  • hes using consecutive picking when ascending...

  • FFFUCKKK the seventh nigga!!!

  • Alright, Rusty, I think it's about time you change your name to "all warmed up"

  • ... FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU >:O

  • Rusty = \m/. The people arguing below my comment however.... Arguing on YouTube is like the special olympics, whether you win or you lose, your still retarded!!

  • HOLEY TITS! THAT WAS AMAZING!

  • this is why so many people can't use and don't know how the modes function because people who think they know them start to teach and explain them in a wrong way. There is no Lydian position,Dorian position or any other modal position!

It's a matter of what you take for a root and not on where are your hands on the neck.If you want to really understand the modes get the Frank Gambale -Modes no more mystery

  • When does the Buz Mcgrath dvd come out, or has it already? This is a really good dvd by the way I picked it up at GC about a month ago. Rockhouse is awesome!

  • Rusty, what type/guage strings & picks do you mostly use?

  • i wish i had that guitar as a 6 string :/ not much of a 7 string player

  • Rusty has a real gift for teaching, explains everything very clearly and in a way you can understand!

Btw, are there any videos of Arpeggio Madness that are gonna be uploaded soon??? :-)

  • his left hand technique is so great.

  • dam hes fast

  • realy grate stuff simple and it sounds bigger then it is very cool, thank you

  • 2:21 PROOF THAT RUSTEY IS INFACT, HUMAN!

    lol

  • @dimeowns100 maybe that means, we all could learn to play like him.........maybe

  • Why is everyone crying about his 7 string? It's not that hard to look at. Plus if you can't play A Dorian off the top of your head you might want to buy practically any guitar instructional book. He is just giving you different ways to visualize the patterns and apply them.

  • who is the scale of the rusty guitar? he is know for doing some serius left hand streches or 4 NPS shapes

  • everytime the backing track starts and he begins to play the camera men must be like...." O_O"

  • Is Gus G ever planning on making one of these? That would be sick!

  • @Metalslayer17 Im Pretty sure Gus G just did one of these and it features Ozzy in it. I reckon that would be a sick DVD

  • lazy bastard... bad musician...

  • I have Level One of this DVD, and I can't praise it enough! Rusty effectivley helps you memorize the entire fretboard in Gmajor without you realizing it because of his modal approach. I now apply his method to memorizing other keys and scales such as the harmonic minor.

My ONLY complaint is that his guitar is tuned down half a step, which can be confusing at first when you're trying to play along. The 7th string is easy to ignore though. I highly recommend this DVD- thanks Rock House!

  • fuck he's really good at teaching

  • i think this six note concept is amazing for fretboard visualisation, but i guess its not really good for "learning" the modes, because even though you can use these shapes over chords that you would derive the equivalent mode from it does not get you to know the modes you play because for some of them the 7th is the interval that matters, and im kinda upset that mixolydian equals ionian in this case bcause im a fan of mixolydian, haha ;)

good concept nontheless, helped me, thumbs up!!!

  • Is it me or does it appear that he's sweep picking the scales up the neck as he goes faster instead of alternate picking? Or is that economy picking. Sweep picked arpeggios, I've seen. THIS is something new to me. Great lesson.

  • Wow this actually helped my playing a little bit. Not like ridiculously helped my playing but just that little bit that can really help get to the next level. I was kinda trying to figure out a way to do it and i was close to figuring it ut until i watched this vid so it kinda did that for me. lol.

  • Freakin' awesome man!!!

  • oops lol

  • I got the level 2 video of this from rock house on demand... How can I move the files to a different hard drive? The software you use doesn't allow me to even view where the files were saved and I can't figure out how I can put them on my iPhone like I did with level 1. If it's not possible to access them, move them around or put them on my phone then I'll be pretty pissed.

  • rusty vs loomis who would win

  • @Thuggybcobhc dang...hard question but loomis ftw!

  • @todor15

Rusty and Loomis are friends, to compare them

    is Stupid!!!

Especially when Rusty alternate picks 16 notes per second and Loomis alternate picks 13.5 nps... (Willjays list... as seen in Guitar World mag)

  • @Thuggybcobhc insted of battling each other, they would join forces to become a juggernaut cyborg that will destroy all other inferior genres of music leaving only the chosen ones behind

  • even great guitarists make mistakes, rusty cooley... u rock!!!!

  • I am picking up guitar playing again after 10 years or so...

I find these lessons very clear and informative, thanks for relaxed of explaining..

    its relative easy to follow.

    greetings from the netherlands!

  • He can play very well using legato, alternate picking, sweeps (absolutely the best sweeper, with jason becker...), vibrato, whammy bar... and mixing them with her own style, even with taste.

Few guitarrists can mix or dominates all these technics at this level. Of course he is not fusion-jazz player, so his music vocabulary and recurses are limited.

(A very interesting guitarrist is Guthrie Govan, you must see her videos)

    Its my opinion

  • @culillo1882

    Guthrie is male.

  • my band (((Furthest Krueger)))

    Please retrieve it with youtube.

  • Nice to know there is a bit of knowledge and theory behind the infamous "god of shredding". I don't have anything against him personally.

  • awesome lesson

  • Wow a lesson on how to make it look like your shreding faster and in a wider range than you really are lol.

im not ripping on rusty but i just think its funny for a guitar lesson. :p

  • Fuck my ass.

  • Thank you Rock House. Very useful info. Rusty Cooley is one of the best, and nicest people in the industry.

  • At about 1:45 i started bobin my head and just sayin' to myself "Not bad, not bad sounds easy enough... catchy.. mostly easy... until 1:53 ... what the fuck 0.o jesus christ thats amazing

  • I love guitar so much, but my biggest obstacle is learning the language. Like, I really have no idea what he's talking about, I just know that it sounds cool.

  • 5:54 to 6:02 you know what he really wanted to say is "make sure you take this slow and memorize before you attempt to be good like me" lol.

  • The 'key' to my missing lesson, easily done. Thank you and aloha! Time to rock out!

  • his shirt matches his guitar...sick!!!!

  • Is his guitar tuned down half a step?

  • it tuned to E flat

  • yup

  • Nice t-shirt man, where can I get one

  • On a 7-string, is the top string tuned to a B?

    Or what.

  • yeah it's tuned to a B

  • if he's playing his regular guitar, then it's in A#, but it's probably in B

  • Nah, what he calls G is sounding in F#, he's playing a half-step detuned Seven.

  • top string?

it adds a low B string

  • Correct.

  • i shit in my pants when i just hear Rustey Cooley.

    He plays just sick !!!

  • thats brilliant xD

i'm somehting of a shredder these days and thats what i've been looking for =D

a way to apply a solo to the whole neck...

    simply brilliant :)

  • Is that a seven string?

  • it is. about $3000

  • yes

  • this dudes an awesome guitarist man , that guitar kicks ass!

  • hehe i bought this dvd

  • Totally different stuff that he teaches, and whole different songs, I liked that, i think i'll get this DVD

  • im really thinking about buying this dvd

  • I LOVE THAT GUITAR!!!

  • his style, his guitar and his music...all just so awesome

  • now i need to convert the notes onto piano!

  • just so you know this is not a begginer lesson rusty's dvd is and intemediate and advanced lvl lesson, he uses the same solo pattern but the diff scales to show what you can do with scales and how soloing on diff scales even with the same pettern can sound diffrent.

  • Okay, so i watched this, and I was learning alot...til 1:50.

Like, okay, i just picked up a guitar, but hey, I'll get right on that solo of your, be back in 2 years. O_O

But then again, I kinda got pwnd.

  • what is the scales/modes that he goes over in this DVD?

  • sad thing is the speed hes playing isnt even cooley speed. its like half cooley speed lol

  • excellent DVD

i think more peopel need to get into stuff like this, the modes are EXTREMELY important, they can help you get out of just one position and get you all over the neck.

my only complaint is that the backing tracks are extremely short, around one minute. i wish you guys could release backing tracks that are closer to 5 minutes. that'd be awesome. i've got some backing tracks but they're either a moderate or slow speed. something fast would be awesome

  • I am very impressed with Rusty's music theory knowledge. He's very schooled when it comes to connecting notes together to make the various modes and scales. But, I'm still waiting to be impressed by his playing. He's fast and accurate for sure, but it all sounds so sterile.

  • I agree 100% man. Great teacher but his music isn't impressing me so far. :/

  • 1:54 curdled my milk man

  • man! why would you make an instructional dvd with a 7 string guitar?!

  • rusty only plays a 7 string becuase that is his model but the entire video is only with the bottom 6 strings which are exactly the same as they are on a 6 string. also you should know that there is a very big movement to 7 string by most of the new up and coming players

  • @therockhouse seven string would be nice, don't have to over use it but at certain times the contrast would be nice

  • @surferbrah84 That is what Rusty plays but the teaching is really all for 6 string. It is only one extra string so you don't have to be concerned about that. All our stuff is for 6 string players except for the new Buz McGrath DVD that is coming soon

  • @surferbrah84 a lot of people play 7 strings, pussy

  • @galatonim I didn't say there was anything wrong with 7 string guitars, genius. When I wrote this I didn't know that he didn't use the 7th string in the lessons. BTW I have this DVD and I recommend it to every guitar player, especially your lame ass. I bet you're still struggling to play smoke on the water on your fancy 7 string guitar.

  • @surferbrah84 check my channel bitch ^^

  • @surferbrah84 Duh

  • @surferbrah84 That's a stupid question. Bow before natural selection...

  • @surferbrah84 if you couldn't transpose a 7 string to a 6 string by merely changing the key, or octave, then you shouldn't be watching the video anyway

  • i never thought in a million years i'd ever hear rusty cooley say "oops"

  • he was probably faking it to make us all feel better.

  • @Huggietehr0x every1 makes mistakes :)

  • @Huggietehr0x i know right lol

  • as teacher he's actually better than I was expecting.

  • Well, he IS a professional teacher... =p

  • wtf....what a cool guitar!!

tnx for the lesson.i had learn

  • he's good but this was a pointless lesson. Really borint and no very creative

  • I understand what you are saying but I don't think you are taking into consideration that this is a sample lesson that comes from a program that has a group of about 30 lesssons!

  • Not a pointless lesson. Hes showing very useful patterns for legato shredding.

  • These are the basic of basic patterns.. and he does the same solo over a backing track everytime.. he can't improvise it? Like seriously

  • @Completreg Well, maybe you are a MASTER OF THE GUITAR.

However, although I can expand from doing a single position scale, I can't very much. This will help me greatly, and Cooly made everything very clear. I really couldn't ask for a better lesson.

  • @Completreg : I think you have to take into account that this is just one lesson from a DVD that is meant to help beginner/intermediates. It's called Fretboard Autopsy I - as in one of two. On top of that, listen to what he does in his little improv section around 4:15. He shows you that this "boring" lesson can be used in a very advanced creative way.

  • @Completreg ARE YOU SERIOUS?

This is a LESSON, not a song or a demonstration of creativity... OMG!

  • @Completreg How is it pointless? One of the most common issues with BEGINNERS (the target of this lesson) is that they get stuck in box shapes up and down the fretboard.. this is to help them practice sliding up and down more freely. It's not pointless, you just don't understand the context.

  • @Completreg I agree, really basic at the start...surprisingly so...

  • @mikathemage its an exercise not a lesson.

  • @Completreg And it's design to help move around the neck, it's hardly going to give you all the knowledge you're ever going to need!

  • Hi i'm Rusty Cooley you really can't play as well as me ever I don't care how hard you practice because i am in league with satan and he loves my fingers so much he gave me an extra twelve invisible ones lmao

  • Nao here iz the gmajor scale *plays slowly* nao repeet after me *supershred* ez, aint it? XD

  • we don't make bad videos any one having trouble following a rock house video just means that there skill is not there yet.

  • Rusty sucks

  • so do you

  • great work Rusty -- just what I needed.

Btw, where is the new Outworld CD?

  • anyone know why his neck p.u is slanted like that?

  • if by p.u you mean pick up then its slanted because if it was at a normall angle it would be in the way of the extra big cut out

  • Because the lower horn is so cut back that if it was in the regular position that a corner of it would come off the body

  • he kinda looks like chris angel

  • its not modal leaving out a 7th, the 7th implies the mode

    proof read your dvds please

  • 4:08 i can definately see how chris storey gets his style

  • Yes, how dare they be among the most talented players on the planet.

  • lol

  • i think rusty is the best teacher of all the rock house DVDs he just makes learning so much easier. when is the arpeggio madness going to come out? i heard it was pulled back a couple months

  • We're working on rescheduling him now. We just have so many artist coming in to the Rock House that it is getting filled up. Hopefully we will work on this before the end of the year.

  • learn some english then state your opinion.

  • why so hostile?

  • ugh i dont like when people tune down a half step like this and still call it g even though it f sharp....

  • evant95

thats a bad assumption on your part, it could be G flat also, depending on what you are tuning to

  • it is g flat, yet he calls it g

  • ...

That's common. There are a ton of instruments for which the music is written as if it were in the key of C, but sounds in another key.

  • Batio is speed king! no doughts batio fucking better than cooley at shredding deffo heys amazing at sweeping amazing at tapping good allrounder best shredder batio for me.

  • he can make the most simple scale sound awesome with his legato

  • Wow his playing and looks are so bad ass, i don't mean that in a gay way haha but you have to admit he looks pretty bad ass :P

  • rusty is amazing!! but he needs to learn how to put some melody into it. he is a really skilled guitarist though.

  • look at the discipline that man has! his fingers go to the EXACT same spot on each fret each time!

  • Guess who Mark Tremonti is influenced by and who taught it to him... Correct, RUSTY. Maybe there were less words because it's really Rusty's lesson.

  • Guess who Mark Termonti is influenced by and who taught it to him... Correct, RUSTY. Maybe there were less words becuase it's really Rusty's lesson. Look it up, it is well documented.

  • half step isnt that hard.. since even with a floyd u go out of tune when you dont play it for awhile.. and its about a half step.

  • Just gotta set it up right. Try adding an extra spring to your floyd if having that problem. 7 strings usually have 4 springs in the back.

  • fuck you rusty cooley...for being so fuckiin bad ass and making me jealous

  • Awesome axe !

  • if you want to tune it down....... tighten the springs in the back, and/or beef up the strings...........

or just take it to a guy that can set it up and tell him what tuning you want to be in...

  • in this episode im going to melt your face off again....

  • hahaha! Always blazin face melters! Rusty is the Speed King!!

  • excellent teacher! thanks rusty + uploader

  • im not a super big fan of rusty's music but he is a killer teacher and a very nice person. i am totally stoked for this man, he needs a place in a major band to put him at the forefront and just lay waste to people

  • been to high for me i dont really get the idea since im really beneath average in scale and chord theory lol

  • He is just amazing when it comes to guidance....He is also one hell of a shredder....hats off to Rusty \m/\ \m/

  • he's such good teacher...

  • he uses it in Eb

  • His guitar is awesome!!

  • It is really cool. I had the chance to check it out at the show and the detail on it is amazing. He was very involved in the design and mentioned that he worked very closely on the detail work until they had it just right!

  • lol 540

  • how do you apply a scale to a backing track and make it fit.

  • hes got a cool early paul gilbert tone going on, similar to the intense rock videos :/

  • what backing tracks he uses?

  • I love the fact that he can shred with no effort, but he has the true heart of a teacher. You can't help but learn from his teachings. I also like that he has an attitude that it's not about what he can do, but he wants his students to learn and progress and continue to become proficient.

  • yeah a bit like paul gilbert

  • Not only can he shred, he seems like a good teacher.

Personally I think he's 10times better than Malmsteem etc, maybe not technically.

But his riffs are actually awesome! I can listen to him, where as Malmsteem etc. I can only watch.

  • im sorry but rusty's technique is 1000000 times better than malmsteen.

  • I think he has one of the craziests technique ever and plays 1000 times better than the average famous metal guitar player but for some reason i i just don't like him

  • lol "whoops"

  • I wanna see the guitarist from Mors Principium Est get in a duel with Rusty.

  • I did this kind of thinking as an 11 yr old little boy, and i where so ashamed becuse i thougt it was cheating so i only did it at home XD

  • Damn Badass 7 string :D

  • watch that video where he explains his guitar, he had so much shit customized, the cutaway is deep so he can stretch mega far, and thats why the neck pickup is tilted, the cutaway is to big for it to be straight, and the tremolo is custom too! he has his guitar down to a science!!!

  • thats not fair he has 7 strings

  • rusty is such a great teacher! he definately knows what he's talking about and doing. i wish i had the experience and knowledge he has.

  • Yngwie fears Rusty. When Rusty plays, Yngwies Fenders explode!!!

  • almost the exact reply i was thinking

  • Haha, made me laugh.

  • lol, Yngwie has some awesome tone though, and some sick neoclassical-style playing. I don't think that the two are comparable. I'm sure Yngwie has more classical music theory knowledge, while Rusty knows more about guitar as a whole

  • I dont think yngwie knows any classical theory - he basicly just flies up and down the minor scale.

Also, he naver plays any accidentals, which is EXTREMLY common in classical music.

  • No rusty knows music theory listen to him talk

  • Gago!!! Palagpat ka imu ya!!!

  • I just bought this DVD a couple weeks ago from guitar center. it's really good. only $20

  • Holy crap, I didn't know GC had these 0_o

*runs to GC to get this*

  • aww i got mine for $30, ur lucky

  • i HATE his music, but i LOVE his teaching,

    its so helpfull

  • I cant find it even to order on the rockhouse page , could you give a link?
