exactly how I was taught to smash mission control, new york, chill dog, to step over to half guard prevents every single attack. theirs flaws in every guard, but if rubber guard fails theirs no back up. they play lockdown half guard, and you can't attack from their, you need to play a deep half to attack for sweeps etc.
If you are in the riverisde area check out the grand opening of 10th planet jiu jitsu riverside at their new location on June 5th, 2010. Also be sure to check out the Eddie Bravo seminar at the same location... Seminar date is June 9th, 2010.
Eddie is the inventor of the Rubber Guard system and Sean Bollinger(resident black belt) learned the system and added a bit of his own style and moves to that system.
My hat's off to those guys. The Revolution will not be televised!
@riccosantana9 - For real Ricco! Is this this Ricco that comes out to Riverside from time to time? If so, what up, what up!
Anyhow, Ricco Santana... yes we are the evangelists of the system in a lot of ways. It's hard to tell 'em about it, but once they experience it, they can kinda see where we're goin' with it.
Yeah if someone manages to pass my leg i usually say fuck the Carni and go to Lockdown and try to whip up as fast as possible. But hey, thats just my opinion.
If someone is proficient enough at the 10th planet system if you push their knee down and try to pass they can just pull off carni. Hell there is no leg to push down while in crackhead control or invisible collar. Also this guys lockdown wasn't the best from halfguard.
Right on man. That was the first tournament for me at 8 months. It may have been novice division or beginner. I forget. Made some rookie mistakes in that one and true, I was sloppy. I'm kind of better now... I think. :)
here's a tip. anytime someone throws a rubber guard on you, push the other knee down to pass his guard and stretch the shit out of him. he'll stop doing that shit real quick
not if he's flexible and he goes to double bagger control..... look that shit up.... you can't push my knee down cause i'm holding imy foot with my opposite hand...
dude, if my posture's up and my hands are low like they're supposed to be there is no way in hell youll get a rubber guard going. besides while your left leg is up for a rubber guard, ill just pull the right knee down to pass and get to side control. cross body arm bar and good night.
I didn't say anything about getting the rubber guard started I said that you won't push my leg down that i'm not holding cause I would use "DOUBLE BAGGER" control. I'm holding both feet... You can't push the leg down cause i'm holding my foot.... Besides why is posture exclusive to the rubber guard. posture kills EVERY guard and enables you to pass.... not just rubber guard....
sorry bro but im just not sold on the rubber guard. ive had guys come to my gym and try that shit and they almost get their groin ripped in two when they try to pull the rubber guard. until someone works the rubber guard successfully against me, i just wont be sold on it. and please dont use the word "double bagger", it just sounds gay.
yeah i'm not saying the rubber guard is for everyone. I go back and forth which is what you should do depending on your opponents style. Most ppl that use the rubber guard have never really been trained by a pro using it and don't have the flexibility to REALLY employ it. Grabbing your ankle is easy but being good at the RG takes alot more time. Good luck training man.
Very well put man! Rubber Gaurd is not the be all end all but it definitely adds a weapon to your arsenal. Gotta switch it up a bit to give the opponent multitple different looks.
thanks. ill be at grapplers quest in florida aug 8 and maybe someone could prove me wrong. doubt it. bjj is the key to a long life. dont train in it, live it.
thanks. i dont practice BJJ for competition, but my instructor wants me to test my skills against different schools and i really want to enter the ADCC. peace
Look up Denny Prokopos. Won the Gold in the advanced division almost exclusively using the rubber guard. Look up Eddie Bravo, Shinya Aoiki...etc etc. It's out there and has been working for years.
Thinking of going to my first tournament. Same weight dilemma, I should be cutting to 145 but at 155 I'm basically going to be up against bigger guys.
True man.. When is the tourney? Also, every tourney has different weight ranges so you'll want to check on that. Like Grapplers quest is like 140-149.9 (so you'd be able to get that quickly). Other tourneys are like 145 - 155, and so on. The weight ranges are fairly standard.
You can also come in heavy for your weight range, so that you will feel strong and energized, while the bigger guys give up some energy by cutting down. Also bigger guys are at a disadvantage when it comes to speed
In general, bigger guys are at a disadvantage when in comes to speed and cutting weight and losing energy. I see some big guys that are freaks, i.e. they are super speedy, and they are full of energy[weight cut doesn't phase them].
thats so badass,,,i want to go to a submission grappling competition cause MMA is illegal in PA (for some stupid reason),,,i'm training in judo right now
Hey bro...but they are probably going to make it legal because of the economy and such...if they do make it legal it will bring in huge crowds (including me) which will help out the economy apparently
its nit illegal... they made it legal last year or so but they havent yet set the rules so poeple cant have events yet. fuck the athletic commision either way, dragging their feet on this is just stupid.
Well this tourny had its weight classes at 5's, right? And Friday weigh-ins? Yeah, I cut from 163 for this. I dieted, no water cutting, but still I was probably 160 at least when we rolled. So yeah, there was that too. You still felt strong as shit; you would kill people at 145. I cut to 149 for Grappler's Quest last year and I looked like Shaquille O'Neil in the division.
True that. First time weighing in also and the trainers recommended for the first tourney just go as my walk-around weight. 148 weigh in the day before an that day was 151. Tuff lesson but well worth it. I learned what it meant to go 110% or tournament speed- way different then in the gym. Man, the second tourney I actually tried to cut and went from 154 to 147 in 3 days by basically eating nothing but powerbars and skimping on the water. Not good.
Right on man! Yeah you did good. I was like that guy was twice as big as me! Eddie and a bunch of your guys were yelling in the end "Dan Severens! Dan Severens!". I later found out why(rear choke he's famous for). I think next time I'm going to try to go to 145's. BTW, at my next tourney I took first for my division(No Limits). I hear ya on those mistakes I made, my trainer pointed some out, e.g. I should have not turned to my back but instead, underhooked your arm. Take care man, Rick

Carni only works if you get the zombie first. If they T-Rex real well and pass to half, you ought to go to lockdown
