The attention to detail with the scales is just magnificent. I feel like I have a zillion questions, but I bet most of them are already answered elsewhere in the comments...
Thank you for the nice comment! I appreciate it very much. I'm happy to answer questions. You can find a lot of information about my techniques on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested. You can follow the links in the video description.
Thank you for the nice comment. They really aren't seamless. I have seems too. It helps if you tear the cloth instead of cut with scissors. The frayed edge holds down with less of a seam. If your cloth is not real old though it can be hard to tear. Start it with the scissors, then tear.
I just use all-purpose paint, like they use for painting the house. It's usually a latex based paint with some acrylic in it. Any water-based paint will do.
Lately I get most of my eyes from taxidermists online. If you google "glass eyes taxidermist" you will find them all. I like Van Dyke's a lot. Let me know if you want a specific address. Can't put that in a comment on Youtube.
Hi there. I don't know where you live, but usually you can find some sort of newsprint. Perhaps ask friends and neighbors if they have any? Check coffee houses. They usually buy papers for their patrons and then just throw them out. Have them save some for you.
Hello there. I make the scales by dipping a square piece of cloth into white glue. Then I fold in the corners to make a triangle and then lay them on like bricks, staggering them as I go. I have more information on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) as well as my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you interested in my techniques.
Hello again. I put a "skin" of cloth dipped in white glue on my projects. It allows for more detail than just paper and makes the pieces very strong and durable. I've dubbed the process, "cloth mache".
This is gorgeous.. I'm still halfway through my first monster following the directions in you book. I promise that I will paint my jaws first...
Oh, and I ended up making a random fun project with on of the extra paper mache balls I "had lying around the house" on your advice. I hope to one day tackle the wall hanging "wall trophy"!
Thank-you, I think your book and work is wonderful.
I'm very happy to hear you are on your way with the project and am glad that you like the book. Good luck with the rest. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to help.

Thanks for creating these videos!
Man I love your work but do you think you could make a tutorial on the baby dragon I just started paper mâché and I think he is the perfect start thanks
Hi Dan - I've made two dragon masks so far using your technique - starting with pre-made mask blanks and doing wire and clothmache from there. Blackwashing is unbelievably amazing! But the masks are really heavy. I'm trying to fiddle with it (lighter fabric, etc) - but was wondering if you had any thoughts. Thanks for the art - I like your way of doing it - and I think it makes for happier dragons - masks or otherwise. - Nine
Hi there. I'm not really sure what's making the masks heavy. I don't know if you are paper macheing any part of it. You could skip that part and just do the cloth I think. Sorry, I'm not really a mask maker. So I don't have great advice beyond this. I hope you find a variation that works.
@DanMonsterMan - Thanks for the quick response! I've been taking a pre-made paper mache mask base, putting horns and fins in with wire and masking tape, and doing the cloth mache over them. No worries though - everything is still asymmetrical :) I shall continue tinkering - and happily watching this latest dragon - and the baby in the egg! Sweet! Thanks again! - Nine
Hey Dan. My kids projects are coming along nicely. However I'm having a little issue with the cloth mache. Do you have a recipe for the glue? I'm having a hard time getting my cloth to stick. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch. You are the man!
Hi there Bob. I use the white glue full strength. I don't water it down at all. The cloth does matter. You want a bed sheet that is fairly old. If it's too new it can be kind of stiff. The older the sheet the more the cloth will stay where it's put. I get mine at thrift stores. The cheapest sheets (cotton) are the best. It also helps to tear the sheet into strips rather than cutting. Of course you will have to cut some, but best to tear as much as possible.
Oh, Dan! I saw your web-site, I admire your masterpieces! Tina Dico sings nice, but heavy metal I like more:) At the moment I finished reading the "Trilogy of Desires" by Dreiser, thinking over...a little bit sad, most of all I liked the philosophy in India. Have You read this? Sorry if I bother You, I will stop now! :)
Oh, his belly is so sweet. Nice claws and tail, also scales! The dragon's colour is great, what marvellous eyes! I love this dragon! Has it a name? Oh....I see the little one! Cool idea!!! Thank You so much for great video! I like YOU!
I'm glad you checked this one out. Thank you for the kind words. I'm very flattered. I'll always make the art. But people like you who take the time to write inspire me to make more videos.
@DanMonsterMan, I subscribed your channel, oh, Dan, YOU made my day! Now I am trying to pack a present for my cousin using English newspapers and gouache paint, You inspired me! Also I am listening Dio 'Killing the Dragon' right now. (your Dragons are inconceivable!!!) What music did You listen today?
Hello again Marina. Thank you for subscribing to my channel. Even though I make lots of different things, dragons are my favorite. This morning I was listening to an artist named Tina Dico. She is my favorite singer songwriter.
I'm a dragon maker myself. Just finished a paper mache dragon puppet to carry around with me during a fantasy festival this summer. You can find a video of it on my channel. Keep up the good paper mache work!
Thank you for the nice comment! And congratulations on making Screamers with your kids. What a wonderful father (I assumed since you had "Bob" in your login)! No kidding. Great of you to make an artistic mess with your children. If you are ever interested, I love to post photos of other paper mache artist's work on my site. Just send photos (and any captions you'd like ) to dan at gourmetpapermache (dot com).
Wow. Your work is absolutely stunning. I love that the focus of your work is on dragons and other mythical creatures. Your papier mache sculptures are really incredible and inspirational. Thanks for putting your art out there for the world to see and keep up the amazing work!
I really appreciate you taking the time to write. Thank you so much for the very kind words. I'm glad that you like the work. I try to do other things, but I always get drawn back to dragons. They are my favorite thing to make. Better than a paper mache pig I think (although I've made a few of those in my day).
Hola.

I only remember you mentioning this once, and I replied that it was a good idea. But I can't guarantee what I'll make at any given time. I have lots of ideas. Thanks for this one.
Hi there. Nice to hear from you. I'm glad you like this one. This took a month and a half. But that's a couple hours a day along with some drying time. It's a pretty labor intensive process. But fun. I enjoy doing it.
Take care. Thank you for the nice comment once again.
Love love your artwork!!! I work with papier mâché but you take it to a totally different level. I also love this medium you can create anything there is no limit.
Hello there. Nice to meet another paper mache artist. I'm especially honored that you like the work. I agree, it's a great medium. Makes you wonder why everyone isn't doing it. Good luck on your work. I'd love to see it.
hey, it's me again. You might remember me from commenting on a bunch of your other videos. First of all, i want to say that this is amazing! i love this one! I would also like to ask if you sell these. if not, you should. I would buy them all!
Hi there. Of course I remember your comments. Nice to hear from you again. I'm glad you enjoyed this video. I do sell my projects eventually. But that's not really why I make them. I just enjoy doing the art. Thanks for your nice remarks. I really appreciate them.
Dan.... this brought tears to my eyes... your taking this Paper Mache to a whole new level. This is got to be my favorite! Just amazing...
I want to one day do something like this as a tribute to you. I don't know how well I'll do, but I have to try. I can go on and on about the perks using materials like this. But the greatest must be the freedom to do something in ANY size. OMG, this is AMAZING!
Nice to hear from you. Thank you for the wonderful comment! I can't believe how many videos you've produced. You are amazing. I'm glad to see how much success you are having. There are advantages and disadvantages to any medium. You have definitely mastered yours.
Really Great video and Dragon ,full of charater ,love the coloring!!. im working on my third dragon as a father day gift and i was wondering what brand of masking tape do you use? ,becuase the one im useing is weak.(its looks like an unwrapingn chicken mummy) please and thankyou
Congrats on your dragons! That's great! I actually use the "contractor's" bundles of masking tape they sell at Home Depot. It works very well. Just don't use the blue kind (that they use for painting). It doesn't have enough stick. 3M is a good brand if you don't want to buy the packs.
I don't know exactly how many hours it took. I always try to count, but then lose track. I worked on this project and another one over a two month period. But that's a couple hours a day for most days. There is drying time to consider as well. They are pretty labor intensive. But I think most art is. Thank you for watching.
You post so seldom, but when you do you never disappoint. You are one of the few users who I get excited when you post and always enjoy your art. Great Job
Thank you for the very nice comment. I don't post often because it takes a long time to build a piece and then longer to edit the video. Thank you for being so patient. It's always nice to hear from you.
You are too nice! Thank you! I think this is my favorite dragon too. Of course I always think that the project I just finished is my best. It will be my favorite until the next one. I should try to do something non-dragon. Andi probably will. But I always get pulled back to dragons. I just like them. They remind me of my cats I think.
Take care
Dan
PS. And yes, this one was a lot of effort. Many hours went into it. I'm glad you can see that.
Hi there. For the egg, I just crumpled paper and then put on a coat of "paper clay", a combination of toilet paper, white glue, flour, and joint compound. There are several recipes on the web. Then I just pulled out the wad of paper. Some did stay stuck inside. I just painted over that. It dries hard as rock. I used a belt sander to make it smooth. I show some of the details on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested.
I kept track on my blog. It took a couple of months. But during part of the time I was working on another project as well. It was pretty time consuming. I'd say a month and a half working a couple hours each day.
it looks more lik a forest dragon than a sea dragon but still likeing

But the masks are really heavy. I'm trying to fiddle with it (lighter fabric, etc) - but was wondering if you had any thoughts. Thanks for the art - I like your way of doing it - and I think it makes for happier dragons - masks or otherwise. - Nine

@knotofnine

SkaryBob2099 7 months ago
@SkaryBob2099

Best regards!

Hello Dan, love you work!
I'm a dragon maker myself. Just finished a paper mache dragon puppet to carry around with me during a fantasy festival this summer. You can find a video of it on my channel. Keep up the good paper mache work!

Great of you to make an artistic mess with your children. If you are ever interested, I love to post photos of other paper mache artist's work on my site. Just send photos (and any captions you'd like ) to dan at gourmetpapermache (dot com).

They are my favorite thing to make. Better than a paper mache pig I think (although I've made a few of those in my day).

Hola.
Buena suerte. Gracias por su interés.

Hi there,
Congrats on your dragons! That's great! I actually use the "contractor's" bundles of masking tape they sell at Home Depot. It works very well. Just don't use the blue kind (that they use for painting). It doesn't have enough stick. 3M is a good brand if you don't want to buy the packs.
Good luck!

Hi there,
I don't know exactly how many hours it took. I always try to count, but then lose track. I worked on this project and another one over a two month period. But that's a couple hours a day for most days. There is drying time to consider as well. They are pretty labor intensive. But I think most art is. Thank you for watching.

Dan
PS. And yes, this one was a lot of effort. Many hours went into it. I'm glad you can see that.

Hi Dan. I love your artwork! I was wondering if you use any sculpting tools to make your teeth/claws for your dragons. Thanks!
twilightsauce 8 months ago

Hi there,
I don't use any sculpting tools. Just my fingers. It's easy to just roll that polymer clay between the fingers to make nice teeth and claws.

What a cute touch with the baby dragon. How did you do the egg?
I am guessing it's plaster?! But how did you get the paper off without it sticking to it?
pinkarizonacat 8 months ago
@pinkarizonacat
Thank you!
