see.
Hi Bruce. I went to ioffer and clicked under "Pete and Gladys" then clicked 18 episodes of "Pete and Gladys" with 2 eps of "December Bride". The seller is honest and his product good. The series comes on 5 DVD-R discs in plain paper sleeves. The episodes seen on youtube are included in the set along with the original pilot film titled "For Pete's Sake" and the pilot film for "December Bride". The price for the set is $14.95 plus shipping. I hope you enjoy it. Scott.
Bob Schiller & Bob Weiskopf were the head writers of this series, and they often "borrowed" routines they had originally created for Lucille Ball when they wrote for "I LOVE LUCY" and "THE LUCILLE BALL-DESI ARNAZ SHOW" {aka "THE LUCY-DESI COMEDY HOUR"} between 1955 and '60. When they returned to Lucy to co-write "THE LUCY SHOW" (after "PETE & GLADYS" was cancelled in 1962), one of the first things she said to them was, "You gave my best material to that OTHER redhead!".
"PETE & GLADYS" was on CBS' Monday night schedule at 8pm(et), right after "TO TELL THE TRUTH". The Carnation Company [Carnation Evaporated Milk, Non-Fat Dry Milk, etc.] was the "alternate sponsor" at the time...
It's unfortunate that she was so often compared with Lucille Ball. I really liked her better, and her routine in this clip where she's describing Pete's "adventure" shows she had something special of her own.
It's also unfortunate that she faded from sight after her eponymous 1964-65 series, which was very much ahead of its time, as it reached a resolution in the final episode. That was rare at a time when Gilligan was left on the island, and Uncle Martin was still stranded on Earth when those shows were cancelled.
I too watched "Pete & Gladys" on CBS' weekday morning roster. It aired at 10:30 a.m. EST, to my recollection, just after "I Love Lucy," was replaced by "The Real McCoys," then "The Beverly Hillbillies," followed by "Andy Of Mayberry" & "The Dick Van Dyke Daytime Show," the latter two reverting to their prime time titles when the prime time runs ended.
You may buy episodes of "P & G," what are loosely called "public domain," at bygonevideo & iOffer, putting in the dotcom.
Great memories. Harry Morgan has been a part of my TV years. I loved this show.

3:15 to 3:24, Gladys does an impersonation of Japanese speech. Can you imagine the uproar if that happened today?
Oh wait. Rosie O'Donnell did the same thing. Oh well. She's a liberal lesbian, so no big deal. But if a conservative did that? Hoo boy!

I always looked forward to "Pete and Gladys" coming on. Can't remember what night it was on. One of my favorites.

It wsa on Monday nights at 8 p.m. It wsa canceled when CBS picked up THE LUCY SHOW for that same time slot.
While I liked this show, many seemed ready for the return of the "real" red head-even if she did dye her hair.

According to Wikipedia, her name at birth (in Brooklyn) was Bernice Kamiat, and she is of Austrian/Romanian descent.

Her father (my uncle Ben), was from Lemberg (now known as Lviv), in Galicia, Austria-Hungary, at the time he left there. Lviv is now in Ukraine.
