The saddest part of it all is that we have not learned anything. Greedy people like Stan Polley are the revered 1% and they are ruining this country. They do so while hiding behind weak self-rationalization and poor defense arguments about capitalism.
Interesting that Joe Smith (the guy who signed Badfinger and also signed Bonnie Raitt to Warner Bros (he also got her deal with Capitol in 1988)) left Warner Bros for Elektra/Asylum in early 1975 as the WB vs Badfinger/Polley case started. Ironically Joe would sign Badfinger to Elektra which released Airwaves in 1979 before poor sales got the band dropped (Elektra/Asylum was pretty much all about Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, The Cars, Warren Zevon and Queen (for the US) by 78/79)
Whoa so upsettin. Pure genius talented man Pete ham hung himself. I hope the wankers who ripped him off felt guilty. what a waste of a great talent and human being
Even though I know the story of Pete's suicide as well as any Badfinger fan might know it, it still chokes me up to think he was driven to the point of such despair that he would see this as his only option.
Such a tragic, senseless loss.. Such a loss in terms of wondering what great music he could have written .
Stan Polley will get his due, if not already. Badfinger will always be in my heart and when I die, My Brother-in-law will play Baby Blue on his guitar at my funeral, I'm a cancer survivor. Cindy, Pittsburgh
Pete Ham should have taken Stan Polley with him. sounds like that was the plan at first. those guys got robbed of so much because of a few bad decisions and a dishonest bastard. sad story indeed.
Pete Ham was most definitely a class act. My heart still hurts to think they were so close and yet so far from the elusive gold ring. Perhaps it's what happens to many of us.
RIP Peter. May blessings still come to your family from the karma you sent round. You will always be missed.
"Bad management" is an understatement! Polley was a shark (just like Allen Klein, who came into Apple to salvage the label, but he was craftier about his greed). Why was this guy allowed to keep plying his trade after his investigation by the Senate in '71? Lou Christie, Al Kooper, etc. ditched Polley when their suspicions about Polley came to light. Pete Ham was right : Polley was a soulless, selfish bastard who used this great band for his own purposes and destroyed them in the process.
Badfinger was a tremendous band that I followed as soon as I heard "Come And Get It" on the radio. I bought every album. All of the Apple albums will soon be re-released. Let's buy them and salute this great rock and roll band once again.
Joey Molland said they wanted to stay with Apple? "Apple Of My Eye" by Pete Ham is about the fact the band knew they had to leave Apple, but he was grateful for what they did. That was a dying record label by that time. I can't stand reading interviews with Molland because there is so much bull in them. Found a blog - search GOOGLE using words Badfinger & book & blog - fantastic insights into Mollland and Badfinger
Polley was a screwball. He deserves the empty pockets & no money he has today ..since he is no longer with us,....ideally he would be in hell and being punished.
Joey Molland claims they all wanted to stay with Apple and Pete wrote about it. No. Pete wrote in the lyrics "we were the children and we've overgrown." Apple was falling apart by 1972. No way they'd resign with Apple at that time. Read the book on Badfinger. Gives you all the facts.
Joey not close to Pete. This is what his wife, Kathie Molland said in interviews. Doubt Joey even realized "Take It All" was about him. So I'm not surprised he misinterpreted Pete's song.
Such great talent, yet destroyed by bad management, suicides, etc. R.I.P Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Mike Gibbins. I wish Joey Molland god speed. But that motherfucker stan polley "ugggh", I hope that piece of shit dies a horrible fuckin death and goes to hell for all fuckin eternity.
Joey Molland laments that Warner Brothers pulled Wish You Were Here off the market. Yet it should be noted he bailed on the band before that happened. And others say it was because his desire to take over the band leadership (Gibbins). Read the book: Without You: The Tragic Story Of Badfinger. Amazing story...
exactly, he did do that according to reports. However, we listening to accounts from several sources and we were not there. How I wish I was, during WYWH
Badfinger deserved to be extremely successful... a formality. Many fans would wait and wonder why another hit wasnt being released. It was frustrating, as i can remember, their songs were just incredible, amazing, particularly the songs of Pete Ham. And so, no songs were being released. Unfortunately, bad management caused all their woes. Such a shame ..a 5 star band
Thank you, JulieSpecial3, for this video. Here we have Badfingers' grandest - greatest - most tragic - mistake. Leaving Apple Records and signing with Warner Brothers.
I am a big Badfinger fan (especially of Pete Ham) and it breaks my heart to watch this part of the documentry. He was a musical genius. What a loss to the music.
It reminds me of the line in the song "Vincent" by Don MacLean....."This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you". So true, Pete. So true.
That's why all 4 were represented Trevor, 2 out of their own mouths. Besides, if you knew anything you'd know that Pete was the creative force behind the inception of the band.
What I do know is that the creative force YOU defend killed himself so we will never know what might have been will we? Peter Ham wasn't a solo artist you see, the band he was in performed his songs same as they performed all members songs so let's enjoy the music.
Bob Jackson, Gaynor, Anne, Bev, John Ham, your comments about Pete are so passionate and eloquent . Thanks so much for telling Pete's story from the perspective of those who knew him so well. Thanks for keeping his memory alive.
Both tracks are composed and sung by Joey Molland from the Badfinger & Wish You Were Here albums on the Warner Brothers label - the 1st one titled 'Give It Up' and the latter is 'Got To Get Out of Here'.
Rock and Roll Contract from the album Head First which finally saw the light of day 25 years after it was made. Wish you were Here and Head First are great albums.
"Over You" which is from Tommmy's posthumous CD of demos(with Rod Roach) also titled Over You(The Final Tracks). Also can be found as the last track on the CD included with the most recent edition of Dan Matovina's excellent book - "The Tragic Story of Badfinger".
