I've had my '04 950 from new. 93,000kms old now. Done a couple of fuel pumps (Mitsubishi units) and 2 water pump seals. Some of my mates have GS's, the Kato is far more reliable electrically and mechanically and shits on them on and off road. Just the facts dudes.
Well, I got a replacement engine on my 800GS last januari (wear on both pistons and cylinders after only 850km as a demo bike!) and in summer the new enigine started loosing oil. So much about BMW quality.
I am testing KTMs 990Adv now, hopefully this one will last longer!
@rockyroeba Sounds very good to hear that KTM is reliable! Iceland on the 990 Adv is a dream (I have been there five times before, three times by bicycle) but hate the thought of spending three days oneway on a shaking boat! This year I will most likely travel to eastern Europe and later Norway / norther Sweden. Good to know that the KTM will last!
"i can say this bike is by far much better than the Ktm and it will last much longer."
Quite the absurd statement. On what basis do you make such statements? I have ridden both, and own one of them. Suspension is nothing close to the KTM, power is down (although the bike is lighter), and there is less technology on the KTM to give grief. On the other hand, the BMW has better mileage, and a better warranty... not seeing why it is better though...
Rode both, own the KTM. Would not trade it for any F800GS, nor any other bike for that matter. F800GS is a good bike, but it does not equal the KTM imo... quite a distant second.
I have an Adventure 990, Was deciding between the GS800 and the KTM.. I took both for test rides. Both can do the job, but the KTM just looks more money than the BMW. No lose wires visible here and there, no plastic break-oil container, no fuss. Very clean design that I could take on a world tour without preparation. I wouldnt do that with the BMW. One thing I have to say though.. The KTM uses as much petrol as my car. About 7liters per 100Km, Think it is a little too much, but lots of fun.
Yep, I'm with you, amlloyd990, I own a ktm 990 adv and my mate has a bmw f800gs so I've ridden both extensively. The beemer is a great bike with a few small limitations, very reliable (once the recall items have been sorted) and great on road and off - slightly more on road than off. My Kato is a great bike with a few less limitations, very reliable and brilliant BOTH on road and off - slightly more off road than on. If I'd never ridden a ktm I'd be happy with the bmw BUT I have, so I'm not.
The one thing that shits me a little about my Kato is that it takes me nearly two hours to do an oil change! But JEEZ it makes up for it in the fun factor! ;-) Beemer has more things that shit me, but still a good bike...... the Kato's just better, that's all. ;-)
Mate, the beemer gets slightly better fuel economy than the ktm, but there's NO WAY it's half. I ride a ktm with my mate on his 800gs, mix of off road and on and similar riding styles, and I get about 18 -19 km per litre and he gets about 20 km per litre. Either your calculator is busted or you're riding conservatively and comparing with a ktm that's being flogged hard on the dirt (because it can be!) ;-)
we started with full tanks and we were riding together, same speed and riding style. Every time we refill the tanks my buddy had to buy twice as much full as me. Example if I filled back up with 2 gallons his bike took 4 gallons to fill back up. I am not trying to argue which bike is better. I think that it'a matter of personal preference. Both of these bike are awesome.
Does your mate's ktm have aftermarket pipes? Because I've heard of a bloke with Akro's on his 990 who got horrible fuel economy due to incorrect fuel mapping for the pipes. Just a thought, 'cause it really shouldn't be double.

The Bmw fuel tank is smaller, right?
mauricera 2 years ago
Yes, the BMW tank is smaller.(4.2 gallons) I can do about 200 miles on a tank of gas.
brnonrb 2 years ago
Cool, what kind of speed were you doing....does the gs handle as good as the KTM?
locopazzo 2 years ago
Anywhere between 40-60mph, I think that the F800GS is as good as the KTM and my fuel consumption is about half of the KTM.

Yes he does, you are right he didn't remap the engine.

I think that we did probably about 250 miles total that day with 100 miles on gravel/dirt roads.
