  • Hi Gavin, do you find the battery grip is useful on a days shoot, or does it make the camera too heavy?

  • thank you for the nice tutorials, there's a lot I can learn from you.

  • I like the pictures... But a little to dark and youre not using a lenshood..?!

  • the last shot of your daughter in the poppy field is great Gavin!!

  • Love the last picture of your daughter. Really nice!

  • very nice video! I was just shooting one session in poppy fields early in the morning, but had many difficulties with settings, too bright, too dark, too many shadows on model's face even though it was 6 in the morning, sun was already very agresive and also the redness of poppies sometimes was too intense.. any suggestions on settings when shooting in these conditions? i do not think you mentioned any of those in the video, like aperture, ISO, exposure.. i just heard shutter speed:)

  • Good information. I'll send my friends (beginning photographers) to your site. I love the off camera flash demo. Really useful stuff.

  • you're so amazing sir! thank you for posting those videos and educating us non-photographer but so interested to learn about it,,

  • Noticed there are 4 dislikes of this video. Boy O boy theres just no pleasing some people. I for one think they are great and have enjoyed them tremendiously. Thanks

  • daaaamn! you are good

  • You do great work Gavin..I'd probably kill to have that field at my disposal.

  • The field of poppies remind me of the Heartshape Box video by Nirvana

  • Wonderful videos and beautiful photos. I've been searching for a way to achieve the colors that you have in your photos but I can't find anything. Could you explain what's involved with your photo editing a bit? I know that's sort of like asking the magician for the secret but I could use the help. I have tried using adjustment layers and playing with saturation but it generally looks too fake. Thanks.

  • Gavin. Great videos, all of them!

What's the name of the music and artist who you use in this and your other videos?

  • Well, I like your videos BUT i feel this one is a commercial for Canon. disappointed

  • Sorry, I have to keep writing comments, because you are amazing. So clear voice and explanation ever! You have a beautiful daughter!!!

Best luck, sunny greetings from Finland.

  • Thanks for tips

  • calssical photography you do thankyou very much

  • Thank you.

    That was really helpful.

You explained so cleary, and well.

The poppy flower field looked so beautiful. How could you resist.

  • Gavin, i am having trouble capturing the "intense" colors as of the image @ 3:25, now is the lens to blame for that or my being a noob ? I have seen exceptional images with the exact equipment as mine ... has your image at 3:25 had any post processing done .. any specific settings i should be looking at e.g white balance .. i shoot with a canon 550D, mostly in Av or Tv mode, but just don't get good colors. Any tips would be appreciated. Stunning pictures and pretty helpful videos by the way.

  • @salmanz8

I have a canon 550d too. The quality of your pictures depends way more on the lighting than the equipment. Therefore you can only take great looking pictures when the light is right. As seen in this example it's a good idea to have a flash gun so you can make the right light yourself. The colors in the pictures are also something that creates great looking images. For instance a red or green color tone will usually make the image look better and more interesting than a grey color tone

  • Gavin,

needless to say incredible presentation skills!, not only the way you explain things also the quality od editing ,are just amazing, we never get bored and understand almost everything perfectly! way to go and god bless you for sharing your wisdome!

  • Hi Gavin, I find all of your videos most helpful. Thanks for taking the time. One question... Which month was it when you took these, I want to make a note in my diary to hunt down that field this year. I am based in Horsham so its quite local for me.

  • SUBSCRIBED. thank you

  • you're awesome! thanks!

  • love that lens USM

  • ur vids r really good u should make this on tv program!!!!

  • Gavin, Why are you not using a lens hood? Is there a reason why you do or do not use a lens hood?

  • Gavin, the photo at 3:25 in your video shows a beautifull background blur behind your lovely daughter. Is that pure because of the large aperture or did that take any post processing?

  • @muusers 3:22 that is...

  • that does seem like its been blured a bit on photoshop, cause in the next photo the hils look sharper, these videos are awesome.

  • Well maybe the next photo was taken at a smaller aperture... Too bad youtube doest let you see EXIF files.

  • Done in camera using f4. Many of the images are also on Flickr, there's a link in the video info. Flickr shows all the Exif data which you might find helpful.

  • @PhotoGavin The fact you show the EXIF data is incredibly helpful. I am noticing that I personally shoot a little too wide an aperture, especially after being able to view your exif data. Thank you very much! I'm learning a lot.

  • @PhotoGavin Unfortunately there are no exif data on flickr for the pictures of this video. Or do I need to have an account at flickr to see the exif data of your pictures?

  • you're great, 10x

  • Hi, thanks for this amazing video. What I wanted to ask is what basic editing you used in photoshop after this session. I like the colour tone that you gave to these photos. hope that someone can help me.

  • i can only say awesome video. The pictures are amazing

  • WOW! I love the vignetting effect on the photos, thanks for making these fantastic videos.

  • i enjoyed this video so much--informative and entertaining at the same time. Wow. Thanks!

  • wat dslr u use?

  • it's something from Canon, that's all I know ;)

  • @PoppyRoxxx Canon of course! If you want to take wonderful images, you have to use Canon. If you want just "so so" images, then use Nikon :-)

  • if i had 6 thumbs i'd put it up all for ya! =]

  • Amazing photography here. Those photos are stunning. Great work, nice vid.

  • Thanks for sharing such lovely pics

  • hi gavin!! nice pictures but I have one question may sound stupid but I'm new with photography why went you take your pictures you don't use any flash? I watch some other videos were they say always use a flash even if you taking pictures outside! can you explain how that work (using flash) thanks for you help

  • you only may want to use flash in sunny days whenever u want to fill the darker areas in a photo... most of the time it is used in portraits...

Its just like a fill in.

  • Thank you very much for this video and all your videos! It helps me a lot :-)

  • the darker area in the upper right/left and sides of your photos are due to the camera setting or through phtotoshop? it made your photos very dramatic. thanks

  • They were added in Photoshop (Camera RAW)

  • hi Gavin, wonderful works..how do you make your photos a little darker yet nice detail, is it in the camera setting (what particular setting) or is it edited in photoshop. i find it very dramatic when its not too bright. thanks.

  • It's funny how BBoreq and oreoboy here comes to sites like these, leaves negative comments yet they don't have any videos or photos to show their own works.... why can't you just be thankful that someone is actually taking time to teach. Better yet, why not make your own vid?

  • Are the photos we see unedited?oreocookieoreo, what are you on about?trying to teach this guy how to take photos haha,he is a expert you can see that,

  • makes me realize how much I still have to learn! And my favorite photos were the one with your little girl in them... absolutely lovely!

  • Beautiful, I enjoy watching and following your work..Also Beautiful daughter you have as well.

  • few years ago while taking a photography class we went to a poppy field to take photos, places like this are uncommon around here. Divided in two groups, mine on the field and the other on top of a hill the photoshoot began. After few minutes the teacher started yelling at us from up the hill, without realizing it we destroy half the field with our walking and stepping on the flowers, it was a popular field among photographer and we ruin it!!! Something to keep in mind :-)

  • Fabulous photos Gavin, this video inspired me to look for a field of Poppies for myself, found one, though not as impressive as this one, got some lovely shots. Thanks for the tips.

  • Fantastic. I've been watching many of your Photoshop tutorials, but this photography video was really helpful as well!

Thanks for the great videos. :)

  • tutorial as always great.

  • very nice photos you have taken there, thank you for your video.

  • just gorgeous! i hope i can take pix like that soon. im still learning how to edit and take pix with my new camera. ty for sharing!

  • nice pics

  • Pictures are to saturated at all. There are just few of them that are really on medium photographing level.

  • another amazing tutorial. Thanks Gavin :)

  • your the man, greetings from Costa Rica !

  • Gavin you are the best

  • another great video Gavin, where exactly is this field?(wonder if there's any in the North-West of England ...I didn't know you were on flickr I just added you, hope that's OK

  • It's on the south coast just outside Brighton. You can see the field from miles away on the A27. It looks like it's being grown as a crop.

Thanks for adding me to your Flickr

  • Really great video

  • I just don't know what to say....really .... ur so cool =)

    nice job =)

  • Really nice work, Gavin! Love the editing style too, really warm, glowy. I'm curious to know how that lens captured the reds, seems like Canon lenses don't do well with reds. Mine are usually too saturated and hence detail gets lost... Care to comment? Also, which camera do you have again? Also nice shots with your daughter... initially I thought this would be a portrait video, it'd be great if you did one of those in that field.... Going to check your flickr now! :) Have a great day!

  • I use Camera Raw's Targeted Adjustment Tool to tweak just the reds. Look back at my older videos on how it's done.

I have various Canon bodies. In this video I'm using a Canon 400D with the battery grip.

  • Beautiful! :D

  • photo gavin, you are the coolest guy ever:P, i would be please if you could add me at flickr:D my flickr name: canonchriss

  • 2:14 my favorite!

  • mine too :D

  • where was this?

  • In Sussex (UK) a few miles from Rottingdean near Brighton.

  • Oh spooky! Kind of.....XD

This really reminded me of quite a few years ago when I found a feild of poppies in Lyminster near Littlehampton! Small world...kind of!

  • Hi Gavin,

    Chaz from Tiverton here.

Nice video But may I ask about the colours as most of the stills look dark and have a very Yellow feel to them apart from the ones with the sky in the back, on my calibrated monitor

I have been trying to find a field like this in Devon No luck

  • Hi Chaz, no your monitors not deceiving you, I perfered the warmer tones so changed the white balance to "cloudy" warmed the colours up in Camera RAW.

  • wow.. great field..

  • grt shots.....

  • Ecellent shots...what a beautiful landscape...do you have a Flickr page ????

  • Yes, I've added a link to my Flickr page at the end of the description. You'll find many of the photos from this shoot on my flickr photostream.

  • I realy love your videos, you have such a nice voice and also music isn't distracting at all.

  • Excelente Video, e a paisagem é maravilhosa

  • nice tutorial.....thnxs for all of your videosss x
