I've always LOVED this episode. In this scene alone it's just things like editing, a dutch angle shot, that weird back movement by the traveler does, and the compelling music that moves the scene forward that makes it so powerful.
Sometimes the LESS technology you have the more honest the approach and less bells and whistles to hide behind.
Regenmacher175 - I don't claim to have the answers and would never be so foolish as to claim evidence as to God's existence. A strong element of faith required. Science does a fair job of explaining the physical world, but it falls well short of explaining the metaphysical world. If YOU choose to believe only physical things are real, so be it. I find it easier to believe a transcendant being created the world than that we all arose abiogenetically from slime. No God? How liberating, eh?
@BigMacEater343 - I find that nearly all who scoff at faith and Christianity in particular will - if you engage them long enough - end up admitting their objections to divine transcendence lies in a desire to have license to do as they please without fear of consequences. Most of them I wouldn't even dignify with the term "agnostic," they are simply self-centered rebels against any established order. It's easy to become annoyed with overly religious people, I understand.
People who grew up in the 90s or later would laugh at the horned, goateed image of Satan portrayed in this classic episode, and don't have much fear of Satan in general. Many don't believe in Satan because the don't believe in God. My wife and I were in a theatre watching "Drag me to Hell" a few years ago, and scenes that I thought were scary were eliciting laughs from the rest of the audience. I think our culture is cranking out people who are too "sophisticated" for their own good. . .
@65kowalski no it's because people are tired of hearing about a book that supposedly was written under guidance of someone we cannot perceive and at a time where no scientific ways to determine the laws of Nature were available. let me ask you this: if God created us, who created God? it's like the person inside the box. it goes on ad infinitum. therefore, the Creator is only our creator (if you choose to believe) but in the end you don't KNOW and will never be able to.
I understand that it's a reference, but wouldn't it be most productive to his aims to convince the world that he's God? As a metaphor, that formulation works best, seeing as how the concept of God has exerted so much more influence on the masses (even while there's so little cause to entertain it), and how, in epistemic terms, if you've assumed the existence of the Devil, there's no means of determining whether it's really him or not you're serving. More accurate, and more sinister.
i always loved this seen. I always thought he looked like such a badass through the transitions, and that music!! seems i wasn't the only one. 2 thumbs up!!
I know that the Devil looks horribly cheesy here but it did it's job of being actually a little chilling for me at least, to me it was just creepy to empathize with David for being duped into screwing up the world.
The devil in this episode looks more like a Halloween costume, but still entertaining, in a cheezy sort of way. As a kid, I loved the Twilight Zone. I still enjoy watching some of the reruns.
'You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long.' Ask Brother Jerome. Ask David Ellington. They know, and they'll go on knowing to the end of their days and beyond...in the Twilight Zone.
Just caught this episode on the SyFy channel's Twilight Zone marathon...I don't think many people appreciate the quality of the writing or the profound and socially relevant storylines.
Just watched this earlier today during the Twilight Zone marathon

When has Satan ever looked so good? ... Or maybe it was just the men back then. Men knew how to be men, not boys.
Either way, you have to love the classics <3

How sad, that its easier to deny god than to believe in him. I feel bad for all unbelievers.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

He let the Devil loose and now he's roaming around the world riding elevators with people.

@tardwhisperer because he was looked behind the staff of truth. It's the only thing that can hold him. In this episode anyway.

The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape. But when he can get away with it, he prefers to look funny.
(Seriously, though, this is a good scene in a good TZ episode.)
