This is amazing! Such passion! Such untamed cry of emotions! Such a powerful interpretation that makes breath poor and speech unable! This is an eclectic mix of human nature.
And a great video too! I love the clips. Thank you so much for uploading this.
Her interpretations are always so RAW, EXCITING, and FRESH with an inexplicable MAGNETISM, CHARM and SPONTANEITY. I'm not surprised that both Stravinsky and Walton loved her interpretations of their concertos. She is really a wonder.
@twofinedays hey can you post those videos that you've mentioned??? like the Bruch, Brahms double and Mendelssohn????? btw, do you have any contacts with Kyung-wha Chung?????. You are like the TOP contributor of her videos..
@vlhere all thoes peformances I used as footage for this video exist only as parts of a BBC docu on Ms Chung 'East plays West'. Furthermore I do not own the video myself but only allowed to take bits for making of this video here.... and do I have contact with Ms Chung? I'd love to but better not; she'd kill me if she knew I have put all these videos of her :)
Maybe... It is told that Stravinsky commented on her playing his concerto that he hadn't realised how beautiful his concerto was till he listened to Ms Chung's interpretation.
then it is a pity for Stravinsky didn't live long enough, there are some great violinists played his concerto fantastically. but I still love Ms.Chung, because her other concertos are basically all unbelievable
I'm not Korean and I do not know if she could or did speak any English in the 1970's but it looks like her lips are saying, " ..want some" as she lifts her noodles(ja jang myun?) up to the camera person with a big smile. haha. Polite.
Ms Chung went to the States at the age of 13 and got a full scholarship offer from the Juliard school... and spent most of her life there and in Europe ever since... which means she of course can speak English! That particular part from the video is from BBC document on her, and, for their sake, she speaks in English even among her brothers and sisters (well, all of them anyway studied in the Staes together).
... and if it's any of interest, the noodle you see in the video is not 'ja jang myun' (knowing that name, you at least must have some contact to Korean culture); ja jang myun is black bean sauce based, so it should be dark brown to be one. The noodle in question is 'ramyun', an instant noodle, and not even Korean one but, I assume, Japanese... Ms Chung's sister specially brought it for her from the States to Europe where Ms Chung was mostly working in by the time.
I am very familiar with what Ja-jang myun is yes and have had it 100 times. I just thought that she had not yet added/poured the dark sauce on top of the noodles on her plate. I thought she had just grabbed the noodles with the chopsticks to show them to the camera..then it seems saying the words, "want some?" to the camera person. Geez why do you know that her sister specially bought noodles for her back in the 70's? Sounds a little obsessive that you know such information, don't you think..?
ha ha, I simply know it because I watched the whole documentary; there's a scene where they prepare this meal together before the table shot. And you're right, she's saying 'wnat some?' to the cameraman or woman.
It must have been fairly difficult at that time, in the 70's, to find any Korean food and grocery in Europe not to mention any Asian grocery; and I imagine this simple noodle soup must have been something special for her, away from home and family for a long time.
Ha Ha! Well, the 'woman' next to her is not a woman but a man and Ms Chung's brother Myung-Whun Chung, the conductor. The clip's from a documentary made in the 70's, and at that time keeping hair long was trendy among men, as you understand.
The source of most of video clips are from a documentary called 'The East plays West' produced and broadcasted by BBC in 1977, which focused on young Ms Chung's then recent and unique success as an Asian artist playing Western claasical.
Kyung Wha Chung is great <3

After Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, how refreshing to hear violin music by Stravinsky. This Stravinskian Bach and his orchestral writing is great.
